Sally James, Jessika Nash and Paige Satchell will be making their Westfield W-League debut, while Demi Koulizakis and Isabella Foletta will be running out for Canberra United for the first time. Local youngster Emma Ilijoski could also make her league debut if she gets time off the bench. Supporting these players will be a number of impressive returning players including Nicki Flannery and leadership group Kendall Fletcher, Michelle Heyman and Grace Maher. I’m looking forward to watching them use their wealth of experience to help steer the ship. We are so excited to be playing our first game of the season at our new home ground of Viking Park, and I can’t wait to see it become a ground feared by away teams. I have heard so much about the passion and loyalty of our Canberra United fans and look forward to seeing them have just as much impact in Wanniassa, becoming the 12th player when times get tough. My message to the team as we prepare for the season opener is to have faith in the work we’ve done. The players have worked extremely hard this pre-season and have gelled seamlessly as a team. But we are also aware that this just the beginning. Every week we will reflect, learn and grow to become the best team we can, this Westfield W-League season. 4 Performance Matters Canberra's sports specialist travel company, and proud Corporate Sports Team Official Travel Partner Travel Events Touring to Canberra United. I grew up in Rotorua in New Zealand, it’s a pretty small place but it’s home so I like it. I lived there for majority of my life and then when I was 17, I moved to Auckland to pursue my football further. SIBLINGS? I have quite a big family! I have one full sister, so she’s quite close in age to me and then I have two half-brothers and a half-sister who are quite a bit older. One’s actually living in Australia as well, she lives in Perth so hopefully we get to go over there at some point so I get to see her. WHEN DID YOU START PLAYING FOOTBALL? I started playing when I was five, so it’s been a while. MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT ON THE FIELD? I would say the most special moment was probably either debuting for the Football Ferns or playing in the World Cup. Last year I got to debut at the FIFA Women’s World Cup and it was in the Netherlands so that was also a pretty special moment for me. WHO WAS YOUR IDOL GROWING UP? It sounds pretty cheesy but a lot of girls who were in the Football Ferns. Growing up we had national talent camps and the girls would often come down for training and speak to us so a lot of those girls I did aspire to be like. Now I’m playing alongside them so it’s pretty surreal. 6 ANY GAME DAY RITUALS? I don’t specifically have any, but I would say a big one for me is just to have good music playing in the car on the way to the game and also in the changing rooms. Anything upbeat just to get me in the zone. FAVOURITE FOOD? I have a really big sweet tooth so I definitely like chocolate a lot but in terms of a meal I would say burgers are my favourite. WHAT ARE YOU BINGE WATCHING? I’m really into Vampire Diaries at the moment, I’ve been watching it for quite a while, I’m on the last season at the moment. HOW DO YOU FIND CANBERRA UNITED’S NEW HOME AT VIKING PARK? I really like it, the field is immaculate and the grass is so nice. Hopefully we get a good amount of spectators coming down to support us as well. That’s super important having the atmosphere and fans there. I think it’s going to be a great game. HOW ARE YOU FEELING AHEAD OF YOUR FIRST GAME WITH CANBERRA UNITED AND IN THE WESTFIELD W-LEAGUE? I’m really excited, the girls have been working really hard day in, day out, leading up to this first game. I think we’re all feeling really prepared and really excited I think just to show what we can do on the field. We’ve been putting in the hard yards so I’m hoping we can put on a quality performance and get a result! 7 - W E A R E O N Y O U R - TEAM CLASSIC CLASH V November 30 2017 Canberra United 4 def. Adelaide United 0 @ McKellar Park, Canberra Canberra United continued to press its claims for back-to-back Westfield W-League championships, cruising to a 4-0 victory against Adelaide United in the 2017/18 season. A double to Matildas striker Michelle Heyman, a maiden goal from Jenna McCormick and Veronica Perez’s successful penalty in injury time guided Canberra to a fourth straight win. While the unbeaten Melbourne City remained the benchmark in the competition with a perfect seven from seven, second-placed Canberra was building the momentum required for a run into the finals. The hosts took the lead in the ninth minute with a quicksilver counter-attack off an Adelaide free-kick. Lydia Williams gathered the ball and her throw to McCormick started the move. McCormick linked with Heyman who, in turn, released Ashleigh Sykes into space. Sykes’ first-time cross found Perez free and the Mexican international’s shot was spilled by Kaitlyn Savage into the path of Heyman who stabbed home from close range. Sykes’ pace was causing numerous problems for the Lady Reds’ defence and from another perfect delivery Canberra increased their lead in the 15th minute. McCormick was the beneficiary of the pass, miscuing her initial effort which was blocked on the line, but when the rebound fell kindly to the former Adelaide United Player of the Year she had an easy task to tap in her maiden Westfield W-League goal. 9 Canberra’s back four of Ellie Brush, Nicole Begg, Rebecca Kiting and Emma Checker received great support from midfielder Kendall Fletcher, while Matildas goalkeeper Lydia Williams had another superb performance in front of national team coach Alen Stajcic. The second half was a far more prosaic affair with Canberra unable to find the rhythm that had impressed before the break whilst Adelaide could find no way back into the match with Williams largely untested. As such the match meandered along at a fairly pedestrian pace until just after the hour. Perez had a great chance to make it three in the 63rd minute but, after engineering space for herself on the edge of the box, struck a shot that lacked the requisite venom to trouble Savage. Canberra introduced Kiwi international Emma Kete into the fray with 25 minutes remaining, the first action for the New Zealander since her appearance at McKellar Park in Round 2, in an effort to find more cohesion in the final third but the Lady Reds had tightened up defensively and Canberra found chances harder to come by. United finally added a third with six minutes to play as Heyman bagged her second. Substitute Julia De Angelis created it with a slide-rule pass into the Matildas striker. There was still plenty to do for Canberra’s all-time leading scorer, but she delightfully flicked the ball around the covering defender before cracking a right foot shot in off the base of the far post for her 54th career Westfield W-League goal. There was still time for one more as the home team was awarded a penalty in the 93rd minute. Perez did the business from the spot to round off the result.
