SPRING FLING | 2018 Thank you from the Director of Athletics In looking forward to completing my fourth year as the Director of Athletics, I am truly amazed at the strength and resiliance of our student-athletes and this university as a whole. Their determination inspires and drives me to continue to advance Panther Athletics in a positive direction this upcoming year. We have provided, and will continue to provide, a positive and successful experience for our student-athletes, graduating our student-athletes, preparing them to be successful and providing opportunities to compete for championships in their respective sports. I would personally like to thank everyone for attending this evening’s fundraiser. Your support of EIU and specifically our student-athletes is something we all value very much. We continue to strive to create the best experiences for all of our sport programs and the 450 student-athletes who work hard every day in the classroom and in competition. Your generosity tonight and throughout the year, continues to allow them to be successful in every way. Our sport programs have achievements in all they do. Fifteen teams achieved over a 3.00 gpa in the fall 2017. 68% of our student-athletes have a GPA of 3.00 or above. EIU lead the Ohio Valley Conference with 33 Medal of Honor awards and had the most selections to the Commissioner’s Honor roll (136 student-athletes). Football earned the team academic achievement award during the 2016-17 academic year. This award is given annually to the member institution’s team with the greatest percentage of its eligible student-athletes who achieved a 3.25 grade point average or higher. This event is not possible without the incredible support from the Panther community. The businesses and individuals who have contributed the many auction items here this evening, all with the idea of making Panther Athletics better and stronger is very much appreciated. I have been so impressed with the many, many individuals who make up our Spring Fling committee. Their commitment and dedication help make this benefit auction successful every year. The case is Smelt v. U.S., one that has been brewing since 2004 and which gay legal activists openly criticized as premature and ill-conceived at the time. That criticism has not changed with the lawsuit’s new incarnation, filed last Decem- ber. What has changed is the president, his ap- pointees to the Department of Justice, and the Chaz expectation on the part of many in the LGBT To Become community that the Obama administration page 18 would mount only a perfunctory defense of a Man DOMA, given that President Obama has vowed to work to repeal the statute.
