The fish genera Gasterosteus, Hucho, Oxynoemacheilus, Salmo, and Schizothorax are examples of these groups among vertebrates, and the genera Magnibursatus (Trematoda), Margaritifera, Potomida, Microcondylaea, Leguminaia, Unio (Mollusca), and Phagocata (Planaria), among invertebrates. There is reason to believe that their ancestors spread to Europe through the Paratethys (or the proto-Paratethys basin that preceded it), where intense speciation took place and new genera of aquatic organisms arose. Canyon Diablo 395 The primary structure is as before. However, the kamacite has been briefly reheated above 600° C and has recrystallized throughout the sample. The new grains are unequilibrated, serrated and have hardnesses of 145-210. The previous Neumann bands are still plainly visible , and so are the old subboundaries because the original precipitates delineate their locations. The schreibersite and cohenite crystals are still monocrystalline, and there are no reaction rims around them. The troilite is micromelted , usually to a somewhat larger extent than is present in I-III. Severe shear zones, 100-200 J1 wide , cross the entire specimens. They are wavy, fan out, coalesce again , and may displace taenite, plessite and minerals several millimeters. The present exterior surfaces of the slugs and wedge-shaped masses have no doubt been produced in a similar fashion by shear-rupture and have later become corroded. Figure 469. Canyon Diablo (Copenhagen no. 18463). Shock The taenite rims and lamellae are dirty-brownish, with annealed stage VI . Typical matte structure, with some co henite crystals to the right. Etched. Scale bar 2 mm. low hardnesses, 160-200, due to annealing. In crossed Nicols the taenite displays an unusual sheen from many small crystals, each 5-10 J1 across. This kind of material is believed to represent shock annealed fragments of the impacting main body. Since the fragments have not had a very long flight through the atmosphere, well developed fusion crusts and heat-affected rim zones are not expected to be present. The energy responsible for bulk reheating of the small masses to about 600° C is believed to have come from the conversion of kinetic to heat energy during the impact and fragmentation. -

FRANK MORTON CARPENTER (1902-1994): ACADEMIC BIOGRAPHY AND LIST OF PUBLICATIONS BY DAVID G. FURTH 18 Hamilton Rd., Arlington, MA 02174 The present paper is meant to accompany the preceding one by Elizabeth Brosius, Assistant Editor at the University of Kansas, Paleontological Institute, who was extremely instrumental in aid- ing Prof. Frank Carpenter to finish his Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology volumes on fossil insects. The Brosius paper is a brief profile taken from her personal interaction with Prof. Carpen- ter as well as numerous interviews about him with his friends, stu- dents, and colleagues. The present paper is intended to be more of an account of Prof. Carpenter's academic background and accom- plishments with the addition of some personal and academic accounts of the author's interaction with Frank Carpenter. Frank Morton Carpenter was born in Boston on 6 September 1902. When he was three years old his family (father Edwin A. and mother Maude Wall) moved from Boston to Revere and at age six his family moved to Melrose where he began to attend Lincoln School the following year. His father worked for the American Express Company but had a strong interest in natural history and taught his elder son (Edwin, four years older than Frank) about the constellations. Edwin later graduated from Harvard, studied astronomy, and became Director of the Astronomical Laboratory at the University of Arizona in Tucson. When Frank Carpenter was a sixth grader at Lincoln School his father encouraged his interest in butterflies and moths. In ninth grade Frank Carpenter began taking out books about insects from the Melrose Public Library. -

They are known in the avian fauna of Europe from the Miocene, the beginning of the Neogene, and are currently represented by 11 species. Due to their size, they occur more frequently among fossilized material than other types of songbirds, and thus have been examined to the largest extent. In the current article, we present their known evolution and their fossilized taxa in Europe and examine the osteology of extant species. Kietzmann Recibido: 19 de marzo de 2021 Aceptado: 15 de junio de 2021 Disponible online: 15 de junio de 2021 ABSTRACT Petrographic and chemical (major, minor and trace element) studies of silicate inclusions and metal from the San Juan A and B samples revealed that they are new masses belonging to the Campo del Cielo IAB iron meteorite shower. These masses must have being transported from the large strewn field in the Chaco and Santiago del Estero Provinces to the surroundings of San Juan city, where they have being recover in the year 2000. The sizes of the two masses of San Juan, collected 770 km SW from Santiago del Estero, is in agreement with the previously suggested anthropic hypothesis for the transport of Campo del Cielo. It is quite reason- able that I should next apply it to William Steel Creighton, for he certainly ranks next to W. M. Wheeler among American myrmecologists. It will be quite different, however, because my actual associa- tion with Creighton was very brief twice a dinner guest in New York City and two visits in La Feria, Texas. Correspondence, however, is quite different. I received 45 letters from W. M. Wheeler between 1919 and 1936; the last was dated four months before his death. They dealt chietly with our pro- posed treatise on ant larvae; only two ran over to the second page. -
