To celebrate 150 years of Dmitri Mendeleev’s Periodic Table, Xinova is calling for its global network of innovators to share how significant the Periodic Table has been in their lives. Periodic Table CelebRaTiON

Xinova is seeking submissions from its global network of innovators that celebrate 150 years of Dmitri Mendeleev's Periodic Table. We want to hear your stories, and share in the memories that have turned each of you into the innovators that you are. Since this is meant to be fun, we have provided a set of questions we'd like each of you to respond to. Feel free to say a little or a lot, respond in poetry or in song. Your contribution is elemental, so don't be ionic. Share with us.

The periodic table is one of the most powerful representations of our knowledge of the physical and natural world. Acting as a centerpiece for the unifying language of scientific inquiry, it stands as one of the most important achievements in science; capturing the essence not only of , but also of and biology.

A Brief History: In 1669, a German merchant and amateur alchemist Hennig Brand attempted to create a Philosopher’s Stone, an object that supposedly could turn into pure gold. He heated residues from boiled urine, and as the vapor condensed it burst into flames. This became the first scientific discovery of an element, phosphorus. From there, new elements were discovered and patterns unearthed.

The first Periodic Table as we know it came from Mendeleev’s representation of known elements, and a prediction of elements yet to be discovered, but that’s not all that his initial predictions resulted in. Properties such as electromagnetism and radioactivity were Mendeleev’s periodic table as pub- lished in the journal of the Russian introduced, concepts such as the nucleus, electrons, orbitals, protons, Chemical Society (Dmitrii Mende- neutrons, isotopes, quarks were developed, and theories such as relativity and leev, "On the Relationship of the quantum mechanics were supposed. “Throughout its long history, the periodic table has been disputed, altered and improved as science has progressed and as new elements have been discovered. But despite the dramatic changes that have taken place in science over the past century—namely, the development of the theories of relativity and quantum mechanics—there has been no revolution in the basic of the periodic system.”
