  • Setting Guitar Intonation Using Your Peterson Tuner
Setting Guitar Intonation Using Your Peterson Tuner Before you attempt to tune any stringed instrument, the intonation should be checked and, if necessary, adjusted to the correct position. If you’ve never used a Peterson tuner before, then it is almost certain that your instrument is not yet correctly intonated and will not sound its best until you address it. Now that you have a Peterson, you can achieve professional quality results with the help of the tips below, and the intonation will be the best it can be on your instrument. You’ll need your Peterson tuner, a short guitar cord, a small screwdriver and a set of new strings. Before starting, find a surface upon which to lay your guitar that is free of any objects which could damage your instrument and cover it with a towel or similar soft material. Remember to tune the guitar in the position in which you would normally play it (i.e. around your neck, supported by a strap), but adjust the bridge of the guitar after laying it on a flat surface. If you tune the guitar while it’s laying flat, gravity will affect the tension of the neck and skew the results. If you adjust the bridge while the guitar is hanging from a strap on your shoulder, there is a risk that the guitar’s finish will be damaged by the screwdriver. If possible, take the opportunity to clean the fingerboard after the old strings have been removed. New strings will stay clean and sound good a lot longer if the fingerboard is free of grime and dirt.

  • In Past Decades, Classic American Acoustic Guitars Like Gibsons, Martins and Guilds Were in Much Shorter Supply Here in the UK
In past decades, classic American acoustic guitars like Gibsons, Martins and Guilds were in much shorter supply here in the UK. Despite this, our native luthiers have still seemed reluctant to be seen as copyists – unlike the Japanese. Instead, British lutherie has become associated with baroque-looking instruments and a parochial, home- grown folky image. The problem with this situation is the fact that it’s futile denying that many of the most successful and attractive flat-top steel-string acoustic designs were perfected long ago across the Atlantic. UK builder Alister Atkin appreciates this; and, as a contemporary luthier, he’s been more directly inspired by the ‘new wave’ of small-scale US makers like Collings and Santa Cruz. He too aspires to create meticulously crafted recreations and reinterpretations of archetypal Marin and Gibson acoustic models. We reviewed our first Atkin model about four years ago; and around 150 guitars later his small workshop near Canterbury is doing great business supplying rock, roots and folk players alike with a selection of unpretentious models in the ‘classic American’ vein. This J-45 unashamedly references its Gibson namesake, but like Collings Santa Cruz, Atkin does not produce slavish copies; however, he is faithful to what he believes are the finest and most unique qualities of the best Gibson round-shouldered jumbos. This particular review model is not the most basic J-45 that can be ordered, but is ‘standard’ in all fundamentals. Inside we find a clean and tidy environment with precise joinery. The smoothly finished soundboard braces are scalloped and laid out in a traditional ‘X’ pattern.

LEGENDARY GUITARS & MUSICAL TREASURES DECEMBER 2, 2017 Legendary Guitars & Musical Treasures - Dec 2 1: Les Paul electric guitar signed to Bruce Springsteen USD 5,000 - 7,000 An Epiphone electric guitar signed to Bruce Springsteen, from Les Paul. Serial #9400536. Les respected Bruce and thought he was a "cool dude." The consigner of this item, who worked for Les Paul, had given Bruce an acoustic guitar Les had signed in the 1990s. When Les heard he was on tour a few years later, he signed this guitar to Bruce. Lester William Polsfuss was an inventor and musician. A talented musician as well as inventor, Les Paul is credited with various recording innovations and his skilled guitar playing, however he is probably best known for helping to design the Gibson Les Paul. The consigner of this item worked directly with Les Paul. 2: 1963 Jan & Dean Master Tapes USD 3,000 - 5,000 Two master tracks from the album "Jan & Dean Take Linda Surfin'". Recorded on February 20th, 1963. Track list: "Rhythm of the Rain" and "Mr. Bass Man." Arranged and produced by Jan Berry and supervised by Lou Adler, "Jan & Dean Take Linda Surfin'" is the duo's first Liberty album, and included the usual backup of high quality musicians, giving Jan & Dean ample opportunity for vocal acrobatics and comic antics in "Mr. Bass Man," while their rendition of "Rhythm of the Rain" has a low-key charm that wasn't usually associated with the duo.Jan & Dean were an American rock duo made up of Jan Berry and Dean Torrence.
