Each year, the CKC makes a financial donation towards a student award to support Canadian veterinary colleges like AVC. On behalf of CKC Board Chair Lee Steeves, Ms. Lori Clow, a member of the Lady Slipper Kennel Club, was on hand to present the award to veterinary student, Rachel Purvis, at the Atlantic Veterinary College Recognition night, October 6, 2010. Rachel was, as she put it, “endlessly grateful” for the award and would be putting the money to good use when she travelled to Haiti, where she would endeavour to provide veterinary aid to the animals and veterinary-related education to the people in rural villages. PETLYNX REGISTRATION PASSES THE MILLION MARK PetLynx Corporation announced that it has achieved a significant milestone by registering the one-millionth entity within its automated pet recovery service. PetLynx services are used in more than 211 urban centres across the country, and is the only internet system in the world that can recover animals using a physical description, with or without any of the common forms of pet identification. Hundreds of times a day, the PetLynx Automated National Recovery System recovers lost pets. To date, more than 1,002,195 entities are registered in the PetLynx National Recovery System. President & CEO Larry Evans stated that he was very grateful for the assistance of his company’s strategic allies in Canada, which includes the Canadian Kennel Club. Currently, every dog registered with the CKC receives a lifetime subscription to HOMESAFE, a pet recovery program that is powered by PetLynx. 2 | JANUARY 2011 KENNEL NAMES The following applications for registration of kennel names have been received by The Canadian Kennel Club. • Inbreeding and Ancestor Loss in the Population of Tatra Shepherd Dogs Based on the Sex and Breeding System

The highest number of kennels, that was, 40 were registered in the Lesser Poland voivodeship, in the region of Podhale, which corresponded to 33.06%. For a 4-generation population, the inbreeding rate was 6.52% for male dogs and 6.79% for female dogs. The highest inbreeding rate was found in a nCH and PL groups consisting of both male and female dogs. The inbreeding rate was significantly higher in 2005–2014, amounting to 6.94% for male dogs and 8.22% for female dogs in comparison to the period 1994–2004 when it was 5.87% and 4.88%, respectively. An increasing ancestor loss coefficient (AVK) was found, which may result in an increased number of inbred animals. In particular, it referred to female dogs in the nCH, PL, and Z group, whereas a significant increase of AVK was observed in the group of male dogs from foreign kennels. Studies had shown that there was no risk of inbred depression yet; however, the gene pool of the Tatra Shepherd dog breed had become noticeably restricted.

  • Inbreeding and Relationship in the German Shepherd Dog Population in Area of Cracow Branch of Polish Kennel Club
Scientific Annals of Polish Society of Animal Production - Vol. 7 (2011), No 3, 21-29 Inbreeding and relationship in the German Shepherd dog population in area of Cracow Branch of Polish Kennel Club Joanna Kania-Gierdziewicz1, Bożena Kalinowska2, Maciej Gierdziewicz1 1University of Agriculture in Cracow, Faculty of Animal Sciences, Department of Genetics and Animal Breeding, al. Mickiewicza 24/28, 30-059 Kraków, e-mail: [email protected] 2Cracow Branch of the Polish Kennel Club, ul. Żywiecka 36, 30-427 Kraków The German Shepherd seems to be most popular and widely used dog breed in the world and also in Poland. The aim of the work was to estimate inbreeding and relationship coefficients in the population of German Shepherd dogs from the herdbook of Cracow Branch of the Polish Kennel Club. As the material, four-generation pedigrees of 60 animals (17 dogs and 43 bitches) born in 1994-2005 were used. The inbreeding (FX) and relationship (RXY) coefficients among all animals for each sex separately and RXY between dogs and bitches were calculated. Among all 60 animals 54 were inbred (90%). The FX values for all and for inbred animals were: 0.1286 and 0.1429, respectively. In the group of 17 males 16 were inbred (over 94%) and in the group of 43 females 38 were inbred (88.4%). Average FX was 0.1560, 0.1178, 0.1658, 0.1333 for all dogs, all bitches, inbred dogs and inbred bitches, respectively. About 98.9% of 1770 pairs of individuals were related; for all and related pairs the values of RXY were 0.0391 and 0.0395, respectively.
