ABSTRACT Conceiving Coexistence: an Exposition on the Divergent ABSTRACT Conceiving Coexistence: An Exposition on the Divergent Western and Islamic Conceptualizations of Tolerance Aaron M. Tyler, M.A. Mentor: Derek H. Davis, Ph.D. Is a “clash” between Western and Islamic civilizations underway? For some, Samuel Huntington’s prescient thesis is being realized. For others, his “clash of civilizations” paradigm only obfuscates with generalizations the complexities and confluences of world cultures. Cognizant of its potential deficiencies, this project utilizes a cultural comparative paradigm as an expressly limited systematic methodology for examining intercommunal, transcultural conflict and possible paths to reconciliation and coexistence. After demonstrating the reality of a multilevel conflict between Western and Islamic civilizations, the cross-cultural, interreligious conception of tolerance is proffered as one essential strategy for affecting a mutually desired level of peaceful coexistence. Tolerance is a strategic attitude for living with difference, and how this attitude is manifested largely depends on context, tradition, and the nature and extent of diversity. This dissertation provides a brief analysis of select writings and practices of tolerance in Western and Islamic histories to show how an intercultural understanding of tolerance is well within the philosophical, theological, and practical parameters of both traditions. Islamic and Western civilizations each have a unique hierarchy of values that have motivated conceptualizations of tolerance. Yet, despite their varying orders of supremacy, intercultural values of significant worth to both civilizations are apparent—liberty, justice, humility, human dignity, and charity, for example. In addition to the confluence of virtues that have quickened conceptualizations of tolerance, this project also examines how both traditions have found pragmatic, temporal stimulants for developing this important strategy. Beyond important virtues such as liberty or justice, the geopolitical desire to peaceably coexist has proven to be an equally important pragmatic incentive. This, of course, does not diminish virtue as a critical motivator for tolerance; it simply highlights the historical complexity of this pan cultural strategy for meaningful coexistence. Huntington’s Clash of Civilizations (1997), acclaimed by many policy makers and foreign affairs analysts in the West for its reasoned realism but also castigated by academics for its infidelity to liberalism and challenge to multiculturalism, attracted international attention for its assertion, following the end of Cold War rivalries, that Islam would emerge as the most potent and violent challenge to Western civilization.1 In a 1999 keynote address delivered at Colorado College, Huntington stated: “For the foreseeable future, the relations between the West and Islam will be at best distant and acrimonious and at worst conflictual and violent.”2 Following the attacks of 11 September 2001, many again harkened to Huntington’s prescient thesis. The September 2001 al-Qaeda attacks, described by most world leaders as senseless and cowardly acts of violence, inaugurated what has become a global war on terrorism. While careful to emphasize that Islam is a peaceful religion and that most Muslims are peaceable, law-abiding citizens, Western leaders and citizens are cognizant of how the recent rise in terrorism is a product of Muslim extremism. 1Huntington’s hypothesis was first articulated in a 1993 Foreign Affairs article, entitled, "The Clash of Civilizations?” The hypothesis was expounded at book-length in 1997. With the new “enemy” identified, attempts to excise Islam’s radical elements, whether through banal discrimination upon Muslim immigrants in the dar al- harb (“abode of war”; non-Islamic regions of the world) or military, economic, and diplomatic pressure against the dar al-Islam (“abode of peace”; regions under Islamic law) , are now underway. Such violent ultimatums are more commonly associated with religious fundamentalists than with vintners, but this statement came from a group of seven militant vintners wearing ski-masks and demonstrates the dire situation the European wine sector is facing.2 This group, called the Crav, has already vandalized local supermarkets and hijacked and destroyed a truck carrying foreign wine.3 The problem facing these and other vintners throughout Europe is that European wines are losing their competitive edge to new world wines resulting in a crippling loss in demand.4 This loss in demand is exacerbated by a record-setting wine over-production of almost 12.8 million hectoliters, or 743.6 million gallons, per year, resulting in an inconsumable wine surplus.5 Both of these factors have driven the price of wine through the floor, resulting * J.D. It is the same with written words; they seem to talk to you as though they were intelligent, but if you ask them anything about what they say, from a desire to be instructed, they go on telling you just the same thing forever. Plato, Collected Dialogues Ramon Llull (1232-1316) was a vernacular author who shaped the literary, cultural, and religious landscape of medieval Iberia, however his literary works in Catalan are often times excluded from discussions of medieval reading and writing practices. This essay will examine how Llull’s vernacular writings contribute to the evolving definition of translatio studii et imperii, or the transference of knowledge and power, providing insight into how medieval knowledge and power were formed, shared, and promoted. I will critically assess the thresholds of the persistence of traditions that imply that translatio was unilateral or one-dimensional. Specifically, Llull’s Arbre de filosofia d’amor (1298) provides necessary insight into how he developed his own theories of reading and writing practices, and shows why Llull remained a vital influence on the literary and cultural production of medieval Iberia.

Most of the Shari’ah is up to individual Muslims to follow in their own lives. Some are for judges to implement in courts. Finally, the third set of laws is for the ruler or political authority to implement based on the best interests of society. The Shari’ah ruling on Muslims who decide to leave Islam belongs to this third group. Implemented in the past to protect the integrity of the Muslim community, today this important goal can best be reached by Muslim governments using their right to set punishments for apostasy aside. One of the most common accusations leveled against Islam involves the freedom of religion. The problem, according to critics: Islam doesn’t have any. This criticism might strike some as odd since it has been well established that both the religion of Islam and Islamic civilization have shown a level of religious tolerance that would make modern Americans blush.

These topics have been widely discussed in relation to his art. Scholars also frequently examine the relationship between Tàpies’s work and Eastern thought as a major theme throughout his career. While several commentators have noted the influence of Western medieval mystic Ramon Llull (c. 1232 - c. 1315) on Tàpies’s art, this topic has not been given sustained critical attention. This thesis paper argues that the relationship between Tàpies and Llull is not merely stylistic. A close examination of Tàpies’s writings reveals a deeper metaphysical connection between Tàpies’s methodology as an artist and Llull’s methodology as a theologian. I argue that Tàpies employs Llull’s metaphysical model of the “Art of Combination” in his artwork to produce a deeper meaning for the viewer. I demonstrate this claim by an appeal to Tàpies’s writings as well as a formal analysis of his paintings and prints. Finally, I argue that Tàpies’s use of Llull’s Art of Combination can be situated in Tàpies’s wider system of a secular religion, where art has replaced the social function that religion once filled.

The author will argue in this Article that it is indeed possible to reconcile Islam with a commitment in favor of democracy. The author will then present a systematic exploration of Islamic theology and law as it relates to a democratic system of government, and in this context, address the various elements within Islamic belief and practice that promote, challenge, or hinder the emergence of an ideological commitment in favor of democracy. In many ways, the basic and fundamental ob- jective of this Article is to investigate whether the Islamic faith is consistent or reconcilable with a democratic faith. As addressed below, both Islam and democracy represent a set of comprehensive and normative moral commitments and beliefs about, among other things, the worth and entitle- ments of human beings. The challenging issue is to understand the ways in which the Islamic and democratic systems of convictions and moral commitments could undermine, negate, or validate and support each other.
