We know that graphic design is a manipulation of certain elements in order to communicate, specifically typography and image, but in order to be brought together, these elements must exist on the same plane–the surface. If, as semi- oticians have said, typography and images are signs in and of themselves, then the surface is the locus for the application of sign systems. Based on this, we arrive at a simple equation: surface + sign = a work of graphic design. As students and practitioners of this kind of “surface curation,” the way these elements are functioning currently should be of great interest to us. Can we say that they are operating in fundamentally different ways from the way they did under modern- ism? Even differently than under postmodernism? Per- haps the way the surface and sign are treated is what distinguishes these cultural epochs from one another. We are confronted with what Roland Barthes de- fined as a Text, a site of interacting and open signs, 6 NEW MODERNISM(S) and therefore, a site of reader interpretation and of SIGNIFIER + SIGNIFIED = SIGN semiotic play.1 This is of utmost importance, the treat- ment of the signs within a Text is how we interpret, Physical form of an Ideas represented Unit of meaning idea, e.g. -

History of Social Theory
Fall 2013 Sociology 101 Michael Burawoy HISTORY OF SOCIAL THEORY A course on the history of social theory can be presented with two different emphases -- as intellectual history or as theoretical tradition. In the first approach the classics are examined in relation to their political, social, economic and particularly their cultural context. In the second approach the classics are systematically compared to one another to show both similarities and differences but also to place them in some developmental sequence. In this course we shall primarily follow the second approach although it will still be essential to situate the ideas of any given writer in his or her historical milieu. It is the hypothesis of this course that within our field there are essentially three theoretical traditions: a marxist tradition, a sociological tradition and an emergent third tradition that transcends both Marxism and sociology. In this view sociology developed out of a critical dialogue with the writings of Marx and Engels and the Marxists that followed them, while this third tradition, often referred to as postmodernism, seeks to go beyond the optimistic accounts of both marxism and sociology. Accordingly, in the first semester we shall examine the Marxist tradition, beginning with Marx and Engels, passing rapidly through German Marxism (Kautsky, Bernstein, Luxemburg), stopping at Russian Marxism to study Lenin's treatise on the transition from capitalism to communism, moving on to Antonio Gramsci as the foremost "Western Marxist" and from there dealing with Third World Marxism as represented by Frantz Fanon. Next semester we will work through key representatives of the sociological tradition, Durkheim and Weber, followed by Foucault, our “postmodern” thinker, before ending with the feminism of Simone de Beauvoir, followed by those who have worked in that tradition in the United States – Catherine MacKinnon and Patricia Hill Collins. -

DICK HEBDIGE SUBCULTURE THE MEANING OF STYLE LONDON AND NEW YORK INTRODUCTION: SUBCULTURE AND STYLE I managed to get about twenty photographs, and with bits of chewed bread I pasted them on the back of the cardboard sheet of regulations that hangs on the wall. Some are pinned up with bits of brass wire which the foreman brings me and on which I have to string coloured glass beads. Using the same beads with which the prisoners next door make funeral wreaths, I have made star-shaped frames for the most purely criminal. In the evening, as you open your window to the street, I turn the back of the regulation sheet towards me. Smiles and sneers, alike inexorable, enter me by all the holes I offer. They watch over my little routines. (Genet, 1966a) N the opening pages of The Thief’s Journal, Jean Genet describes how a tube of vaseline, found in his Ipossession, is confiscated by the Spanish police during a raid. This ‘dirty, wretched object’, proclaiming his homosexuality to the world, becomes for Genet a kind of guarantee - ‘the sign of a secret grace which was soon to save me from contempt’. The discovery of the vaseline is greeted 2 SUBCULTURE: THE MEANING OF STYLE with laughter in the record-office of the station, and the police ‘smelling of garlic, sweat and oil, but . strong in their moral assurance’ subject Genet to a tirade of hostile innuendo. The author joins in the laughter too (‘though painfully’) but later, in his cell, ‘the image of the tube of vaseline never left me’. -
Gramsci's Marxism
Alastair GRAMSCI’S Davidson MARXISM The author, lecturer in politics at Monash University, con tinues his series on the great Italian Communist leader, Antonio Gratnsci. The article probes the particular features of Gramsci’s approach to marxism, pointing to conclusions important to consider in elaborating revolutionary strategies for advanced capitalist countries today. GRAMSCI’S APPROACH to marxism was so novel that he has been called a neo-marxist’. The novelty starts with his extremely rigorous methodological approach to the content of marxism, and not with the conclusions he reaches. Obviously, one of the greatest dangers in drawing inspiration or creed from a collection of writings is eclecti cism. Marx’ writings, as with those of the Bible, provide ammunition for God and the devil or, at least, have done so for a myriad of mutually contradictory schools of marxism, each claiming to find authority for its propositions in the work of the master. Such a situation immediately raises the question: What is marxism anyway? Gramsci’s method of deciding this question must be the starting point in any examination of his marxism. Without understanding his methodological approach to marxism we cannot understand fully some of his conclusions about what marxism is. Furthermore, if we do not agree with his methology then we cannot of course, agree with his conclusions. Milby 2006 ABSTRACT Soccer playing style has not been addressed in detail in the academic literature, as playing style has often been dismissed as the aesthetic element of the game. Brief mention of playing style is considered when discussing national identity and gender. Through a literature research methodology and detailed study of game situations, this dissertation addresses a definitive definition of playing style and details the cultural elements that influence it. A case study analysis of German and Brazilian soccer exemplifies how cultural elements shape, influence, and intersect with playing style. Eight signature elements of playing style are determined: tactics, technique, body image, concept of soccer, values, tradition, ecological and a miscellaneous category. Each of these elements is then extrapolated for Germany and Brazil, setting up a comparative binary. Literature analysis further reinforces this contrasting comparison. Both history of the country and the sport history of the country are necessary determinants when considering style, as style must be historically situated when being discussed in order to avoid stereotypification. Historic time lines of significant German and Brazilian style changes are determined and interpretated. -

We will examine different methodological foci in cultural history, including visual culture, sound culture, space and spatial analysis, textual and/or discursive analysis, etc. We'll also look at emerging foci of analysis in both fields, such as “empire” and “corporations/global capitalism”. We'll spend time thinking about the ever- vexing questions of “what is culture?” (and what isn't culture), as well as discussing the relationship between interdisciplinary cultural studies and historical analysis, methods and perspectives. This will be accomplished most weeks by examining a central reading in cultural history in the context of cultural studies readings that illuminate the some of the historiographic debates or traditions that underlie its innovations. A number of people have recently argued that we are at a moment of sea change in both history and cultural studies, and that new paradigms are emerging to address new questions. THEORY AND PRACTICE IN GRAMSCI'S MARXISM John Merrington DURING the past decade there has been a growing interest among European socialists in those Marxist writers and activists of the period immediately preceding and following the October Revolution, whose theories grew out of the collapse of the Second International and the failure of the revolutionary wave which swept Europe in 1917-20. The emergence of reformist tendencies in the socialist parties in the pre-war period, the subsequent capitulation of the German SPD, the failure of the socialist leaderships to combat factional tendencies within their parties and their fatal inaction in the face of events immediately following the war, created a situation in which only radical new departures could create new theoretical solutions and hence new practical possibilities. Both Lukacs and Gramsci responded in different ways to this need, moving beyond the terms of the earlier "revisionist debatew-both "revolutionaries" and "reformists" had remained locked within the same basic problematic-carrying out a new diagnosis and prognosis from their experience of the postwar defeat, placing a renewed stress on the active, voluntary component of historical change, on the problem of agency in the making of a revolution. For the increasing incapacity of European social-democrat leader- ships, nakedly revealed in the postwar crisis, was itself the outward manifestation of a more profound malaise; the ossification of bureau- cratic structures of organization went hand in hand with an "official Marxism" based on a rigid set of categorical doctrines, "laws of social development" of the natural-scientific type. The need for a renewal of Marxism in these circumstances was urgent.
