We have had two great A question: what words come to mind when you think about your Year 5 class collective worships with Mrs Hartley’s class attitude to money? A second question: if you were to win the lottery celebrating World Book Day and Miss Cone’s class (yes, the question assumes you’ve bought a ticket but stay with me...) celebrating Sport Relief. Both classes also set the what would you do with the cash? school challenges during the day relating to the events A recent group I was with answered the first question with words like which were enjoyed by all. These included older children reading and ‘careful’ and ‘prudent’. No one in my group seemed ever likely to ‘splash the cash’ in a Our Key Stage 2 children have also been involved in reckless manner, for money represented work (often hard work) and its a cross country event with seven children value was appreciated accordingly. The same set of words followed through with my second question. A lottery win would see some money progressing to the County cross country final. As Christians we are called to be responsible stewards of the gifts we have received children. from God. As a church we present annual accounts, we try to be open We have also been set a sporting challenge this month from Alverton about how and where we spend money and we handle all that comes into School in Northallerton to “Run to Rio” linked to the forthcoming our accounts with due diligence and care. We are awarded ‘miles’ for exercising in and out of words that perhaps need to be heard more regularly in Christian school and each week we add up our miles to see which school has discussion about finance and these words are the gospel words of “run” the furthest. This month, in these great days of Easter, the Church Council is nd launching a stewardship programme entitled ‘Giving in Grace’. Of On Monday 22 February any Rainbow, Brownie, Guide, Beaver, Cub or course, every family needs to balance its books and ‘live within its Scout who wanted to, could wear their uniform to school to celebrate means’ - the church is no different. Yet our giving to the work of God’s their organisations’ Thinking Day. It was great to see so many of our church isn’t really about balancing the books or paying the bills at all. children involved in these uniformed organisations. Rather, our giving is a response to the overflowing generosity of God Many families enjoyed participating in our Big Breakfast on Monday that we receive each and every day. We give because we seek to imitate 7th March. “Sit down for breakfast, stand up for farmers” was a giant His giving. So ‘Giving in Grace’ is not a one off appeal for funds, rather it is an invitation to join in the overflow of God’s giving so that all Fairtrade breakfast in support of farmers who grow the food we have people and all things might in turn give praise to God for His generosity every morning such as coffee, tea, cocoa and bananas. Our school hall and love shown through us. was full with children, parents and carers enjoying a special start to Alec the school day. 5 6 Our Year 6 pupils recently enjoyed a Safety Carousel event organised by Durham County Council Fire and Rescue Brigade. This involved informative workshops led by the Fire Service, Northern Powergrid, Police, Durham County Council and the RNLI. During this term all children have been busy producing brilliant homework for our Life on Earth topic and we are very impressed with the models, creations and facts which the children have created and researched. All classes have created a fantastic display in our school hall which parents and carers have enjoyed looking at. To link with this topic all of Key Stage 2 children have also visited Middleton Mart to explore the world of farming and enjoyed lots of farming related activities. Finally as our spring term ends we say goodbye to Mrs Atkinson who is taking up an exciting new post as an outdoor education specialist. Happy Easter to everyone. Mrs Linsley and Mrs Hartley Once again the school are collecting “Active Kids” vouchers from Sainsbury’s - if you have any to spare please pass them to Frances Stenlake or put in the “S” pigeonhole. A “Welcome Café” before the service offered coffee, tea, lemonade and home-made Cuban cookies. The church was hung with Cuban flags and resounded to lively Cuban music and modern hymns very appropriate to the theme. An eight-minute meditation period was backed by images of Cuba and quiet music. A dramatized reading describing the lives and challenges of the people of Cuba was presented by members of the congregation including three girls from Barnard Castle School who were accompanied by the School Chaplain, Revd. Darren Moore. Joan Johnson was the organist and the service was led by Iris Hillery. Over 50 women and men attended the morning service with a further service being held in the afternoon at St. Cuthbert’s, Cotherstone. The theme of the service “Receive children, Receive me” focused on the call for us to accept every human being as unique and equally worthy to God – young and old, rich and poor, just and unjust – whoever they are. Mariposa ‘prayer flowers’ were given to everyone in the congregation who could write on each tag the name of someone they would like to pray for.
