In the recent months, we have seen Beijing continue its crackdown on the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong with the mass arrest and charging of 47 pro-democracy activists under the National Security Law, the introduction of electoral reform which would prevent pro- democracy parties from standing for election, the freezing of the owner of Apple Daily Jimmy Lai’s assets, the passing of an Immigration Bill which would give the Chinese Government the power to restrict freedom of movement into and out of the city, and the banning of the June 4 Tiananmen Square vigil. In the middle of Beijing’s destruction of Hong Kong’s autonomy, rule of law, and way of life, stand thousands of Canadian citizens who are fearful of their future in the city. They are desperately waiting on the Canadian Government and its allies to act. With nearly every prominent pro-democracy voice in Hong Kong in jail, awaiting trial, or overseas in exile, it is clear that there is an increased need for a robust and coordinated response against the Hong Kong officials who are responsible for human rights abuses and the crackdown on the pro- democracy movement in the city.

    April 28, 2020 Honourable Catherine McKenna Minister of Infrastructure and Communities [email protected] Dear Minister McKenna, We write as twenty (20) business organizations representing a broad cross-section of Manitoba’s economy collectively employing tens of thousands of women and men. Those industries include engineering & consulting, heavy civil and 2 vertical construction, commercial and residential development, manufacturing & exporting, retail, agriculture, commercial trucking and skilled trades. Our appeal to the federal government is that it assist in our provincial economic recovery by accelerating the approvals of and flexibility in the allocation from federal programs. Such measures would enable funding of key Manitoba projects that would immediately procure jobs, build legacy assets and be key instruments in help kick-staring Manitoba’s economy. The above is necessary to help correct the lack of confidence in the economy by all its sectors, the alarm, anxiety and fear of what lies ahead around the corner, and indeed where that corner is. That has led to private-sector projects being deferred or outright canceled. Those decision have resulted in lost jobs, supply and equipment sales, all of which reduces the collective ROI to GDP. Addressing consumer and investor confidence is critical to our recovery. In that regard, we understand the Province of Manitoba has communicated its commitment to flow its capital programs, harnessing investment in infrastructure to help Manitoba’s economy recover. We are told Manitoba has more than $6B in project submissions for the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) with many being shovel ready. We urge the federal government to make the most of the current market conditions - competitive bid prices and extraordinarily low interest rates - to meet the formidable economic challenge in front of us.

Patty Hajdu Minister of Health Government of Canada February 27, 2021 Dear Minister Hajdu, We are members of an all-party caucus on emergency access to Trikafta, a game-changing therapy that can treat 90% of the cystic fibrosis population. We are writing to thank you for your commitment to fast- tracking access to Trikafta and to let you know that we are here to collaborate with you in this work. We know that an application for review of Trikafta was received by Health Canada on December 4th, 2020 and was formally accepted for review on December 23rd. We are also aware that the Canadian Agency for Drugs Technologies in Health (CADTH) body that evaluates the cost effectiveness of drugs is now reviewing Trikafta for age 12 plus for patients who have at least one F508del mutation. This indicates that Trikafta was granted an ‘aligned review,’ the fastest review route. The aligned review will streamline the review processes by the Patented Medicine Prices Review Board (PMPRB) to set the maximum amount for which the drug can be sold, and by Health Technology Assessment bodies (CADTH and INESSS) to undertake cost-effective analyses, which can delay the overall timeline to access to another 6 months or more. An aligned review will reduce the timelines of all of these bodies to between 8-12 months or sooner. But that is just one half of the Canadian drug approval system.

    PRESIDENT'S REPORT: May 24, 2016 GENERAL On May 12, 2016, the University of Manitoba received the largest gift in its history. Ernest and Evelyn Rady, through the Rady Family Foundation, committed $30 million to support the Faculty of Health Sciences, which will henceforth be known as the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. In addition, the College of Medicine has been renamed the Max Rady College of Medicine. The gift, which is part of the $500 million Front and Centre capital campaign, will generate about $1.6 million each year for student financial aid, research, and equipment and capital upgrades. The 136th Annual Spring Convocation for the conferring of Degrees and the awarding of Academic Honours will be held May 31 to June 2, 2016. As part of Convocation, honorary degrees will be conferred upon Bonnie Buhler, Andrew Coyne, Heather Reisman, Gerald Schwartz, Bryce Douglas and Susan Lewis. Degrees were conferred upon graduates of the Max Rady College of Medicine during its Convocation on May 12, 2016, at which Dr. Paul Henteleff was the honorary degree recipient. A national conference entitled “Pathways to Reconciliation” will take place in Winnipeg from June 15 to 18, 2016, offering an opportunity for reflection and dialogue one year after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission issued its seminal report. The conference will be hosted at The University of Winnipeg in partnership with the University of Manitoba and the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, and offer more than 30 workshops and panels with keynote speakers such as the Honourable Frank Iacobucci, former Supreme Court Justice; Cindy Blackstock, Executive Director, First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada; Stephen Kakfwi, former Premier of the Northwest Territories; and Chief Dr.

  • Panchen Lama Joint Letter
    Since 1995, several governments, including Canadian governments, have requested permission to visit the Panchen Lama in order to verify his safety and well-being. Similarly, efforts by human rights organizations including the UN Committee Against Torture, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, as well as Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, have been unsuccessful. Chinese authorities have consistently denied permission and access. Therefore we, the undersigned parliamentarians, ask that the Right Honourable Prime Minister: 1. Issue a statement calling on China to release Tibet’s 11th Panchen Lama Gedhun Choekyi Nyima and his entire family, and to stop the violation of the religious freedoms of all peoples under its jurisdiction, including Tibetan Buddhists, Uighur Muslims, Falun Gong practitioners and Christians; 2.
