N “Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.” I’ve been to a lot of meetings in my years of work in the Church, and you can take my word for it: the ones with snacks just seem to go better. I don’t know what it is exactly. Maybe it’s just that people are in a more agreeable mood if you show up with donuts. Or maybe it’s about the very real sense of community and camaraderie that is created at a table where people are engaging in that most human of tasks N eating N beside one another. I think a big part of it comes down to the simple fact that we’re all just nicer people when we’re fed. This rings true spiritually, too. We simply must remain fed if we, in turn, are to feed others. Think of a time when you have neglected your relationship with God N when you haven’t fed yourself with whatever it is that you need to remain committed to the journey of a Christian life. Is it Mass attendance? Is it prayer or Scripture reading? Is it time with your small group, or conversation with a trusted friend who knows your soul? What sustains your ability to be a good disciple, a good steward? What inspires you to give more freely, to love more abundantly? Whatever it is, that’s your hearth cake. That’s your jug of water. Don’t neglect it.     Carmelite echoes in the Lourdes Grotto Johan Bergström-Allen, T.O.C. Johan is a Lay Carmelite and convenor of Carmelite Spirituality Groups in the northern English cities of Leeds and York where he runs the Projects and Publications Office of the British Province of Carmelites. As well as being involved in the Third Order formation programme of his province, Johan is a formator for volunteers working in Lourdes. He is the director of the British Province’s annual pilgrimage to Lourdes with the Catholic Association. For details of the pilgrimage please visit www.carmelite.org. This article was first published in Carmel in the World magazine in 2009. When the editor of Carmel in the World asked me to write an article about the link between Carmelite spirituality and Lourdes, the famous shrine of Our Lady in south-western France, I was very happy to do so because it’s a tremendously important place in my life. I’ve been lucky enough to have gone there on pilgrimage many times, including several visits in the Jubilee Year th of 2008 which marks the 150 anniversary of Mary’s apparitions to Saint Bernadette Soubirous. We follow the Rule of Saint Albert, and first came to Britain in 1242. As the hermits became friars following the 1247 General Chapter in Aylesford, Kent, and later in 1452 when nuns and lay people were formally admitted to the Order, the Carmelites developed their distinctive way of living in allegiance to Jesus Christ through prayer, community- life and service.
