ROBERT COCIIBAN • • • WESTERN KENTUCKY STATE BowIiDlGrMD, Kentucky WESTERN KENTUCKY STATE COLLEGE Deep in south central Kentucky on a hilltop visible for miles, stands Western Kencucky State College, home of the Western Kentucky Hilltopper football team. The college is located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, a city of approximately 32,000 population which may justly be called one of the most beHutiful small cities in Am erica. It has been appropriately name" -he 'Park City' . College Heights is nationally recognized as one of the nation's most beautiful campuses. It embraces an area of some 70 acres on which twenty-eight college huildings are located, occupies an eminence overlooking the city of Bowling Green and commands one of the most beautiful panoramic views to be found. Founded in 1906 by Dr. H. H. Cherry, one of Kentucky's most famous educ ators, Western Kentucky State College as a co-educational college with an enrol lment of better than 3000 students has become one of Kentucky's foremost institu tions of higher education. A complete program offerin g courses in twenty-three different departments provides diversified educational opportunities. The Master of Arts, the Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Arts degrees are offered. Pre-professional work leading to entrance in professional and technical colleges for advanced study is also offered. Western Kentucky's faculty of 120 members has been trained in America's finest colleges and universities. Classrooms, laboratories, shops , farm areas and equipment are modern and sufficient to assure the student the highest type of instructional facilities. In addition to football, Western Kentucky has intercollegiate athletic teams in basketball, baseball, track, tennis and golf. A full schedule of intercollegiate contests is played in each of these sports . The college is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference and of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Last year Coach Denes led the Hilltoppers to a record of 5 wins and four loss- es. The modest, unassuming Denes holds a win - loss record in athletics which is fabulous. HIs overall record is 445 victories, 125 losses and 9 ties. In football his teams have won 153, lost 44, and tied B. In basketball the record reads 162 wins and 48 losses. In track his teams won 108 and lost 22 . As Western's baseball coach, Denes has a 22 win, 11 loss and 1 tie record. His highly successful coaching career began at Corbin, Ky., High School in 1929, following graduation from the University of Illinois. The veteran Denes is the only high school coach in Kentucky to ever win state championships in three sports. He coached his 19 36 Corbin basketball team to the state title. In 1951 he dir ected his Louisville Male High School football team to the state championship and Denes was named Kentucky's "Coach of the Year" for 1951. While at Male, Coach Denes' track teams won seven state crowns, five in a row. In 1939 the likable, story-telling Denes came to Western Kentucky as an assis tant coach. Coach Denes moved to Male in 1940 as an assistant coach. He handled the line on two state championship team s before he took over as head coach in 1949 to com pile one of the most brilliant coaching records in the history of athletics at the Lou isville school. A warm. friendly person, Coach Denes is a firm believer in strict discipline and hard work. His teams are always superbly conditioned. - 3 - HILLTOPPER COACHES (Cont.) TURNER ELROD Elrod played football, basketball and baseball at Western Kentucky from 1927 through 1930. He coached high school athletics in Kentucky following his gradua tion in 1931. Prior to joining the Hilltopper coaching staff at the opening of the 1949 season, Elrod was athletic director and -assistant football coach at Barrett high school. Henderson, KentUCky. He served in the United States Army from 1942 through 1946. Elrod also coaches the Hilltopper track team in the spring sports program. FRANK GRIFFIN Griffin played end for the Hilltoppers before World War II. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1941 through 1946. Upon being discharged, he joined the Hill topper staff as trainer. He moved up as an assistant coach in the spring of 1948, handling the line. Griffin also coaches the Hilltopper golf team which is a highly- rated contender for the Ohio Valley Conference championship each year. JIMMIE FEIX Feix, Little All-American quarterback at Western Kentucky in 1952, Joined the Hilltopper coaching staff as a full-time assistant in September, 1958. He was a student assistant for a year while completing work for the M. A. degree which he received in August, 1958. Feix, gained national recognition for his quarterbacking of Westen1 Kentucky's Refrigerator Bowl champions in 1952. He ranked among the top passers in the nat ion during his junior and senior years with the Hilltoppers. In June, 1953, he was graduated from Western Kentucky with the B. S. degree in physical education. He entered the U. S.
