This month, in these great days of Easter, the Church Council is nd launching a stewardship programme entitled ‘Giving in Grace’. Of On Monday 22 February any Rainbow, Brownie, Guide, Beaver, Cub or course, every family needs to balance its books and ‘live within its Scout who wanted to, could wear their uniform to school to celebrate means’ - the church is no different. Yet our giving to the work of God’s their organisations’ Thinking Day. It was great to see so many of our church isn’t really about balancing the books or paying the bills at all. children involved in these uniformed organisations. Rather, our giving is a response to the overflowing generosity of God Many families enjoyed participating in our Big Breakfast on Monday that we receive each and every day. We give because we seek to imitate 7th March. “Sit down for breakfast, stand up for farmers” was a giant His giving. So ‘Giving in Grace’ is not a one off appeal for funds, rather it is an invitation to join in the overflow of God’s giving so that all Fairtrade breakfast in support of farmers who grow the food we have people and all things might in turn give praise to God for His generosity every morning such as coffee, tea, cocoa and bananas. This involved informative workshops led by the Fire Service, Northern Powergrid, Police, Durham County Council and the RNLI.

During this term all children have been busy producing brilliant homework for our Life on Earth topic and we are very impressed with the models, creations and facts which the children have created and researched. All classes have created a fantastic display in our school hall which parents and carers have enjoyed looking at. To link with this topic all of Key Stage 2 children have also visited Middleton Mart to explore the world of farming and enjoyed lots of farming related activities. Finally as our spring term ends we say goodbye to Mrs Atkinson who is taking up an exciting new post as an outdoor education specialist.

Happy Easter to everyone. Mrs Linsley and Mrs Hartley

St. Mary’s Parish Church, Barnard Castle hosted the 2016 Women’s World Day of Prayer service which was planned by the Christian women of Cuba. A “Welcome Café” before the service offered coffee, tea, lemonade and home-made Cuban cookies. The church was hung with Cuban flags and resounded to lively Cuban music and modern hymns very appropriate to the theme. An eight-minute meditation period was backed by images of Cuba and quiet music. A dramatized reading describing the lives and challenges of the people of Cuba was presented by members of the congregation including three girls from Barnard Castle School who were accompanied by the School Chaplain, Revd. Darren Moore. Joan Johnson was the organist and the service was led by Iris Hillery. Over 50 women and men attended the morning service with a further service being held in the afternoon at St. Cuthbert’s, . The theme of the service “Receive children, Receive me” focused on the call for us to accept every human being as unique and equally worthy to God – young and old, rich and poor, just and unjust – whoever they are. Mariposa ‘prayer flowers’ were given to everyone in the congregation who could write on each tag the name of someone they would like to pray for. These were presented at the altar along with the offering of £245.40 which will be given to the work of the international WWDP Committee. People could take a flower home to pray for the person named or leave them in St. Margaret’s Chapel to be included in the prayers of the Church. After the service many people went across to the Parish Hall to enjoy a Lent Lunch and more Cuban cookies. Next years’ service will be held on Friday 4th March at the Methodist Church, Scar Top, Barnard Castle at 11.00 am.

9 Iris Hillery 10 Barnard Castle’s 10.30 am Palm Sunday service included a euphonium solo played by Matthew Littlefair and accompanied by the organist Annette Butters. 19 20 We were again addressed by Dame Sheena Davies on her continuing work concerning the St John of Jerusalem Eye hospitals in Palestine. Dame Sheena had visited these hospitals last October. As on the occasion of her last visit she described the difficulties that the Order and patients had to endure in coming to attend the hospitals. The situation she told us was not good; indeed, on occasion we would call it barbaric. For instance, a Palestinian lady wishing to go to the eye hospital had first to negotiate a check point. She asked to be searched by a female officer. She insisted, and as a result, was shot and died. As ever the innocent suffer. In the ruins of Gaza, the new hospital being built had the eye department on the fourth floor thus requiring lifts: these were held up by the Israelis at the docks for six months. Dame Sheena then showed us a new DVD produced by the Order. This proved to be both interesting and challenging. There has been a hospital in Jerusalem since 1882 due to the efforts of Queen Victoria. A positive note in an otherwise challenging film was the fact that the Order was one of the Citizens Advice County Durham few NGOs that had co-operation from both Israel and Palestine. The Adviceline: 03444 111 444; Order treated over 124,000 people a year in one or other of their hospitals. Debt Advice Line: 0300 323 2000 Once in hospital neither race nor religion nor politics mattered, only medicine. Of the cases seen, 75% were treatable. We noticed that Opening hours 21 Galgate emphasis was placed on the fact that the Order was not dealing with Monday 10 am to 4 pm Barnard Castle ‘Handouts’ and saw to it that Palestinians were trained as doctors and Wednesday 10 am to 4 pm County Durham nurses.
