  • “Aspects of Danish Cinema”
Programme of Danish Film Screenings at the Danish Institute at Athens 2018 “Aspects of Danish Cinema”. By Ioanna Athanassatou/Film Historic at the Greek Open University & the University of Athens Screening on the 26th of April 2018 Silent heart (2014) by Bille August In film screening programme of the last 2 years, we have had the chance to see I line of Danish movies from Carl Dreyer, Lars von Trier, Susanne Bier and Thomas Vinterberg. Today we have chosen to screen “Silent heart” - in Danish ”Stille hjerte” and in Greek “Αθόρυβη καρδιά” (2014) by Bille August, the fourth movie this year. Bille August is considered the total opposite to Lars Von Trier and Vinterberg with a great international reputation. The filmography of Bille August includes two movies that both were awarded with the Golden Palms in Cannes: “Pelle the Conqueror” (1988) and “The best intentions” (1992). In these movies, including today´s, the director is closer to the cinematic perception of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman (Valoukos 2003, page 630), avoiding formalistic searching, but focusing on the mental state of his heroes. When August directed the movie in 2014, he was inspired by the Scandinavian drama of Ibsen and Strindberg, but also by the philosophic/religious meditation of Søren Kierkegaard. “Silent heart” touches upon the very complex and emotional issue of euthanasia. It was awarded at International festivals and was admitted at the European Art House. The movie is about the family gathering of three generations, coming together for the weekend inorder to say their last goodbye to Esther (Ghita Nørby) – mother and grandmother – who is sick from the incurable disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

  • Dogme 95 and the Representation of Reality Zsolt Gyenge Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Budapest (Hungary) Email: [email protected]
Acta Univ. Sapientiae, Film and Media Studies, 1 (2009) 6979 Illusions of Reality and Fiction or the Desired Reality of Fiction: Dogme 95 and the Representation of Reality Zsolt Gyenge Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Budapest (Hungary) email: [email protected] Abstract. The paper identies a two channel strategy developed by the authors of the Danish Dogme lms having as goal the generation of the illusion of reality. The rst channel is aiming at the visual layer of the movies, which shows a rm decision to break with the style of the traditional ction lms. The second channel of this strategy is concerned with the narration of the lms. In this regard Dogme contrary to what had been declared in the Vow of Chastity chose one of the most popular lm and TV genres: melodrama. On the one hand Dogme lms created a highly self-reexive visual style and then they combined it on the other hand with a genre which calls for extreme audience identication. Documentarism and deeply conventionalized stories are put together in most Dogme lms to create the reality of ction. Movie is not an illusion states the Manifesto,1 and thus it makes us clear that the movement tries to say something about one of the major themes of cinema and lm theory (and of visual communication in general): the representation of reality. It is well known that the initiators of Dogme 952 1The two founding documents of the Dogme 95 are the Manifesto and the Vow of Chastity. Until recently they were to be found on the ocial website (www.dogme95.dk) of the movement, which in February 2009, during the nal revision of this paper, became unavailable.

Dodd Watkins College of Art, Design, and Film, [email protected] Recommended Citation Dodd, Kevin V. (2012) "Whale Rider: The Re-enactment of Myth and the Empowerment of Women," Journal of Religion & Film: Vol. 16 : Iss. 2 , Article 9. Available at: https://digitalcommons.unomaha.edu/jrf/vol16/iss2/9 This Article is brought to you for free and open access by DigitalCommons@UNO. It has been accepted for inclusion in Journal of Religion & Film by an authorized editor of DigitalCommons@UNO. For more information, please contact [email protected]. Whale Rider: The Re-enactment of Myth and the Empowerment of Women Abstract Whale Rider represents a particular type of mythic film that includes within it references to an ancient sacred story and is itself a contemporary recapitulation of it. The movie also belongs to a further subcategory of mythic cinema, using the double citation of the myth—in its original form and its re-enactment—to critique the subordinate position of women to men in the narrated world. To do this, the myth is extended beyond its traditional scope and context. After looking at how the movie embeds the story and recapitulates it, this paper examines the film’s reception. To consider the variety of positions taken by critics, it then analyses the traditional myth as well as how the book first worked with it. The onclusionc is, in distinction to the book, that the film drives a wedge between the myth’s original sacred function to provide meaning in the world for the Maori people and its extended intention to empower women, favoring the latter at the former’s expense.

His parents immigrated from Mexico and established themselves in the Inland Empire region east of Los Angeles. In 2009, Ramiro moved to West Hollywood and took a job as a live-in nanny for an affluent family. While on duty, he observed the many Latino workers who would arrive daily to assist in the household maintenance. Growing up as a member of a working class Hispanic family, Ramiro sympathized with their work and began a series of observational drawings that would later form the body of work he titled “Happy Hills”. This body of work, the artist explains, is a “…documentation of the predominantly Hispanic workforce who work tirelessly behind the scenes to maintain the beautiful imagery of these affluent areas.” Through the help of social media, Gomez’s paintings and street installations in Beverly Hills began to garner attention. The immigrant experience is the exclusive focus of Ramiro and he continues to expand his work in a public manner. • Mad Max, Reaganism and the Road Warrior
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Waterloo Library Journal Publishing Service (University of Waterloo, Canada) Mad Max, Reaganism and The Road Warrior By J. Emmett Winn Fall 1997 Issue of KINEMA IN 1981 THE AUSTRALIAN-MADE FILM The Road Warrior drove into the US film market.(1) The film was well received and quickly became, at that time, the most popular Australian movie ever releasedin the US, and since its debut has played regularly on US cable television.(2) Much has been written about the international success of this film and its predecessor, Mad Max, and the last in the trilogy Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.(3) Contributing to that body of research, this paper addresses the American success of this Australian film within the cultural/political context of the US at the time of its North American release, and discusses its resonance with Reaganism. The fundamental goal of this examination is to situate the films in the larger context of cultural hegemony. The importance of this study lies in the critique of these films as they aid us in understanding the hegemonic process and the American box office triumph of The Road Warrior. I investigate how the trilogy in general, and The Road Warrior specifically, resonates with the social field of its time. These films entered the US during a period of renewed nationalistic interest and conservatism linked with the Reagan/Bush administrations. As Stuart Hall explains, the meanings of cultural products are partially provided by their time. In his article ”Notes on Deconstructing ’The Popular’” he states: The meaning of a cultural symbol is given in part by the social field into which it is incorporated, the practices which it articulates and is made to resonate.
