  • ITALIAN VOLPINO (Volpino Italiano)
FCI-Standard N° 195 / 09. 06. 1999 / GB ITALIAN VOLPINO (Volpino Italiano) 2 TRANSLATION : Mrs. Peggy Davis. ORIGIN : Italy. DATE OF PUBLICATION OF THE ORIGINAL VALID STANDARD : 27.11.1989. UTILIZATION : Guard and companion dog. CLASSIFICATION F.C.I. : Group 5 Spitz and primitive type. Section 4 European Spitz. Without working trial. BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY : He is one of the descendants of the European Spitz which already existed in the central region of our continent since the Bronze Age and of which skeleton fossils have been discovered around the foundation piles of the dwellings on stilts. So the Volpino goes back to the same ancestors as the German Spitz of which he is not a descendant, but a relative. He has been bred in Italy since immemorial times and has been idolized in the palaces of the noblemen as well as in the hovels of the common people, where he was especially appreciated because of his instinct of guard and vigilance. He was the dog of Michelangelo, and, in the 18th century, the tireless companion of the carters of Tuscany and Latium, always ready to announce noisily any strange persons met on the roads. GENERAL APPEARANCE : Small size Spitz, very compact, harmonious, with a long stand-off coat. IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS : Built into a square, length of head reaches nearly the 4/10th of that of the body. BEHAVIOUR / TEMPERAMENT : Very attached to his environment and his family, of a very distinct temperament, lively, gay and playful. HEAD : Pyramid shape, length reaching almost the 4/10ths of the height at the withers.

  • The Origin of the Tibetan Mastiff and Species Identification of Canis Based on Mitochondrial Cytochrome C Oxidase Subunit I (COI) Gene and COI Barcoding
Animal (2011), 5:12, pp 1868–1873 & The Animal Consortium 2011 animal doi:10.1017/S1751731111001042 The origin of the Tibetan Mastiff and species identification of Canis based on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene and COI barcoding - - Y. Li 1, X. Zhao2,Z.Pan1, Z. Xie1, H. Liu1,Y.Xu1 and Q. Li1 1College of Animal Science and Technology, Nanjing Agricultural University, Nanjing 210095, China; 2College of Animal Science and Technology, State Key Laboratory for Agrobiotechnology, China Agricultural University, Beijing 100094, China (Received 28 December 2010; Accepted 24 April 2011; First published online 11 July 2011) DNA barcoding is an effective technique to identify species and analyze phylogenesis and evolution. However, research on and application of DNA barcoding in Canis have not been carried out. In this study, we analyzed two species of Canis, Canis lupus (n 5 115) and Canis latrans (n 5 4), using the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene (1545 bp) and COI barcoding (648 bp DNA sequence of the COI gene). The results showed that the COI gene, as the moderate variant sequence, applied to the analysis of the phylogenesis of Canis members, and COI barcoding applied to species identification of Canis members. Phylogenetic trees and networks showed that domestic dogs had four maternal origins (A to D) and that the Tibetan Mastiff originated from Clade A; this result supports the theory of an East Asian origin of domestic dogs. Clustering analysis and networking revealed the presence of a closer relative between the Tibetan Mastiff and the Old English sheepdog, Newfoundland, Rottweiler and Saint Bernard, which confirms that many well-known large breed dogs in the world, such as the Old English sheepdog, may have the same blood lineage as that of the Tibetan Mastiff.

The aim of this study was genomic charac- terization (107,403 autosomal SNPs) of the three LGD breeds from the Balkans (Karst Shepherd, Sharplanina Dog, and Tornjak). Our analyses were performed on 44 dogs representing three Balkan LGD breeds, as well as on 79 publicly available genotypes representing eight other LGD breeds, 70 individuals representing seven popular breeds, and 18 gray wolves. The results of multivariate, phylogenetic, clustering (STRUCTURE), and FST differentiation analyses showed that the three Balkan LGD breeds are genetically distinct populations. While the Sharplanina Dog and Tornjak are closely related to other LGD breeds, the Karst Shepherd is a slightly genetically distinct population with estimated influence from German Shepard (Treemix analysis). Estimated genomic diversity was high with low inbreeding in Sharplanina Dog (Ho = 0.315, He = 0.315, and FROH>2Mb = 0.020) and Citation: Janeš, M.; Zorc, M.; Tornjak (Ho = 0.301, He = 0.301, and FROH>2Mb = 0.033) breeds.
