playoff berth in the last eight seasons in 2009 P LA Y E RS The Washburn football team enters the 2009 season with 20 starters returning on both sides of the football setting the team up for a run back to the top of the MIAA and at an NCAA postseason berth. “We are coming off a great spring practice C O

This will make us a deeper team at each position.” OPPO NEN TS A Friday night home game will kickoff six home games on Sept. 4 as the Ichabods will play host to New Mexico Highlands. Keeping the streak alive The Ichabods wrapped up the 2008 season with a 6-5 overall record while completing the MIAA slate with a 4-5 mark and a sixth place finish in conference play keeping the winning R E V IE W season streak alive at five years. It has been more than 100 years since the Ichabod foot- ball program has rolled off five straight seasons of winning football. Since Craig Schurig took over the program prior to the 2002 season, the Ichabods have gone 46-35 with two NCAA T HE Playoff appearances and the 2005 MIAA title.

The Ichabods have not had five straight win- MIAA ning seasons since the 1903 to 1907 seasons. “We feel our program is to the point where we can continue to build on success from the previous seasons with outstanding veteran players and the influx of new talent,” Schurig R EC OR D said. “Winning creates winning and that is what our coaching staff and players have been

The Story Behind Mr. Ichabod T HE

The name “Ichabod” was derived from the first name of Ichabod Washburn, an MIAA early benefactor of the university. Ichabod Washburn was born in Kingston, Mass., on Aug. 11, 1798. In 1831, he began what was his life work - and the pride of Worchester,

Mass., - when he essayed the drawing of wire. He was co-founder of R EC OR D Washburn and Moen Manufacturing (later American Steel and Wire). His own lack of formal education made him acutely aware of its impor- tance. When approached by the residents of Topeka to help save the ailing B OO K Lincoln College, Ichabod Washburn responded with a $25,000 gift. In May, 1869, Lincoln College was renamed Washburn College in recognition of his outstanding contribution.
