Mourning the Soviet Union August 17, 2011 in Books by The China Beat | Permalink By Nicolai Volland Twenty years ago, on 23 August 1991, a grim- looking Boris Yeltsin shoved a sheet of paper in front of Mikhail Gorbachev with the words, “You read this now!” Gorbachev, who had just returned to Moscow after the abortive coup d’état led by KGB generals and hardliners in his own Party, appeared tense and insecure. In front of a stunned international TV audience (original footage here [at 01:25]), he did as he was told. Gorbachev’s decree was the first in a number of documents that led to the ban of the once mighty Communist Party of the Soviet Union. It had been Yeltsin’s bravado, climbing atop a tank at the Russian parliament building and calling on the Moscow population to resist the generals’ power grab, that had saved Gorbachev, the Soviet leader.

  • China Targets More Short Track Golds at Vancouver Olympics 10:53, January 27, 2008
China targets more short track golds at Vancouver Olympics 10:53, January 27, 2008 China would endeavor to claim more short-track golds at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, said the 40-year-old Li Yan, head coach of the short-track speed skating national team. Li made the remarks at the 11th National Winter Games held here from Jan. 18 to 28. China did not end its winter Olympic gold draught until the Salt Lake City Games in 2002 when Yang Yang (A) took women's 500 meters and 1,000 meters short track titles. Wang Meng won the women's 500 meters at the Turin Olympics and grew up to a leading figure in China's short track. Despite of the fact that China had advantages in women's short-distance events, Li pinned the medal hopes in more events. "Besides the women's 500 meters, we strive to make breakthroughs in the 1,000 meters and even 1,500 meters events," said Li. But Li kept a clear mind at China's short-track level. "There is a substantial gap between China and South Korea at the skills, vision and training. Except the short distance and relay events that China has certain advantages, the long distance events are dominated by the South Koreans," Li told Xinhua. Li believed the gap did not only exist in the national team force, but also in the reserve force. "We are lack of the reserve force. I cannot see the hopeful young players for the national team." "Besides South Korea, Chinese skaters still meet great challenge from Canada and the United States," said Li.

Ylva MONSCHEIN R Paradise Reloaded? Wang Meng’s Public Private Memories of Soviet Russia or the Art of Composing a Capriccio Abstract. WANG Meng 王蒙 (*LRNQ), one of the most prominent and prolific writ- ers of Chinese contemporary literature since the founding of the People’s Republic, is known for having a “strong Russian complex”. This paper examines his lifelong fascination with Russia and the Soviet sphere. In Sulian ji, semi-autobiographical encounters between fact and fiction have the potential of being a transferable indi- cator of the confrontations and entanglements of private memories and public his- tory, of personal fate and national destiny. Literature thus not only provides a key instrument in shaping one’s own identity, but turns out to become a catalyst in re- evoking the collective memory of a whole generation and its lost ideals, as addi- tional case studies of fellow writers may also show. By setting up a memorial to the Soviet Union and a greatly underestimated literary masterpiece, WANG Meng trans- forms Soviet Russia into a Chinese “realm of memory” in its own right. Keywords. THE CASE OF THE THREE PAINTINGS BY WANG MENG by HELEN WODEHOUSE GRIFFIN B.A., University of British Columbia, 1938 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in the Department of Fine Arts We accept this thesis as conforming to the required standard THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA April, 1968 In presenting this thesis in partial fulfilment of the requirements for an advanced degree at the University of British Columbia, I agree that the Library shall make it freely available for reference and study. I further agree that permission for extensive copying of this thesis for scholarly purposes may be granted by the Head of my Department or by his represen• tatives. It is understood that copying or publication of this thesis for financial gain shall not be allowed without my written permission. Department of Fine Arts The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada Date April 25, 1968 ABSTRACT The problem in this thesis is to find out which of three of (the Chinese fourteenth Century painter) Wang Meng's paintings in the Palace Collection in Taiwan, is the original or "least-corrupted" and which the copies. They are hanging scrolls, ink and slight colour on paper, approximately four feet by two feet titled Hua-ch'i yuVyin. The aim is to show that by using Western scientific art history analysis^some advance is possible; and the results may help in establishing pivot points, called here "prime objects", necessary for establishing a history of styles for Chinese painting. Materials used were photographs taken by the University of Michigan, Department of History of Art in 1965-6 in Taipei, Taiwan.

  • 2014 Winter Olympic Competing Nations ALBANIA (ALB)
2014 Winter Olympic Competing Nations We list below detailed historial Olympic information for every IOC Member Nation that has previously competed at the Olympic Winter Games and that will compete in Sochi, as of 27 January 2014. There appear to be 88 qualified NOCs that have met IF quota requirements as of 24 January, and have accepted them (the previous record for a Winter Olympics is 82 in 2010 at Vancouver). Unfortunately, after reallocation of some quotas, only the skiing federation (FIS) has published the final quotas as of 26 January. We have tried to list below the sports for which each NOC has qualified but there is a small chance, with reallocations, that there may be minor differences in the final allocation by sport. There are seven nations that will compete in Sochi that have never before competed at the Olympic Winter Games – Dominica, Malta, Paraguay, Timor-Leste (East Timor), Togo, Tonga, and Zimbabwe. Their factsheets have been published previously on olympstats.com – see http://olympstats.com/2014/01/23/new-winter-olympic-nations-for-sochi/, which came out on 23 January. One problem nation is listed below and that is DPR Korea (North). They have not qualified any athletes for Sochi. They had the 1st and 2nd reserves for pairs figure skating but those do not appear to have been chosen by final reallocation of quota sports by the International Skating Union (ISU). However, yesterday (26 January), DPR Korea has petitioned the IOC for redress to allow them to have Olympic athletes compete in Sochi. So they are included below but it is unknown if they will compete.
