Dear Members, Colleagues, and Friends,

a warm welcome the EuroSpine 2010. EuroSpine, the Spine Society of Eu- rope, was founded in 1998 as a union of the European Spine Society and the European Spinal Deformity Society during their Meeting in Innsbruck, Austria. In 2010, the EuroSpine Annual Meeting is back in Austria, this time in its capital, Vienna.

Vienna is located in the Eastern part of Austria, close to the Czech Republic, Michael Ogon Josef G. Grohs Slovakia, and Hungary. It is by far the largest city in Austria with a population of about 1.7 million within the city and about 2.3 million in the metropolitan area.

It is the country’s cultural, economic, and political centre. At the same time it is a very safe, clean and green city. In 2005, an Economist Intelligence Unit study of 127 world cities ranked it first place equal with Vancouver for the quality of life.

Vienna offers a wide variety of exciting things to experience – from old historic buildings, classic concerts, the Opera and other cultural highlights to modern museums and pop concerts. Walk in the footsteps of the Habsburgs, visit the splendid baroque Schönbrunn Palace or stroll along the magnificent Ring Boulevard and take a look at the Imperial Palace.

Vienna has a long tradition as a major conference site and has gained an outstanding reputation as conference city. It ranks among the top congress destinations of the world, providing all the infrastructure and professionalism required to successfully organise premium scientific events. The EuroSpine Meeting will take place at the Reed Messe Wien Exhibition & Congress Center near the Prater, only a few minutes by public transportation from the historic city centre. The Reed Messe Wien Exhibition & Congress Center is a new and modern building, which offers a perfect auditorium for our scientific programme, as well as plenty of well organised space for our industrial partners to present their concepts and products.

Following a comprehensive discussion within the society and a survey within its members and partners, the EuroSpine 2010 will for the first time be a full 3-day meeting, Wednesday to Friday. Thursday after- noon will no longer be free as in the past, but will offer a full scientific programme. Thus, the Meeting will end on Friday evening. A pre-meeting will be organised with a special programme on Tuesday.

We are certain that this will be a memorable and enjoyable meeting. We look forward to your participa- tion at the Eurospine 2010 in Vienna.

Josef G. Grohs Michael Ogon

1 EUROSPINE 2010 Welcome Message ...from the President of EuroSpine

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The Spine Society of Europe is an international multi-disciplinary organisa- tion, where people from all different disciplines share their knowledge with the aim to improve the treatment of spinal disorders or even to prevent them. Our annual meeting is the most important European platform where ortho- paedic, trauma and neurosurgeons, but also conservative treating physi- cians, together with basic scientists such as engineers and biologists, come together to share the latest findings from their research.

The 2010 meeting will be held in Vienna, organised by our two local hosts Michael Ogon and Josef G. Grohs. Vienna is always worth a visit and I am sure that in this atmosphere, we will enjoy a challenging and stimulating scientific programme, and that we will also have wonderful opportunities for socialising to meet old and make new friends.

We would like to encourage all of you to submit your work for the 2010 EuroSpine meeting. All accepted abstracts will be published in the European Spine Journal, the official journal of our Soci- ety, which is becoming more prestigious from year to year. In the last year, its impact factor has again significantly increased from 2.021 to 2.396 now. It already has been the number one musculoskeletal journal in Europe and is now ranked 8th among orthopaedic journals worldwide.

Our society is heading towards exciting new times. With the new Eurospine Foundation we plan to foster research, teaching and promotion of evidence-based practice in the field of spine in Europe. We will also emphasise a closer relationship between the Spine Society of Europe and the national spine societies.

On behalf of the local hosts and the Society, I look forward to welcoming you to the 13th Annual Meet- ing in Vienna from September 15 – 17, 2010. I also want to welcome you, if you are not yet, to become a member of EuroSpine, the Spine Society of Europe.
