This book presents and explores the Waddesdon Bequest, the name given to the Kunstkammer or cabinet collection of Renaissance treasures which was bequeathed to the British Museum by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, MP in 1898. The Bequest is named aer Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire, a fairy tale French chateau built by Baron Ferdinand from 1874 83, where the collection was housed during his lifetime. As a major Jewish banking family, the Rothschilds were the greatest collectors of the nineteenth century, seeking not only the finest crasmanship in their treasures, but also demonstrating great discernment and a keen sense of historical importance in selecting them. Baron Ferdinands aim, oen working in rivalry with his cousins, was to possess a special room filled with splendid, precious and intricate objects in the tradition of European courts of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. It was understood at the time that a collection of this quality could never be formed again, given the rarity and expense of the pieces, and the problems of faking and forgery of just this kind of material. The book will unlock the history and romance of this glorious collection through its exploration of some of its greatest treasures and the stories they tell. It will introduce makers and patrons, virtuoso crasmanship, faking and the history of collecting from the late medieval to modern periods, as told through the objects. Treasures discussed will include masterpieces of goldsmiths work in silver; jewellery; hardstones and engraved rock crystal; astonishing microcarvings in boxwood, painted enamel, ceramic and glass; arms and armour and curosities: exotic treasures incorporating ostrich eggs, Seychelles nut, amber or nautilus shell.     “OLD IN SUBSTANCE AND NEW IN MANNER”: THE SCULTORI AND GHISI ENGRAVING ENTERPRISE IN SIXTEENTH-CENTURY MANTUA AND BEYOND by Hilary Letwin A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland December, 2013 Part 1 Abstract: This dissertation seeks to reframe the way in which the prints of the incisori Mantovani, Giovanni Battista (1503-1575), Adamo (1530?-1587) and Diana Scultori (1547-1612), and Giorgio Ghisi (1520-1582), are examined. Previously, their contributions in the printmaking process, largely engraving prints that are after the designs of other artists, have been dismissed as reproductive. This dissertation examines the ways in which these printmakers worked to elevate their engravings from simply reproductive to creative works of art in their own right. Their engravings, which certainly took inspiration from the designs of Giulio Romano, among others, were not the product of a close collaboration between a master and the engravers. Instead, the engravers appear to have worked fairly autonomously, in Mantua and elsewhere, engaging with and manipulating their source material, experimenting technically and in the design of their prints, and finally questioning the role of engraving within the greater framework of artistic practice in the sixteenth century. Chapter one examines the work of Giovanni Battista, who used printmaking as a creative outlet, seeking a freedom not possible in his other sculptural projects that were carried out according to the specifications of patrons and artistic masters. His engravings can be seen as an attempt to “conquer” these outside influences. Chapter two considers the prints and career of Adamo Scultori, who used his prints to comment on the “enslavement” of reproductive printmakers to their sources.

    Books as art objects: Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild’s library at Waddesdon Manor Figure 1 : The south facade of Waddesdon Manor, overlooking the garden Waddesdon Manor, a fantasy 19th-century château embedded in a county once nicknamed “Rothschildshire” because of the number of properties owned by the family in such a limited geographical area, is an excellent representation of what may be known as the goût Rothschild. The manor, whose architectural style is an association of decorative elements taken from various French Renaissance Loire Valley castles, was designed to host Ferdinand de Rothschild’s art collection and accommodate it for week-end enjoyment and guests’ entertainment. The visual identity of the site, common to many Rothschild’s possessions, originates from the juxtaposition of French 18th=century decorative art and English 18th-century portraits. Figure 2 : The grey drawing room, on the ground floor is representative of the Rothschild taste. It allies 18th century British portraits and 18th century French decorative arts. The fortune of the Rothschild family can be traced back to the career of Ferdinand’s great- grandfather Mayer Amschel Rothschild, born in 1743 or 1744 in the Jewish ghetto of Frankfurt am Main, an independent imperial city. His family, who derived their name from the house of a 16th century ancestor, Zum roten Schield – “At the Red Schield” – had been involved in the textile trade, but Mayer specialised in antique dealing, and ran a mail-order business of coins and other antiquities. It is a family collection, formed by a father and son: Baron Anselm von Rothschild (1803–1874) of Frankfurt and Vienna, and Baron Ferdinand, who became a British citizen in 1860, and a Trustee of the British Museum in 1896. Named after Baron Ferdinand’s Renaissance-style château, Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire, the Bequest is a 19th-century recreation of a princely Kunstkammer or ‘art chamber’ of the Renaissance. The collection demonstrates how, within two generations, the Rothschilds expanded from Frankfurt to become Europe’s leading banking dynasty.

    Bibliography Sources for further reading May 2011 National Trust Bibliography Introduction Over many years a great deal has been published about the properties and collections in the care of the National Trust, yet to date no single record of those publications has been established. The following Bibliography is a first attempt to do just that, and provides a starting point for those who want to learn more about the properties and collections in the National Trust’s care. Inevitably this list will have gaps in it. Do please let us know of additional material that you feel might be included, or where you have spotted errors in the existing entries. All feedback to [email protected] would be very welcome. Please note the Bibliography does not include minor references within large reference works, such as the Encyclopaedia Britannica, or to guidebooks published by the National Trust. How to use The Bibliography is arranged by property, and then alphabetically by author. For ease of use, clicking on a hyperlink will take you from a property name listed on the Contents Page to the page for that property. ‘Return to Contents’ hyperlinks will take you back to the contents page.
