Darnton The French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu once remarked that Robert Damton’s principal shortcoming as a scholar is that he “writes too well.” This prodigious talent, which arouses such suspicion of aristocratic pretension among social scientists in republican France, has made him nothing less than an academic folk hero in America—one who is read with equal enthusiasm and pleasure by scholars and the public at large. Darnton’ s work improbably blends a strong dose of Cartesian rationalism with healthy portions of Dickensian grit and sentiment. The result is a uniquely American synthesis of the finest traits of our British and French ancestors—a vision of the past that is at once intellectually bracing and captivatingly intimate. fascination with the making of modem Western democracies came easily to this true blue Yankee. Born in New York City on the eve of the Second World War, the son of two reporters at the New York Times, Robert Damton has always had an immediate grasp of what it means to be caught up in the fray of modem world historical events.     COVER A typical summer Sunday afternoon at Jacksonville Beach during the early 1930s. Promoted as the “World’s Finest Beach,” visitors came from all over Florida and Georgia. Forty miles long and 600 feet wide, the hard-packed white sand made the beach a “mecca of autoists,” and it was said that some- times as many as 15,000 cam were parked there on a weekend. Originally called Pablo Beach, the community was established by the Jacksonville and Atlantic Railroad in 1884. Murray Hall, an enormous wood- frame hotel with accommodations for 350 guests, was completed two years later. It was one of the South’s most popular seaside resorts until it was destroyed by fire in 1890. It had attracted many visitors to the beach com- munity.     Gordon A. Craig President American Historical Association 1982 11 } Gordon Alexander Craig, president of the American Historical Association, is the J. E. Wallace Sterling Professor of the Humanities at Stanford University. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1913; at the age of twelve he immigrated to the U.S. from Canada with his parents. He attended Princeton University where he re ceived his AB in 1936, the MA in 1939, and his PhD in 1941. During this period he was also a Rhodes Scholar to Oxford where he received a B.Litt. in 1938. His field is ndern Europe with research interests focusing on Germany since 1648, diplomacy, and military affairs. Professor Craig taught as an instructor at Yale Uni versity from 1939 to 1941; after two years he returned to Princeton to teach there. He remained at Princeton for the next twenty years: from 1941 to 1943 as an instruc tor, from 1943 to 1949 as associate professor, and from 1950 to 1961 as full professor. Concurrently he was a visiting professor at Columbia University in 1947—48 and in 1949—50. In 1961 he imjved to Stanford where he teaches three days a week to classes of four hundred students. He is widely regarded as aong the greatest of the uni versity’s teachers, and in recognition of his vital con tribution to scholarship and teaching he became the first J. E. Wallace Sterling Professot of the Humanities in 1969, a rank he still holds. He chaired the history de partment from 1972 to 1975 and again from 1978 to 1979, and had a great impact in strengthening the department.

THE COVER Michelle Corona-Allen of the University of Oklahoma Communication Services designed the cover of this book. The three photographs feature images closely associated with Walter Stanley Campbell and his research on Native American history and culture. From left to right, the first photograph shows a ledger drawing by Sioux chief White Bull that depicts him capturing two horses from a camp in 1876. The second image is of Walter Stanley Campbell talking with White Bull in the early 1930s. Campbell’s oral interviews of prominent Indians during 1928-1932 formed the basis of some of his most respected books on Indian history. The third photograph is of another White Bull ledger drawing in which he is shown taking horses from General Terry’s advancing column at the Little Big Horn River, Montana, 1876. Of this act, White Bull stated, “This made my name known, taken from those coming below, soldiers and Crows were camped there.” Available from University of Oklahoma Western History Collections 630 Parrington Oval, Room 452 Norman, Oklahoma 73019 No state-appropriated funds were used to publish this guide. We believe that in order to do this, we need to hire staff. Project management, whether building a park or buying land, requires a level of commitment and expertise that goes beyond what our volunteers can give on a sustained level over time. We are not the first land trust to discover this, of course. I have read many times that the one characteristic that distinguishes a successful land trust from one that just gets by is full-time staff. And it is urgent that we be successful. If we don’t protect the high priority lands in our conservation plan (http://www.alta denafoothills.org/af_conservationplan.html), within the next five to ten years the Altadena foothills will be built out. The time is now. With land values soaring, property owners are looking to cash in on their long term investments. Developers are in a better situation than they have ever been to pay high land prices and build mansions that will sell for over $1 million in the Altadena foothills. Glendale is pretty much built out, Sierra Madre is fighting over their last tracts of open land, and developers rightly are looking here for their next big project.
