    HARDMEAD AND ITS DESERTED VILLAGE PAUL S. H. SMITH The results of a survey and watching brief at the deserted medieval village of Hardmead are evaluated in the context of additional archaeological and historical evidence assembled during a subsequent parish survey. There are indications that Roman land use may have influenced later colonization patterns, which did not peak until the thirteenth century.
