It’s been nice to have the time to get back into the swing of things and rest players we needed to rest following a busy start to the season. Fortunately, we only spent three days in self quarantine after flying home from our Round 3 clash in Brisbane and I was really impressed with the way the playing group responded to the prospect of 14 days in isolation. Their work ethic was great and they made sure to keep connected as a team. In the days that followed, we have been able to focus on our home clash against Perth Glory. Perth had a hard time in the pre-season with the state’s COVID-19 restrictions but have now had two tough games, in hot conditions, against the in-form Adelaide side. I anticipate Perth will make it hard for us and we need to be prepared, with players such as Caitlin Doeglas and Hana Lowry, who can punish us if we’re not good defensively. We’re determined to keep our winning record at Viking Park and with the surround sound of the fans acting as our 12th player, they’ll be entering tough territory. -

Ashleigh Sykes Football Ashleigh Is a Champion Player for Canberra United and Portland
Ashleigh Sykes Football Ashleigh is a champion player for Canberra United and Portland. She also gives a lot of time to the community. Her versatility as a player, her speed onto the ball, her determination and skills but above all her leadership and positive role modeling for young women in Canberra. She is in an inspiration both on and off the field, who works hard for both her on and off field successes. Ashleigh is the silent achiever sets up most of the goals if not scoring herself for Canberra United. Always a good sport and a wonderful ambassador for women's sport. An inspiring co-captain as well as tenacious player for Canberra United, voted Players Player and Supporter's Player for 2016/2017. Played in the USNSWL final winning team. A brilliant, yet humble, role model. Brittany Tully AFLW Britt has had a stellar year, playing in the AFLW, taking out the CanberraAFL best & fairest and leading her team to a grand final. Humble, incredibly gifted, going places! I've played sport with Brittany locally and nationally since we were 5 years old. Her natural talent, perseverance and hard work over so many years are unmatched. Watching Britt play in the midfield for GWS for the inaugural AFL women's competition was a testament to her character and perseverance. I can't think of a more deserving and humble recipient for this award. Not only is Britt talented but she strives to be her best in every facet of life. She is kind hearted modest and the nicest person you will ever meet. -

Sally James, Jessika Nash and Paige Satchell will be making their Westfield W-League debut, while Demi Koulizakis and Isabella Foletta will be running out for Canberra United for the first time. Local youngster Emma Ilijoski could also make her league debut if she gets time off the bench. Supporting these players will be a number of impressive returning players including Nicki Flannery and leadership group Kendall Fletcher, Michelle Heyman and Grace Maher. I’m looking forward to watching them use their wealth of experience to help steer the ship. We are so excited to be playing our first game of the season at our new home ground of Viking Park, and I can’t wait to see it become a ground feared by away teams. I have heard so much about the passion and loyalty of our Canberra United fans and look forward to seeing them have just as much impact in Wanniassa, becoming the 12th player when times get tough. My message to the team as we prepare for the season opener is to have faith in the work we’ve done. -
