SOFIE VAN BAUWEL ACADEMIEJAAR 2015 – 2016 ABSTRACT In Amerikaanse mainstream comics zoals die van Marvel en DC comics is er vaak sprake van een onevenwichtige en zelfs een vertekende representatie van gender en seksuele diversiteit en dat heeft men voor een groot deel te danken aan de conventies van het genre. Gender en seksuele diversiteit leunen echter aan bij het constructivistische en zijn dus met andere woorden allesbehalve deterministisch. De heteronorm die daarnaast vaak aangewend wordt in comics, zorgt er bovendien voor dat de hegemonie van heteroseksuele, cisgender personages in stand gehouden blijft. Comics brengen net zoals andere populaire media betekenissen over en in de meeste gevallen is het zo dat enkele de betekenissen die hegemonisch zijn in onze maatschappij overgebracht worden. Aangezien comics ons rolmodellen bieden voor gedrag en voorkomen, is het belangrijk de representatie van gender en seksuele diversiteit in comics vanuit enkele kernconcepten in vraag te stellen. Deze masterproef vertrekt vanuit de cultural studies-traditie (Storey, 2006) en houdt rekening met het sociaal-constructivistisch paradigma om kritisch te kijken naar hoe er in comics omgegaan wordt met tegenstellingen zoals mannelijkheid vs. vrouwelijkheid en heteroseksualiteit vs. niet- heteroseksualiteit. Om een kwalitatieve tekstuele analyse (McKee, 2003) uit te voeren, worden in totaal 50 single issue comics onderzocht, waarvan de helft uitgegeven door Marvel en de andere helft door DC Comics. Belangrijk hierbij is te kijken of er nog steeds teruggegrepen wordt naar de klassieke representatiestrategieën (Hall, 1997) voor de constructie van gender en seksuele diversiteit in hedendaagse stripverhalen, of er in plaats daarvan eerder progressief en zelfs subversief te werk gegaan wordt. 2 DANKWOORD In dit voorwoord wens ik in de eerste plaats mijn promotor Prof. Dr. Frederik Dhaenens te bedanken voor de goede begeleiding en de uitvoerige feedback tijdens het werkcollege. Tijdens het werkcollege kreeg ik daarnaast telkens nuttige feedback van mijn discussante Jiline en ook dankzij mijn andere medestudenten uit de werkgroep deed ik vaak nieuwe inzichten op, waarvoor dank. Voor de positieve moraal en de nodige steun kon ik terecht bij mijn vrienden en mijn vriendin, en ook voor het nalezen van dit werk kon ik – gelukkig – rekenen op mijn vriendin Evi.
