Refresher courses organized in Commerce

1. Refresher Course on ‘Recent Trends in Banking & Financial Services’

I have successfully organized the ‘21-day Refresher Course in Commerce & Management’. The course was conducted for the period between October 20, 2009 and November 9, 2009 on the theme ‘Recent Trends in Banking and Financial Services’. The course was offered by the Academic Staff College, University of Madras. Shri. M.S. SUNDARA RAJAN, Chairman & Managing Director, India Bank inaugurated the refresher course. Hon’ Vice-Chancellor of Madras University Col. Dr. G. THIRUVASAGAM delivered the ‘presidential address’ and the Registrar i/c Dr. P. DURAISAMY delivered ‘special address’ on the occasion of the inauguration of the refresher course.

As many as 40 resource persons, invited from the banking and financial services industry, delivered lectures on as many as 50 topics relating to the theme of the course. Some of the popular topics that were discussed were mutual funds, hedge funds, financial supermarkets, money laundering and tax havens, knowledge management in banks, stock broking services, global financial crisis, credit rating services, role of SEBI, etc. Some of the prominent speakers include M R Venkatesh, Chartered Accountant, Siva Kumar, Chartered Accountant, Udayakumar, Cost Accountant, Rotarian Raja Seenivasan, and G Balasubramanian, Professor, IFMR (Institute for Financial Management & Research).

The course was attended by as many as 39 teachers from colleges and universities across India including States such as Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, etc. The course was wound up with the valedictory address by Dr. Bobby S Srinivasan, President of IFMR.

2. Refresher Course on ‘Emerging Trends in Corporate Business Practices’

The second Refresher Course successfully to be organized was the ‘First-Batch’ of ‘Refresher Course’ in ‘Business Studies’ on the theme ‘emerging trends in corporate business practices’ which commenced on 2 nd July 2010. The three-week program ended on 22 nd July 22, 2010. The program was sponsored by the UGC and was conducted by the ‘Academic Staff College (ASC) of the University of Madras.

The program was inaugurated by Col. Dr. G. THIRUVASAGAM, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras at 10.00 a.m. on July 2, 2010. The program was organized through a series of lectures by the industry top-notch, besides academicians. As many as 51 speakers spoke on as many as 55 topics pertaining to contemporary trends in corporate business practices. Some of the prominent speakers at the course were Padmashri. T N Manoharan, (Chartered Accountant), T S Krishnamurthy (Former Chief Election Commissioner of India), M R Venkatesh (Chartered Accountant, consultant and columnist), Dr. Babby Srinivasan (President of IFMR), Dr. M S Narasimham of IIM (B), Dr Thenmozhi of IIT, Chennai, Sridharan, Member, SIRC of ICSI, and Dr. Rekha Shetty (Industrial Consultant).

Some of the contemporary themes on which lectures were delivered were corporate culture, corporate ethics, corporate governance, corporate retailing, corporate risk management practices, corporate financial management practices, brands, knowledge management practices, e-marketing practices, role of capital markets, role of private equity, data mining, corporate frauds, IFRS, logistics management, etc. The 21-day Refresher Course got over with the valedictory address delivered by Shri. SrinivasaRaghavan, Chairman, ‘Sundaram Finance’ on July 22, 2010.

3. Refresher Course on ‘Contemporary Business Practices – A Case Study Approach’

The third Refresher Course was organized in ‘Commerce’ on the theme ‘Contemporary Business Practices – A Case Study Approach’. The course which commenced on 19 th July 2011 ended on 8 th August 2011. The program was sponsored by the UGC and was conducted by the ‘Academic Staff College (ASC) of the University of Madras.

The program was inaugurated by Padmashri. T N Manoharan, Chartered Accountant. Col. Dr. G. THIRUVASAGAM, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras, presided over the inaugural function. The program was organized through a series of lectures by the industry top-notch, besides academicians. As many as 55 speakers spoke on various topics pertaining to contemporary trends in corporate business practices with case study. Some of the prominent speakers at the course were Dr Suresh Gopalan from USA, Dr Shrikanth Raghavan also from USA, CA. Chinnasamy Ganesan, Dr Paul Jayakar, Gunasekaran, Muthu Vezhappan, CS Ravi.

Some of the contemporary themes on which lectures were delivered were limited liability partnership, corporate wealth management, information system auditing, OR techniques, financial modelling, role of SEBI, corporate governance, Earned Value Management, etc. The 21-day Refresher Course got over with the valedictory address delivered by CA Elias Sait, Chairman and Managing Director, Alsa Marine, on July August 8, 2011.

4. Orientation Program for the newly recruited Commerce Teachers

A four-week academic exercise ‘Orientation Program’ for the newly recruited Government College Teachers in Commerce was organized by me. The program commenced on 4 th May 2011 and was concluded on 2 nd June 2011. The program was organized under the auspices of the ‘Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education’, Government of Tamil Nadu and the UGC-Academic Staff College of the University of Madras.

As part of the program, series of lectures were organized throughout the period of the program. The lectures were mainly focused on areas such as communication skills, refresher course (core and allied subject-related), ICT, linkage between society and education, philosophy of education, personality development, etc.

Some of the important topics that were covered during the course of the training program include communication skills, personality development, curriculum development, research projects, NAAC/ IQAC, micro teaching, Internet marketing, national security, e-resources, etc. Some of the prominent resources who delivered lecture include Dr Swaminatha Pillai, Dr Gopalji Malviya, Dr K K Sharma, Dr. Ambuja, Dr Jayakumar, Dr S P Rajagopalan, Dr M R Srinivasan, Dr Senthil Adiban and others.

As part of the program, the performance of teacher-participants was assessed on the basis of test, seminar presentation, and assignment. Dr Victor Louis Anthuvan, Dean-Research, LIBA, distributed certificates to the participants on the last day of the program.

5. Refresher Course on ‘Emerging Trends in International Business’

The fourth Refresher Course was organized in ‘Commerce’ on the theme ‘Emerging Trends in International Business’. The course which commenced on 25 th July 2012 ended on 14 th August 2012. The program was sponsored by the UGC and was conducted by the ‘Academic Staff College (ASC) of the University of Madras.

The program was inaugurated by Sri. Srinivasaragavan, Managing Director, Sundaram Finance Ltd and President of the MCCI (Madras Chambers of Commerce and Industry). Col. Dr. G. THIRUVASAGAM, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras, presided over the inaugural function. The program was organized through a series of lectures by the industry top-notch, besides academicians. As many as 35 speakers spoke on various topics pertaining to emerging trend in international business. Some of the prominent speakers at the course were Dr Paul Jayakar of M/S Bramayya and Co, Mr. Gunasekaran of Ennore Port, Mr. Subramanian of Ashok Leyland, Mr. Datta of Hyundai, and others. 6. Refresher Course on ‘Corporate Business Practices - Global Perspective’

The fifth Refresher Course was organized in ‘Commerce & Management (Batch II)’ on the theme ‘Corporate Business Practices - Global Perspective’ The course which commenced on 23rd July 2014 ended on 12 th August 2014. The program was sponsored by the UGC and was conducted by the ‘Academic Staff College (ASC) of the University of Madras.

The program was inaugurated by the Honourable Vice-Chancellor, Prof R Thandavan and presided over the inaugural function. The program was organized through a series of lectures by the industry top-notch, besides academicians. As many as 43 speakers spoke on various topics pertaining to emerging trend in international business. Some of the prominent speakers at the course were Dr Paul Jayakar of M/S Bramayya and Co, Mr. Gunasekaran of Ennore Port, Mr. Subramanian of Ashok Leyland, Mr. Datta of Hyundai, and others.

Some of the contemporary themes on which lectures were delivered were financial modelling, corporate governance, contemporary weal management practices, GAAR, transfer pricing, etc. The 21-day Refresher Course got over with the valedictory address delivered by Mr Venkatachalam, General Secretary, AIBEO, on August 12, 2014.

7. Refresher Course on ‘E-Commerce as a gateway/great way to future Commerce’

The sixth Refresher Course was organized in ‘E-Commerce & Management (Batch III)’ on the theme ‘E-Commerce as a gateway/great way to future Commerce’ The course which commenced on 4th August 2015 ended on 24 th August 2015. The program was sponsored by the UGC and was conducted by the ‘Human Resource Development Centre’ of the University of Madras.

The program was inaugurated by Mr. SG Prabhakaran, President of the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI). The program was organized through a series of lectures by the captains of the Indian industry, besides academicians. As many as 39 speakers spoke on various topics pertaining to emerging trends in E-Commerce and Management. Some of the prominent speakers at the course were Dr Paul Jayakar of M/S Bramayya and Co, Mr. Gunasekaran of Ennore Port, Mr. Krishnan of Natesa Iyer & Co, Roopash Rao of BSR & Co, S Ganesh of EID Parry, Venkatachalam of AIBEA, Rob W Peck of Google Services and others. Some of the contemporary themes on which lectures were delivered were building e-commerce portals, business intelligence, cloud computing, logistics and supply chain management, taxation with reference to E-Commerce, e-trading in stocks and commodities, Google services, etc. The 21-day Refresher Course got over with the valedictory address delivered by Dr. David Jawahar, Registrar of the University of Madras on August 24, 2015.

8. Refresher Course on ‘Contemporary Trends in Global Commerce & Management’

The seventh Refresher Course was organized in ‘E-Commerce & Management (Batch IV)’ on the theme ‘Contemporary Trends in Global Commerce & Management’ The course which commenced on 3rd August 2016 ended on 23rd August 2016. The program was sponsored by the UGC and was conducted by the ‘UGC-Human Resource Development Centre’ of the University of Madras.

The program was inaugurated by CA Murali, President of Hindustan Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The program was organized through a series of lectures by the captains of the Indian industry, besides academicians. As many as 31 speakers spoke on various topics pertaining to contemporary trends in global commerce and management. Some of the prominent speakers at the course were Dr Paul Jayakar of M/S Bramayya, Gayathri Sriram, Chairman and MD of Ucal Auto Ltd, Mr. Krishnan of Natesa Iyer & Co, CA Ganesh of EID Parry, Venkatachalam of AIBEA, Mr. Nagappan, Datta from Hyundai Motor Company and others.

9. Refresher Course on ‘Conducting Trade & Commerce in globalized ear - Challenges and Opportunities’

The eighth Refresher Course was organized in ‘Commerce & Management (Batch III)’ on the theme Conducting Trade & Commerce in globalized ear - Challenges and Opportunities’. The course which commenced on 22nd August 2018 ended on 11th September 2-018. The program was sponsored by the UGC and was conducted by the ‘UGC-Human Resource Development Centre’ of the University of Madras.

The program was inaugurated by Dr Sunder Ramaswamy, Vice Chancellor of Krea University. The program was organized through a series of lectures by the CEOs of companies who have knowledge in various areas in Commerce and Management such as banking, finance, accounting, auditing, taxation, international trade etc. As many as 45 speakers spoke on various topics pertaining to contemporary trends in global commerce and management. Some of the prominent speakers at the course were Dr Paul Jayakar, Mr. Krishnan of Natesa Iyer & Co, Venkatachalam of AIBEA, Mr. Nagappan, Datta from Hyundai Motor Company, Dr Nataraj IPS, Mrs Latha Rajan, Mr Putran and others.

Some of the contemporary themes on which lectures were delivered were GST, Trade Wars, logistics and supply chain management, HR practices, corporate taxation, Brexit, capital markets, etc. The 21-day Refresher Course got over with the valedictory address delivered by Mr Suresh, CEO, of Indian Cements Capital Ltd on September 11, 2018.

International Conference organized

Inauguration and Book Release

I have organized a ‘Two-day International Conference’ in March 2010. The theme of the conference was ‘Global Financial System in the Post-crisis Era: Issues, Challenges and Opportunities’. The conference was sponsored by UGC. The conference was held on 16 th and 17 th March 2010. As many as 300 delegates from around the globe participated and presented papers in the conference. The conference was inaugurated on March 16 2010 by Honourable Dr. C. Rangarajan, Chairman, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India. Besides delivering the inaugural address, Dr. C. Rangarajan released the edited book entitled ‘Global Financial System in the Post-crisis Era: Challenges and Opportunities’. Honourable Vice-Chancellor of the University of Madras, Col. Dr. G. Thiruvasagam delivered the ‘Presidential Address’. Shri. M.S. Sundara Rajan, Chairman and Managing Director, Indian Bank delivered ‘Special Address’.

Technical Sessions

There were four technical sessions spread over the two days of the conference which were held as part of the conference. Eminent personalities in the field of banking and finance were called to chair the technical sessions. The first technical session on ‘Global Financial System and Financial Inclusion’ was held in the forenoon of 16 th March 2010 and was chaired by Dr. Asim Kumar Mukherjee, Professor of Commerce and Management, Allahabad University. The session was co-chaired by Shri. P.K. Vishwanathan of IFMR. As many as 24 papers were presented in the session. Sumptuous lunch was arranged and around 500 people had lunch at the Dr. Malcolm Adiseshiah Hall of the University of Madras.

The second technical session on ‘Global Financial Crisis and its Aftermath’ was held in the afternoon of 16 th March 2010 and was chaired by Dr. M.S. Narasimhan, Professor, IIM, Bangalore. The session was co-chaired by Dr. G. Balasubramanian, Professor at IFMR. A record number of seventy papers were presented in the technical session. At the end of the second technical session, a cultural program was organized by the students of the Department of Indian Music, University of Madras and it was followed by dinner.

The third technical session on ‘Global Financial System and Financial Innovation’ was held in the forenoon of 17th March 2010 and was chaired by Dr. M. Thenmozhi, Professor, Department of Studies, IIT Madras. The session was co-chaired by Padmashri. T.N. Manoharan, Chartered Accountant and former President of ICAI, New Delhi. As many as 45 papers were presented in the session.

The concluding technical session on ‘Global Financial System and Capital Flows’ was held in the afternoon of 17 th March 2010 and was chaired by Dr. P. Natarajan, Professor of Commerce, Pondicherry University. As many as 17 papers were presented in the session.

Valedictory and the award function

The valedictory and the award ceremony began at around 5.00 in the evening. Mr. Woodard, Scott, Economic and Political Advisor, Office of the Consulate General of the United States of America at Chennai, India was the chief guest and he delivered the valedictory address. Dr. P. Saravanan, Honourable Registrar, University of Madras delivered ‘Special Address’.

The ‘Best Paper Award’ was given away by Mr. Woodard, Scott, in the immediate presence of Dr. P. Saravanan, Honourable Registrar, University of Madras to Dr. Ponmudi, Associate Professor, Department of Commerce, Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai. Certificates of Merit, Certificates of Honour, Certificates of Excellence, Certificates of Participation and Certificates of Appreciation were given away by the chief guest. The conference was thus a huge success. The inaugural function of the conference was widely covered and reported both in electronic and print media such as the ‘The Hindu’ dated 17 th March 2010, ‘The Deccan Chronicle’, dated 17 th March 2010 and so on.

46. Workshop organized

A two-day workshop was organized by me at the Department of Commerce, University of Madras on January 19 and 20, 2011. The workshop was held on the theme ‘Convergence of Indian Accounting Standards (IAS) with the IFRS’. The workshop was organized in association with the Institute of Chartered Accounts of India (ICAI), New Delhi. The aim of the workshop was to create awareness about the impending convergence of the IAS with the IFRS and to provide a platform for the teaching faculty to learn about the new standards of accounting practice.

The workshop was inaugurated by Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras, Col. Dr. G. THIRUVASAGAM on January 19, 2011. He released a edited book entitled ‘Convergence of Indian Accounting Standards with the IFRS’. The first copy of the book was received by CA Santhanakrishnan, Vice-Chairman, Accounting Standards Board, ICAI. Eminent chartered Accountants from the industry delivered lectures on topics relating to IAS and IFRS. The topics include first-time adoption of IFRS, road-map to IFRS, Accounting for fixed assets, etc. Vjay Kapur, Director, Board of Studies, ICAI, delivered valedictory address and distributed certificates to the participants of the workshop on January 20, 2011.

47. Entrepreneurship Training Program for College Teachers

Entrepreneurship Training Program was organized for the teachers working in Colleges affiliated to the University of Madras. The Program was sponsored by the Department of Higher Education, Government of Tamil Nadu. The Program which was organized in eight batches was started on 2 nd January 2013 and ended on 22 nd February 2013. Each batch was for a duration of five days. Over 100 College Teachers participated in the Training Program. Participation certificates were given away to all the successful participants. Training was imparted on aspects pertaining to uncommon opportunities, entrepreneurial finance, motivation for entrepreneurs, qualities of an entrepreneur, preparation of market survey report, accounting for entrepreneurs, experiences of successful entrepreneurs, taxation for entrepreneurs, etc

48. National Conference on Entrepreneurship (March 20, 2013)

As Conference Chair, One-day National Conference on ‘Entrepreneurship in India – The Road Ahead’ was organized in the Department of Commerce in sponsorship with the Department of Higher Education, Government of Tamil Nadu, on March 20, 2013. The Conference was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Madras Dr. R. THANDAVAN. Edited book entitled ‘Entrepreneurship in India – The Road Ahead’ was released by the Vice-Chancellor on that day. Mr Shivaraman, President of the MCCI (Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry) and the Chairman and the Managing Director, Shriram EPC Ltd inaugurated the Conference and released the ‘Madras University Journal of Business and Finance’. Mr. Gary Jacobs, Consultant, California, USA delivered the key-note address and gave away the ‘Best Paper Award’.

The National Conference was organized in two technical sessions. The first technical session on ‘Issues and challenges of Entrepreneurship’ which was chaired by Prof. Banerjea, Department of Commerce, University of Calcutta. The second technical session on Contemporary Trend on Indian Entrepreneurship’ was chaired by Prof. Natarajan, Head, Department of Commerce, Pondicherry University.

The Valedictory function was held in the evening of the aforesaid day. Padmashri. CA T.N. Manoharan delivered valedictory address and distributed certificates to participants.

49. Expert Committee on Curriculum Development for Managerial Science

As Coordinator of the Expert Committee on Curriculum Development for Managerial Science, a meeting was organized on Monday, the 25 th March 2013. The meeting was convened as part of the greater initiative of the Department of Higher Education, Government of Tamil Nadu to introduce uniform curriculum for the all State Universities in Tamil Nadu in the discipline of ‘Managerial Science’ (commerce and Management).

As many 14 experts from various parts of the country were invited to participate and make a presentation at the meeting. Experts represented professors from Universities in Tamil Nadu and also from Universities from outside Tamil Nadu. Experts were also invited from affiliated Colleges.

Several new and innovative courses were suggested at the meeting. A detailed report on the proceedings of the meeting along with the details of syllabus and the curriculum was submitted to the ‘Curriculum Development Cell’ of the University of Madras for onward transmission to the Government of Tamil Nadu.

a. M. Com (International Business and Finance)

I have designed, developed and introduced an innovative PG program entitled ‘M. Com (International Business and Finance) at the Department of Commerce, University of Madras from the academic year 2010-2011 onwards. The two-year program is offered under CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) with 91 credits. The program has as many as 14 core papers, 7 electives and 3 soft skill papers. Besides, the program also contains an Internship at the end of their first year and a project work at the end of their second year of study.

b. M. Com (General)

I was responsible for updating (with industry-focus) curriculum and syllabi of the PG program entitled ‘M. Com (General) offered at the affiliating non-autonomous College of the University of Madras from the academic year 2013-2014 onwards. The two-year program is offered under CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) with 91 credits.

c. M. Com (Accounting & Finance)

I was responsible for updating (with industry-focus) curriculum and syllabi of the PG program entitled ‘M. Com (Accounting & Finance) offered at the affiliating non-autonomous College of the University of Madras from the academic year 2013-2014 onwards. The two-year program is offered under CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) with 91 credits.
