  • THE CYCLONE, 834 Surf Avenue at West 10Th Street, Brooklyn
Landmarks Preservation Commission July 12, 1988; Designation List 206 LP-1636 THE CYCLONE, 834 Surf Avenue at West 10th Street, Brooklyn. Built 1927. Inventor Harry c. Baker. Engineer Vernon Keenan. Landmark Site: Borough of Brooklyn Tax Map Block 8697, Lot 4 in part consisting of the land on which the described improvement is situated. On September 15, 1987, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the cyclone and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 12). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Six witnesses spoke in favor of designation, including the ride's owner, whose support was given dependant upon his ability to perform routine repair and maintenance. One witness spoke in opposition to designation. The Commission has received many letters in favor of designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS Summary Descended from the ice slides enjoyed in eighteenth-century Russia, through the many changes incorporated by French and American inventors, the Cyclone has been one of our country's premier roller coasters since its construction in 1927. Designed by engineer Vernon Keenan and built by noted amusement ride inventor Harry C. Baker for Jack and Irving Rosenthal, the Cyclone belongs to an increasingly rare group of wood-track coasters; modern building codes make it irreplaceable. The design of its twister-type circuit and the enormous weight of the cars allow the trains to travel on their own momentum after being carried up to the first plunge by mechanical means. Now part of Astroland amusement park, the Cyclone is not only a well recognized feature of Coney Island, where the first "modern" coaster was built in 1884, but, sadly, is the only roller coaster still operating there.

The site was formerly an island, but became partially connected to the mainland by landfill. Coney Island is possibly best known as the site of amusement parks and a major resort that reached their peak during the first half of the 20th century. It declined in popularity after World War II and endured years of neglect. In recent years, the area has seen the Coney Island peninsula from the air opening of MCU Park and has become home to the minor league baseball team the Brooklyn Cyclones. The neighborhood of the same name is a community of 60,000 people in the western part of the peninsula, with Sea Gate to its west, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach to its east, and Gravesend to the north. • And IMAGINE! by Raúl Colón
A Curriculum Guide to DRAW! and IMAGINE! By Raúl Colón BACKGROUND/SUMMARY Draw! and Imagine!, two wordless picture books by Raúl Colón, invite readers of all ages to explore the power of art and imagination. In these two books, we see the joyous effects of art on the life of a young boy. Readers take an active part in bringing each story to life by combining the visual storytelling techniques and clues provided by the artist with their own words. In Draw! we see a young boy, sick in bed, entertaining himself by reading a book about Africa. We first see him referring back to the book while drawing animals. He then begins to imagine himself in Africa, and as his imagination takes over, he encounters and draws a series of animals. He even shares his drawings with some of them. Ultimately, the boy bids farewell to the elephant that first welcomed him and returns to the reality of his room. A final page-turn shows the boy back at school, sharing his artwork with his classmates. Imagine! tells the story of a young boy who rides his skateboard on a trip across the Brooklyn Bridge to visit the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan. As he looks at famous pictures—The Sleeping Gypsy by Henri Rousseau, Three Musicians by Pablo Picasso, and Icarus by Henri Matisse—the characters leap off their canvases and then join the boy on a joyous romp around New York. They take a train to Coney Island and ride the Cyclone (a famous wooden roller coaster), visit the Statue of Liberty, eat hot dogs, and enjoy singing while sitting on the lawn in Central Park.

About a year ago, with the millenium fast approaching, an informal call went out that we were compiling a selec- tion of recent writings by Puerto Ricans in the diaspora for publication in the Centro Journal. Far beyond expectations, we received submissions from nearly fifty writers. Most of them are young and unpublished, and many of them were unknown to us. Works poured in from many places, not just the Bronx, El Barrio and Loisaida in New York but also Springfield (Massachusetts), Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, Minneapolis and Madison (Wisconsin), among many other sites, including New Jersey and Connecticut. We were, of course, thrilled at the abundance and rich creativity of the present-day generation of Boricua writers, but at the same time overwhelmed at the prospect of trying to arrive at a selection that would fit in the allotted pages.

Historical Note / Series Description On September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked the United States by hijacking planes and crashing them into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. A third plane was hijacked but the passengers revolted against the terrorists and the plane crashed in Pennsylvania before it could reach its target. The World Trade Center is 30 miles west of Nassau County. Many Long Island residents worked in the World Trade Center's Twin Towers and the surrounding area known as the Financial District and many New York City firefighters and New York City police officers who rushed to the scene were from Long Island. Long Island residents who worked as fire fighters, police officers, MTA workers and construction workers went back to downtown Manhattan day after day to sift through the rubble. The personal accounts of some of these workers are a unique part of our collection. Individuals, trade unions, government agencies and health care workers from Long Island rushed to the aid of the wounded city. This collection records their actions with documents, photos and personal accounts. In the suburbs, workers took a break from the recovery efforts downtown only to wake up the next day and ride back to the city to continue cleaning up the aftermath.

(Credit: Coney Island History Project) Long before Disneyland, before roller coasters evolved into an international phenomenon, and even before IAAPA was founded, there was Coney Island. As with many storied places in New York City, this classic amusement mecca is etched in our collective consciousness. Coney Island conjures a riot of sights and sounds that recalls both a simpler time and a wilder time: screaming passengers aboard the many white-latticed roller coasters that dotted the boardwalk; the stately spires and statues at Dreamland; riders mounting the “Steeplechase’s” mechanical steeds; cars swinging and swaying on the “Wonder Wheel”; the clanging of the carousels’ band organs bleeding into the clamor of the crowd; the “Parachute Jump” towering high above it all. This Brooklyn outpost was many things, including an oceanside refuge for teeming masses seeking relief from the city’s summertime inferno. It was a proverbial melting pot, bringing people from many cultures and classes together in a kind of grand social experiment. It was a place where immigrants could open a business and pursue their American dream.
