Working List of Prairie Restricted (Specialist) Insects in Wisconsin (11/26/2015) By Richard Henderson Research Ecologist, WI DNR Bureau of Science Services Summary This is a preliminary list of insects that are either well known, or likely, to be closely associated with Wisconsin’s original native prairie. These species are mostly dependent upon remnants of original prairie, or plantings/restorations of prairie where their hosts have been re-established (see discussion below), and thus are rarely found outside of these settings. The list also includes some species tied to native ecosystems that grade into prairie, such as savannas, sand barrens, fens, sedge meadow, and shallow marsh. The list is annotated with known host(s) of each insect, and the likelihood of its presence in the state (see key at end of list for specifics). This working list is a byproduct of a prairie invertebrate study I coordinated from1995-2005 that covered 6 Midwestern states and included 14 cooperators. The project surveyed insects on prairie remnants and investigated the effects of fire on those insects. It was funded in part by a series of grants from the US Fish and Wildlife Service. So far, the list has 475 species. However, this is a partial list at best, representing approximately only ¼ of the prairie-specialist insects likely present in the region (see discussion below). Significant input to this list is needed, as there are major taxa groups missing or greatly under represented. Such absence is not necessarily due to few or no prairie-specialists in those groups, but due more to lack of knowledge about life histories (at least published knowledge), unsettled taxonomy, and lack of taxonomic specialists currently working in those groups. -

In this study, a new species of moss-eating flea beetles—Cangshanaltica fuanensis sp. nov. is described; the morphology of the adult and immature stages is described and illustrated. The life history and remarkable biological features of this species are revealed. Females deposit one large egg at a time; egg length equals 0.4–0.5 times the female body length. Females lay and hide each egg under a spoon-shaped moss leaf. There are only two ovarioles on each side of the ovary in the female reproductive system, which has not been reported before in Chrysomelidae. Besides, a modified fan-driven Berlese funnel is designed for faster extraction of moss inhabiting flea beetles. We suggest this improved device could also be useful for collecting other ground-dwelling arthropods. -

Furth National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., USA Abstract. The current state of knowledge of the diversity for Alticinae recorded from Mexico is taken from the histori- cal literature, determined specimens primarily in the U.S. National Museum, including material collected by the author, as well as from several other institutions. An Appendix is provided containing a list of generic and specific names re- corded from Mexico, including the known distribution for each species by Mexican state and the source for that infor- mation. There are 89 genera and 524 species currently known from Mexico. Although preliminary, this is a significant increase from the published literature. The Alticinae species diversity per Mexican state is also provided. Some discus- sion of the Mexican Alticinae biogeographic affinities is given. The following changes in status are made: Syphrea bibi- ana Bechyné = Nesaecrepida infúscala (Schaeffer); Palaeothona Jacoby is raised from synonymy with Lupraea Jacoby and considered valid; Varicoxa Bechyné = Luperaltica Crotch; Kitschelina gracilis Jacoby is raised from synonymy with K. laeta (Perbosc) and considered valid; Aphthona dimidiaticornis Jacoby, A. fulvipennis Jacoby, A. maculipennis Jacoby, A. mexicana (Jacoby), A. pallipes (Jacoby), A. semipunctata Jacoby, and A. substriata Jacoby are all considered to be in Centralaphthona Bechyné; Aphthona amulensis Jacoby = Genaphthona Bechyné; Aphthonajulvitarsis Jacoby = Gioia Bechyné; A. championi Jacoby = Lupraea. -

Wisconsin Wildlife Action Plan 3.5 Invertebrate Species of Greatest Conservation Need 3.5 Invertebrate Species of Greatest Conservation Need This is an overview of Wisconsin’s invertebrate Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) and their associations with Natural Communities and Ecological Landscapes. This section also identifies invertebrate species that are not classified as SGCN, but are classified as BasicSINS (species with information needs), RankingSINS, or species that had sufficient information to assess them with confidence and did not meet the SGCN criteria (e.g., ranked S4 or S5, ranked S3G5 or S3S4G5, or did not meet the additional criteria considered after assessing S/G-Ranks). See Section 2.6 for more explanation on ranking and SINS. The issues, challenges and conservation actions that will be important for most or all invertebrate SGCN over the next ten years are presented in the second half of this section along with those applicable to one or a few invertebrate species. The discussion of the issues and challenges facing invertebrate SGCN and their habitat, and the conservation actions that address them, follows nomenclature developed by the Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation.1 The Open Standards classification for Conservation Actions, with some modification for circumstances particular to Wisconsin, is presented in Appendix 2.1 at the end of Section 2. When dealing with invertebrates, it is often necessary to reconcile conflicts in the scientific nomenclature used by different researchers. Such conflicts result from advances in the description and documentation of previously undescribed invertebrate species and a changing understanding of evolutionary relationships. To ensure the most up-to-date taxonomic labels, scientific names from the Tree of Life Web Project (The University of Arizona 2004) were used. -

Wisconsin Natural Heritage Working List The Wisconsin Natural Heritage Working List contains species known or suspected to be rare in the state and natural communities native to Wisconsin, together referred to as “Elements”. It includes species legally designated as "Endangered" or "Threatened" as well as species in the advisory "Special Concern" category. Most of the elements on the list are actively tracked and we encourage data submissions for all elements listed. This list is meant to be dynamic and may be updated as often as new information regarding the biological status of elements becomes available. The Natural Heritage Program welcomes your input on any aspect of this list. Wisconsin’s Extirpated Species List is included at the end. Changes from the previous list (06/14) are bolded. LE = listed endangered; LT = listed threatened; PE = proposed for listed as endangered; PT = proposed for listed as threatened; NEP = nonessential experimental population(s) in part of its range; C = candidate for future listing; CH = Critical Habitat; SOC = *Species of Concern; HPR = High Potential Range. *Federal Species of Concern are those species that may be in need of concentrated conservation actions, which vary depending on the health of the populations and degree and types of threats. -

Staines and S. L. Staines 3302 Decker Place, Edgewater, MD 21037 Abstract: Chrysomelids are model herbivores. Most species are monophagous or narrowly oligo- phagous on a small number of plant families. In the tropics, the area most studied, chrysomelids have been found to be an excellent indicator of local species richness, due to not only their relative abundance but the ease of morphospecies sorting by a nonspecialist. The diversity of chrysomelids is exceptionally rich and a function of local plant diversity. These factors make chrysomelids an excellent candidate for indicator species assemblages for natural area monitoring. A project was started in 1997 on Plummers Island, Maryland, to determine whether chrysomelid species assemblages are indicators of plant diversity, site disturbance, and environmental heterogeneity. At this site we have the advantage of historical collection data dating back to 1901 that can be used as baseline information. : - ' , • INTRODUCTION .. the major shapers of ecosystems.
