It is a historical place where Emperor Menelik II resided and built his palace when he came from Ankober and founded Addis Ababa. It is considered a sacred mountain and has many monasteries. It is situated at an altitude of between 2,600 and 3,100 meters. You will have a magnificent view of the city. Then, you will drive to the National Museum. The museum houses the nation’s artistic treasures as well as many of the most precious archaeological finds such as the fossilized remains of early hominids, the most famous of which is “Lucy,” the partial skeleton of a specimen of Australopithecus afarensis. The well-known Lucy is said to be 3.2 million years old. After visiting the museum, you will drive to Trinity cathedral Church. This church is the highest ranking Orthodox cathedral in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It was built to commemorate Ethiopia’s liberation from Italian occupation and is the second most important place of worship in Ethiopia, after the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion in Axum. Lakes Abijata and Shala constitute a national park of the same name. Although only a 3 km strip of land separates them, the two lakes are quite different. Shala, the southern lake is enclosed in a 266 m deep crater while Abijata is a large shallow brackish lake no more than 14 m deep. Shala is mostly inaccessible, except for its eastern shores with steaming hot springs, hot enough for instant cooking. After your visit drive back to Addis. INTRODUCTION OF THE STUDY Amhara National Regional State (ANRS) located in the northern part of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia has the area of about 154 thousand sq. km. accounting for around 15% of the territory of the nation where about 17.9 million (or about 25% of the national population) are inhabited. In the ANRS, 6.3 million people are considered as food insecure. In particular, the eastern area of Amhara Region has been exposed to recurrent drought for past 3 decades, thus considered as the most suffering area from food shortage. Under such circumstances, the Federal Government of Ethiopia requested cooperation of Japan for “The Development Study on the Improvement of Livelihood through Integrated Watershed Management in Amhara Region”. Based on this request, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) dispatched a preparatory study team to Ethiopia in March 2007 and agreed the basic contents of Scope of Work (S/W) that were signed between the ANRS Government and JICA in the same month. Under such background, JICA dispatched a Study Team to the ANRS from March 2008 to conduct the Study as described in the S/W. The overall goal of the Study is to ensure food security of the vulnerable households in food insecure area of Amhara Region through implementation of integrated watershed management.

However, saving level in Ethiopia is very low and little is known empirically about its patterns and determinants. Therefore, this study attempts to identify and analyze the main determinants of household saving in Ethiopia giving special emphasis to North Gondar zone on three selected districts i.e. Gondar, Dembia and Dabat using survey data collected from 604 sample households in August 2013. The results of the descriptive analyses shows that 54.1% of sample households practiced saving and the common reasons for households not to save are low income, inflation, low interest rate, cultural background, education, social affairs and unemployment. The planning and expenditure controlling habit of most respondents was also found minimal. Besides, the economic analyses shows that income, age, sex, marital status, forms of institutions used for saving and frequency of getting money are significant determinants of household savings in the study area.

Special handling of dialects According to Leyew (2007), Amharic, natively Amarɨňňa,1 has five regional dialects, centered around the provinces of Gondar, Gojjam, Wollo (Wello, Wällo), Shewa (Shoa, Šewa) and Addis Ababa (Addis Abäba) respectively.2 With the exception of the dialect of Addis Ababa, all are spoken in the Amhara Region. The Addis Ababa dialect, which is spoken in Ethiopia’s federal capital, is widely accepted to represent the standard dialect (Hayward & Hayward, 1999). Amharic belongs to the Transversal sub-branch of South Ethiopian languages. It is closely related to the endangered Argobba language (with which it forms a group), which it is gradually displacing. The South Ethiopian languages are themselves an offshoot of the south Semitic subfamily of the Semitic language family, other members of which include Arabic and Hebrew, a main branch of the Afroasiatic language family. Amharic is the official national language of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) as well as the working language of several sub-federal administrative divisions. These include the Chartered Cities of Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa and four of Ethiopia’s nine federated regions (or ‘Regional States’): Amhara, Benshangul–Gumaz, Gambela, and Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR). Amharic is spoken natively by the Amhara people. According to the Ethiopian Central Statistical Agency Population and Housing Census Report — Country (2007), this represents some 20 million people (p. 73). Nonetheless, as the national language in a highly linguistically diverse nation, Amharic is spoken by many non-Amhara proficiently as a second language.
