Photosynthesis (Quick Questions) 1. What is the word equation for photosynthesis? 2. Describe what happens during photosynthesis. 3. Why do plants use glucose for? 4. What does a plant convert glucose to if it isn’t used straight away? 5. How can iodine be used to test for photosynthesis? 6. Name 4 adaptations of a leaf 7. How are algae plants (aquatic plants) adapted to photosynthesise in water? 8. What are limiting factors? 9. Name 3 limiting factors of photosynthesis 10. Name 4 ways in which a plant uses the glucose produced by photosynthesis. 11. Why is glucose not stored in plants and instead converted to starch for storage? 12. Where is starch stored in a plant? 13. Why do plants grow faster in a greenhouse than outside? 14. What are hydroponics? Photosynthesis (Quick Answers) 1. (+ light energy) Carbon dioxide + water glucose + oxygen 2. Light energy is absorbed by the chlorophyll in the chloroplasts. This energy is used to convert carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil into the simple sugar glucose and the by-product oxygen. 3. They use it for respiration to provide energy for cell functions such as growth and reproduction. 4. Starch (which is insoluble). 5. Iodine can be used. It turns from a yellow-brown colour to a dark blue colour if starch is present, which means photosynthesis has taken place. 6. a. Broad leaves, giving them a big surface area for light to fall on. b. Contain chlorophyll in the chloroplasts to absorb light energy. c. have air spaces (in the spongy layer) that allow carbon dioxide to get to the cells, and oxygen to leave then by diffusion. d. Have veins, which bring plenty of water to the cells of the leaves. 7. They absorb the carbon dioxide dissolved in the water around them. 8. Limiting factors are something which limits the rate of a reaction (e.g. photosynthesis). 9. a. Amount of light b. Temperature c. Carbon dioxide levels 10. Any from: respiration; energy for cell functions; growth; reproduction; building up smaller molecules into bigger molecules; converted into starch for storage; making cellulose; making amino acids; building up fats and oils for a food store in seeds. 11. Glucose is soluble in water, so if it is stored in plant cells to affects the way water moves into and out of cells. Starch is insoluble so has no effect on the water balance in plant cells. 12. All over the plant; cells of the leaves (where provides an energy source for when it is dark or light levels low);tubers and bulbs (these help them survive through winter) 13. The atmosphere is warmer which increases the rate of photosynthesis, so plants make more food and grow faster. 14. Plants are grown in mineral enriched water rather than soil, everything is controlled included temperature, carbon dioxide levels and light levels. .
