All the authors presented drafts of their manuscripts at a conference on this topic, which took place on May 2 and 3, 2013 at the University of Oregon. Monism and Morphology at the Turn of the Twentieth Century SANDER GLIBOFF Indiana University Abstract. Ernst Haeckel’s monistic worldview and his interpretation of Darwin’s theory of evolution worked together to help him rule out any role for divine providence or any non-material mind, spirit, will, or purpose in the organic world. In his account of 1866, the impersonal, unpredictable, and purposeless external environment was what drove evolutionary change. By around the turn of the twentieth century, however, new theories of evolution, heredity, and embryology were challenging Haeckel’s, but Haeckel no longer responded with his earlier vigor. Younger monistically oriented evolutionary biologists had to take the lead in modernizing and defending the monistic interpretation and the external causes of evolution. Three of these younger biologists are discussed here: Haeckel’s student, the morphologist-turned-theoretician Richard Semon (1859–1918); Ludwig Plate (1862–1937), who took over Haeckel’s chair at the University of Jena and became an influential journal editor and commentator on new research on heredity and evolution; and Paul Kammerer (1880–1926), whose experimental evidence for the modifying power of the environment was hotly debated. Despite their very different social, political, and religious backgrounds, their contrasting research methods and career trajectories, and their disagreements on the precise mechanisms of evolution, these three were united by their adherence to Haeckelian monistic principles. -

Before proceeding with this argument, however, it is necessary to explain the methodology used. First, the methodology itself seeks to illustrate the close relationship between emergence and pragmatism by recognizing that the significance of inquiry lies not in “results,” which are always provisional, but rather in the vitality of the semiotic processes of which these results are emergent properties. Second, any claims that this paper makes to originality do not depend on its observation that Peirce’s pragmaticism results from his strong emergentist cosmology, a conclusion which is arguably self-evident, but on its analysis of this cosmology in terms of the historical context. -

FRANK MORTON CARPENTER (1902-1994): ACADEMIC BIOGRAPHY AND LIST OF PUBLICATIONS BY DAVID G. FURTH 18 Hamilton Rd., Arlington, MA 02174 The present paper is meant to accompany the preceding one by Elizabeth Brosius, Assistant Editor at the University of Kansas, Paleontological Institute, who was extremely instrumental in aid- ing Prof. Frank Carpenter to finish his Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology volumes on fossil insects. The Brosius paper is a brief profile taken from her personal interaction with Prof. Carpen- ter as well as numerous interviews about him with his friends, stu- dents, and colleagues. The present paper is intended to be more of an account of Prof. Carpenter's academic background and accom- plishments with the addition of some personal and academic accounts of the author's interaction with Frank Carpenter. Frank Morton Carpenter was born in Boston on 6 September 1902. When he was three years old his family (father Edwin A. and mother Maude Wall) moved from Boston to Revere and at age six his family moved to Melrose where he began to attend Lincoln School the following year. His father worked for the American Express Company but had a strong interest in natural history and taught his elder son (Edwin, four years older than Frank) about the constellations. Edwin later graduated from Harvard, studied astronomy, and became Director of the Astronomical Laboratory at the University of Arizona in Tucson. When Frank Carpenter was a sixth grader at Lincoln School his father encouraged his interest in butterflies and moths. In ninth grade Frank Carpenter began taking out books about insects from the Melrose Public Library. -

Chapter 1 History Systematics has its origins in two threads of biological science: classification and evolution. The organization of natural variation into sets, groups, and hierarchies traces its roots to Aristotle and evolution to Darwin. Put simply, systematization of nature can and has progressed in absence of causative theories relying on ideas of “plan of nature,” divine or otherwise. Evolutionists (Darwin, Wallace, and others) proposed a rationale for these patterns. This mixture is the foundation of modern systematics. Originally, systematics was natural history. Today we think of systematics as being a more inclusive term, encompassing field collection, empirical compar- ative biology, and theory. To begin with, however, taxonomy, now known as the process of naming species and higher taxa in a coherent, hypothesis-based, and regular way, and systematics were equivalent. A student of Plato at the Academy and reputed teacher of Alexander the Great, Aristotle founded the Lyceum in Athens, writing on a broad variety of topics including what we now call biology. To Aristotle, living things (species) came from nature as did other physical classes (e.g. gold or lead). Today, we refer to his classification of living things (Aristotle, 350 BCE) that show simi- larities with the sorts of classifications we create now. In short, there are three featuresCOPYRIGHTED of his methodology that weMATERIAL recognize immediately: it was functional, binary, and empirical. Aristotle’s classification divided animals (his work on plants is lost) using Ibn Rushd (Averroes) functional features as opposed to those of habitat or anatomical differences: “Of (1126–1198) land animals some are furnished with wings, such as birds and bees.” Although he recognized these features as different in aspect, they are identical in use. -

Schon zu seiner Schulzeit führt er Naturstudien in der Umgebung von Würzburg und bei Verwandten im Odenwald (Amorbach) durch. Er beschäftigt sich weiterführend mit Pflanzen, Tieren, Gesteinen, legte Sammlungen an, fertigte Zeichnungen und führte erste Tiersektionen durch.[2] Politische Hintergründe: Bayern wurde 1806 unter dem Minister Maximilian Carl Joseph Franz de Paula Hieronymus Graf von Montgelas (1759–1838) zu einem der führenden Mitglieder im Rheinbund und Bündnispartner von Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821). Für seine Bündnistreue wurde im Frieden von Pressburg Bayern zum Königreich durch den französischen Kaiser aufgewertet und Herzog Maximilian IV. (1756–1825) am 1. Januar 1806 in München als Maximilian I. Joseph zum ersten König Bayerns erhoben.
