    THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 22, No. 4 (2000) RONNIE LOTT Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2000 By Joe Horrigan If you were to choose one word to describe defensive back Ronnie Lott, it would have to be “passionate.” One of the hardest hitting players ever to take the field, Lott played every down with a fearless winner- take-all attitude. A throwback to another era, he often spoke of his admiration for past bone-jarring greats like Dick Butkus, Ray Nitschke, and Sam Huff, and his desire to achieve their level of play. A consensus All-America choice at the University of Southern California, Lott was the Trojans’ 1980 Most Valuable Player. He led the Pac 10 with eight interceptions his senior season and registered 250 tackles during his four-year collegiate career. As a result, the San Francisco 49ers made him their No. 1 choice – the eighth pick overall – in the 1981 National Football League draft. Lott, as advertised, was the complete package. He had speed, strength, and knowledge of the game that set him apart from most other defensive backs. And, as hoped, the 6-0, 203-pound defensive back went on to become a defensive mainstay on a 49ers’ team that dominated the National Football League in the 1980s. His 14 years of near-unparalleled play not only earned him the right to be compared to the likes of Butkus, Nitschke, and Huff, it also accorded him the privilege of joining them as a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. During his remarkable career with the 49ers (1981-1990), the Los Angeles Raiders (1991-1992), and the New York Jets (1993-1994), Lott earned 10 Pro Bowl invitations at three different positions – cornerback, strong safety, and free safety.

But the organization’s glorious past dates back almost 60 years and includes five world championships overall and some of the most innovative people and ideas the game has ever known. From George Preston Marshall to Jack Kent Cooke, from Vince Lombardi to Joe Gibbs, from Sammy Baugh to John Riggins, plus the NFL’s first fight song, marching band and radio network, the Redskins can be proud of an impressive professional football legacy. George Preston Marshall was awarded the inactive Boston franchise in July 1932. He originally named the team “Braves” because it used Braves Field, home of the National League baseball team. When the team moved to Fenway Park in July 1933, the name was changed to Redskins. A bizarre situation occurred in 1936, when the Redskins won the NFL Eastern division championship but Marshall, unhappy with the fan support in Boston,moved the championship game against Green Bay to the Polo Grounds in New York. Their home field advantage taken away by their owner, the Redskins lost. Not surprisingly, the Redskins moved to Washington, D.C., for the 1937 season. Games were played in Griffith Stadium with the opener on September 16, 1937, being played under flood lights. That year,Marshall created an official marching band and fight song, both firsts in the National Football League. That season also saw the debut of “Slinging Sammy” Baugh, a quarterback from Texas Christian who literally changed the offensive posture of pro football with his forward passing in his 16-season career.

He 9 was raised in Girard, Ohio, where he won 11 high school letters in 10 football, track and field, basketball and gymnastics; and 11 WHEREAS, he received 26 scholarship offers to play football. 12 He chose the University of Toledo, won letters all four years at 13 Toledo before the Giants drafted him in the fifth round. After 14 his pro football career, he worked in a Toledo brewery and ran a 15 federal training program; and 16 WHEREAS, the 1956 National Football League Final was a 17 memorable game in which the Giants wore white sneakers on Yankee 18 Stadium's frozen turf while the Chicago Bears skidded around on 19 cleats; and 20 WHEREAS, in 1996, at a 40th Anniversary Celebration of that 21 championship, Sam Huff, the Giants' Hall of Fame middle 22 linebacker, recalled Triplett's 17-yard run in the game. "He ran 23 a trap in the middle," Huff told the New York Times, "and with his 24 head down he went straight over an official and into the end zone 25 for our first touchdown."
