Yulianna Avdeeva Piano Yulianna Avdeeva rose to fame when she won First Prize in the Chopin Competition in 2010. She has since embarked on a world-class career and her artistic integrity is rapidly ensuring her a place among the most distinctive artists of her generation. A regular performer throughout Asia, in autumn 2014 Avdeeva undertakes an extensive tour of Japan, featuring concerto performances with the NHK Symphony and Osaka Philharmonic orchestras. This is followed by a major recital tour and the Toshiba Grand Concert Tour with Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse/Tugan Sokhiev. She also appears with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin/Marek Janowski, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra/Manfred Honeck and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra/Kirill Karabits. Recent orchestral highlights have included performances with Finnish Radio Symphony, London Philharmonic and Pittsburgh Symphony orchestras and the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. She also toured Spain and Italy with the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio and Vladimir Fedoseyev and undertook an acclaimed tour of the USA with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra under Antoni Wit. Yulianna Avdeeva's Chopin performances have drawn particular praise, marking her out as one of the composer's foremost interpreters. She is known for performing on period instruments, having played Chopin’s Piano Concertos on an Erard piano at the Festival ‘Chopin and his Europe’ with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century conducted by the late Frans Brüggen. With the latter ensemble she released a recording of these concertos on the Fryderyk Chopin Institute label to great critical acclaim. Her long association with the Institute has won her a huge following in Poland. Avdeeva’s most recent recital recording featuring works by Chopin, Schubert and Prokofiev was released on Mirare in August 2014. In recital, Avdeeva has performed at London’s International Piano Series, Rheingau Musik Festival, Barcelona’s Palau de la Música Catalana, Liederhalle Stuttgart, Philharmonie Essen, Salle Gaveau Paris, Schwetzinger Festspiele and La Roque d'Anthéron Festival. An active and committed chamber musician, she has worked with members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and members of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, with whom she collaborated at the Muziekgebouw Frits Philips Eindhoven in December 2012. This season, an extensive recital tour with violinist Julia Fischer takes her to the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées Paris, Grand Théâtre de Provence, Auditorium de Lyon, the Menuhin Festival Gstaad and the Bratislava Music Festival, amongst others. Yulianna Avdeeva began her piano studies at the age of five with Elena Ivanova at Moscow’s Gnessin Special School of Music and later studied with Konstantin Scherbakov and with Vladimir Tropp. At the International Piano Academy Lake Como, she was taught among others by William Grant Naboré, Dmitri Bashkirov and Fou Ts’ong. In addition to her Chopin prize, she has won several other prizes including the Bremen Piano Contest in 2003, the Concours de Genève 2006 and the Arthur Rubinstein Competition in Poland. 2014/15 season only. We will also celebrate the greatest Polish ‘Chopinist’ (interpreter of Chopin’s works) of the 20th century, Arthur Rubinstein, who was born in Lodz in 1887 and died in Switzerland in 1982, and whose portrait can be seen in the Polish Museum’s Gallery of Distinguished Poles. A week before (17th October 2009) – on the 160th anniversary of Chopin’s death – the foundation is organising “Chopin Day in Lodz”, consisting of a mass, concert and exhibition held in Lodz Cathedral. April 2018 The 2018 Guide Festivals FEATURE ARTICLE 10 Questions, Two (Very Different) Festivals Editor’s Note Our fifth annual Guide to Summer Festivals is our biggest yet, with some 85 annotated entries, plus our usual free access to the 1400 listings in the Musical America database. The details for the 85—dates, locations, artistic directors, programming, guest artists, etc.—have been provided by the festivals themselves, in response to a questionnaire sent to our list of Editor’s Picks. Those are determined by a number of factors: it’s hardly a surprise to see the big-budget events, such as Salzburg, Tanglewood, and Aspen, included. But budget is by no means the sole criterion. The 2018 Guide Programming, performers, range and type of events offered—all of these factor into the equation. For our feature article, we chose two highly regarded events and asked them one set of questions, just for the purposes of compare and contrast. Since George Loomis traveled to Ravenna last summer and knows Ojai well, we decided he was the perfect candidate to get the answers. Our hunch that the two couldn’t be more different turned out to be quite accurate: one takes place over a weekend, the over a two-month period; one is in the U.S., the other in Europe; one is rural, the other urban; one’s in a valley, the other by the sea; one focuses on contemporary fare, the other on traditional; one houses its artists in homes, the other in hotels; one is overseen by a man, the other by Festivals a woman; Ojai’s venues are primarily outdoor and strictly 20th century, Ravenna’s are mostly indoor and date as far back as the sixth century.

Searching for Chopin
SEARCHING FOR CHOPIN Written and photographed by Marcus Siu and Lidia Thompson exclusively for PoloniaSF.org The famous Chopin autograph sign hanging above the stage at the National Philharmonic, home of the Warsaw Philharmonic, and venue for the 16th Annual International Chopin Piano Competition. My sheer appreciation of classical piano music didn’t quite develop until early on during my adult years. It probably didn’t help when I was forced into taking piano lessons at the innocent age of twelve, fiendishly schemed and executed perfectly by my mother, despite my repetitive refusals to comply. The real reason, of course, was that I feared that my pre-teen image would be greatly tarnished by the younger kids of the neighborhood. I couldn’t let that happen. At that time of my life, I was much more interested in rock music. The Rolling Stones was my idea of what classical music should be. Though, I didn’t really form much of an opinion in “classical” music in my teens, I definitely enjoyed hearing to it in movies, especially in such great films, such as Stanley Kubrick’s “2001 – A Space Odyssey”. Nowadays, when I hear a Johann Strauss waltz, I no longer think of 18th century revelers in Venetian masks and fancy gowns, dancing in a grand ballroom with twenty foot chandeliers hanging above them; but instead, slow rotating floating space stations or airline stewardesses walking carefully down the aisles in zero gravity. My piano teacher recognized my passive taste for classical music immediately and offered different genres of music to keep me motivated in learning the instrument.
