CHAPTER 11.19 ART Garth Evans But, Hands Have Eyes: Six decades of sculpture Until 26.01.20 ‘But, Hands Have Eyes’ is a solo exhibition featuring six decades of sculpture. Alongside works produced in the UK in the 1960s and 70s, Evans also presents a body of work for their UK premiere, that he has produced in the United States since his move there in 1981. The work of Garth Evans is integral to the history of British sculpture. Experimenting with the potential of scale, weight, medium and form, Evans’ work comprises both a formal and conceptual approach. He is always interested in interrogating established boundaries and, as a result, his sculptures are made from a diverse range of materials including ceramics, steel, leather and fibreglass. Evans states that many of his works, even when most abstract, are “triggers for, and containers of, particular identifiable memories”. Ultimately, Garth Evans’ works are ambiguous, multi-faceted and completely original. Talks at 4 16.11.19 FREE Are you interested in finding out a little bit more about our latest exhibition? Then why not join us for a free and informal guided tour! Our ‘Talks at 4’ are led by our wonderful gallery assistants and are a great way to delve a little deeper into our current exhibition by Garth Evans and his approach to his work. No two talks are the same so come along and be a part of the conversation. Art in the Bar Jon Pountney Waiting For The Light Until 14.02.20 ‘Waiting for the Light’ is a body of photographic works that capture a particular type of light; a harsh, acutely angled low sunlight that gives the scenes in Jon Pountney’s images a somewhat surreal and melancholy feel.

  • Dear Xxxx, I Enclose Two Dvds of Some Recent BBC Programming That
Dear xxxx, I enclose two DVDs of some recent BBC programming that I thought you would enjoy. As you may know, the BBC’s Delivering Quality First strategy has resulted in us focusing on five clear content priorities to ensure the BBC meets its public purposes – two of these are to provide ambitious drama and outstanding children’s content. While there is wider concern about the reducing quantity of UK-made children’s TV programming, the BBC’s television channels and websites continue to champion home-grown output – around three quarters of our output is British-made. We are committed to producing and commissioning children’s content that encourages children to develop a love of learning, supports their understanding of the world by tackling issues and, of course, makes them laugh. This must be resonating with our audiences - the BBC’s children’s channels have become the most popular channels in the UK for under-12s. On the enclosed DVD I’ve chosen a range of programming which I hope you will enjoy with your family: CBBC: In an extraordinary, emotional episode of the critically acclaimed documentary series, My Life, Me, My Dad and His Kidney we follow a nine-year old football fan with a one-in-a-million kidney condition whose dad steps forward to donate his own kidney. In multi-award winning comedy sketch show Horrible Histories – packed with fascinating facts, silly songs and gruesome gags – we see Dick Whittington pitching a movie about his life and Stone Age technology geeks queuing for hours at the unveiling of the Bronze Age, and the ever-popular Shaun the Sheep is back in a topical new sporting extravaganza Championsheeps.

  • Mr Chancellor, It May Be That the Simple Secret of Success Is to Find Something You Do Well and Do It to the Best of Your Ability
Mr Chancellor, it may be that the simple secret of success is to find something you do well and do it to the best of your ability. There are some people though whose ability is immense and, happily, what they are able to do well is of great value to others. This is certainly true of Justin Fletcher a.k.a. Mr Tumble, superhero Captain Adorable, weather girl Gail Force, hapless handyman D.I.Y. Dan, newsreader Arthur Sleep and a host of other characters that make innumerable children very happy while extending their communication skills in what can only be regarded as phenomenal ways. Justin has been dubbed a “communication genius”, recognised as “possibly the hardest working man in television” and is regarded by CBeebies as the jewel in their crown. Wherever children are concerned his generosity is as boundless as his energy and good humour. There is an impressive and growing list of pop stars who will attest to him attracting bigger audiences at festivals and public events than them. He is a collector, connoisseur and purveyor of awful jokes (and I am allowed to say that because with Justin’s jokes the more emphasis you can put into the words ‘that was awful!’ the greater the compliment) and even though the gag has been around for over 100 years, somehow when he gets a custard pie in the face it’s still funny. Justin’s dedication to and love of children suggests a powerful link to the force that underpins the work of this University’s Institute of Education and puts it so high in the league table for teacher training.
