SUMJURY FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY, 1917. With the exception of some places a.long the northern portion of Cook Strait and a few eoattered stations in the South Isla.nd, the total ra.infa.1l wa.s everywhere above the avera.ge, the greatest excess being in the northern and southernmost dlstriots. The two ohief ca.uses of excessive rains were both extra-troploal oyolones. One which ruled during the first few days of the month moved from the north-west down towa.rds the West Coa.st of the South Island, and passed In the South on the 5th. The other passed in the N ortbern dlstriots on the 21st, and was followed by a. " seoondary " oentre, whioh was eIJeotlve until the 25th. The latter distnrba.noe wa.s responsible for extremely hea.vy ra.in a.nd flooded rivers in the Northern and East Coa.st distriots of the North Island. Some of the northern stations reoorded over 5 in. on three oonseoutive days viz., 21st, 22nd, and 23rd. About the 16th a small antioyolone prevailed, and on the 21st and 22nd antloyolonio pressure ruled in and southwa.rds of Cook Stra.it; otherwise atmospherio pressure was generally below norma.l, and in oonsequenoe dull skies were the rule.
