By Perin Ilavia The grand old man of India, Dadabhai Naoroji, born in 1783, was a great political thinker and ranks among the greatest Indian patriots. He was the first founder-editor of the newspaper Rast Goftara through which he challenged Britain to stop draining India of its wealth. At 28 he became the first Indian professor of mathematics at Elphinstone College. By founding the Parsi Natak Mandali in 1853 he established modern theatre in Bombay. Going to England in 1855, he started the first Indian firm in London and Liverpool and founded the first Asian Religious Association in Britain in 1861. He was the first Indian to be elected Member of Parliament for the Liberal Party at Westminster, London in 1892, campaigning vigorously for Indian Independence. A close friend of Mahatma Gandhi he was a founding member of the Indian National Congress and the first baronet in the British Raj. Naoroji was a close friend of Mahatma Gandhi and the first baronet in the British Raj.

The classical or 'analytic- dramatic' style will be contrasted with modernist strategies of storytelling developed in contemporary cinema. The workshop will conclude with screening-cum-discussion on two documentaries. Suresh Chabria taught Political Science at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, before joining the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, as Professor of Film Appreciation. He was Director of the National Film Archive of India from 1992—1998 during which period he initiated several restorations and programming events showcasing Indian film heritage. He has published several articles on cinema and a book, Light of Asia: Indian Silent Cinema 1912- 1934 that is perhaps the most authoritative publication on the subject. We appreciate all the support we have received and hope to continue to provide you good quality works. Prinseps has an exceptional double sided Ram Kumar from the 1960s for auction. This is particularly rare because it is abstract in front and figurative at the back. Ram Kumar was an artist that never returned to his figurative style and so this work is incredibly important. This work is also extremely rare as double sided works are essentially possible only on boards and unlikely on canvases. It belongs to the formative years of the Progressive Modern Art Auction Artists’ Group movement, what some might describe as the beginning of modernism in India, and therefore of critical importance. 24 - 25 April 2019 This auction boasts of a F.N. Souza 1948 work which was done in Goa soon after he left the J. J. School of Art. This work is a part of the Souza in the 40s exhibition.
