WARRIORS: OUR HOMELESS WORLD CUP

Monday, July BBC One Wales, 10.35pm

In this final episode of Warriors: Our Homeless World Cup, it’s the opening day of the Homeless World Cup 2018 in Mexico City. The Welsh squad – the Warriors – have arrived and are determined to make an impression. Over the following days, 500 players from 40 countries will battle it out on the pitch.

The tournament will be watched by 80,000 spectators and millions more online, and the Warriors have drawn the mighty Brazil in their first game. For a team who’ve only trained for 12 weeks, it’s an intimidating start.

Every player for the Warriors has been homeless at some point. But Rhiannon has seen the very worst of it. She grew up in Swansea and began sleeping rough at 13. She became an addict after her father passed away and spent 10 years on the street. She’s determined to move on from her past, but forgetting won’t be easy.

Things go from bad to worse for the team in Mexico as they take some punishing defeats and coach Keri has to be brutally honest with them. Can they pull it out of the bag for the final games?

The Warriors will soon be back to their own lives. Keri prepares them for the realities of leaving Mexico, the tournament and the routine of training. Having come such a long way together, united by a common bond, in search of better lives, it’s going to be hard for them to leave the team. But they’ll be taking something much more valuable back with them than any cup trophy can deliver.
