Gustavus REUNION WEEKEND JUNE 8-10, 2018 | GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE WelcFROM PRESIDENT ome BERGMAN

Greetings Gusties,

A warm welcome to all of you as you join us for this year’s Reunion Weekend! I hope that each of you feels welcome in this place, since it is a campus that belongs to all of us. Joined by your friends and classmates, this weekend is a time for celebrating, reconnecting, and affirming that you indeed made a great decision years ago to attend Gustavus. You can be proud of the legacy you have left for the current and future students, including 521 Gusties who celebrated their graduation just a few days ago.

You can also be proud of the changes afoot, both in terms of the structure for reunions and in terms of the College’s Gustavus Acts Strategic Plan. The strategic plan represents a commitment to honor the legacy you have helped build here and ensure its endurance for generations to come. We are excited about the progress we have already made in implementing various strategies associated with the plan. In fact, this reunion structure is fully aligned with that plan, breathing life into our commitment to providing meaningful opportunities for alumni to engage with one another and with the College. To that end, I hope you will take full advantage of all there is to offer this weekend, from quiet time in the arboretum to learning opportunities at Alumni College and everything in between. This place belongs to all of us and holds a special place in each of our hearts—let’s celebrate that sentiment this weekend and let our spirit shine!

Go Gusties!

President Rebecca Bergman FROMWelc THE ome REUNION CHAIR

Dear Gusties,

On behalf of this year’s reunion organizers, welcome home. For the majority of us, Gustavus was home for 4 years. It was where we grew into adulthood, it was where we made decisions about our futures, and it was where we made many of our lasting friendships. Hopefully this reunion will allow you to reconnect with one another, strengthen old bonds and perhaps build some new relationships.

As you will see, this new reunion model will allow you to spend plenty of time with classmates, and when you choose to participate in any of the many activities offered throughout the weekend, it will also provide the opportunity to engage with Gusties from other classes. Enjoy visiting old haunts and exploring new spaces on campus. Relive old memories and make some new ones. Most of all, envelop yourself with that indescribable “Gustie Spirit”—the one that brought us to Gustavus, kept us here for our college years and brings us back from time to time.

Enjoy your weekend!

Gusties Will Shine!

GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE 3 FROMWelc THE ome DIRECTOR OF THE OFFICE OF ALUMNI AND PARENT ENGAGEMENT

We are absolutely thrilled to welcome you back to campus for Reunion Weekend 2018! What you’re about to experience is the product of over a year of planning, leveraging resources from every corner of campus, and relying on the wonderful volunteer reunion committee members that have ensured the events will speak to the unique identity of each class. Many of those who enjoyed our first go-round of this new structure last year reveled in the feeling of the weekend being “all about them,” and we hope to deliver that same Gustie hospitality to you. In all, well over 100 members of the campus community will be on hand to help you thoroughly enjoy yourselves, so please let us know if at any point there’s something we can do to help make your time on campus everything you want it to be.

Upon reflection, many reunion-goers last year also felt that their time spent on campus proved valuable in providing opportunities not only to reconnect with old friends, but also to forge new relationships with classmates they may not have known as well during their time on the Hill. Ultimately, that’s what this weekend is about: relive those glory days, remember the sights and sounds of all the people, places, and things that encompassed your Gustavus experience, and reflect on how that experience continues to impact who you’ve become.

Enjoy the weekend, Gusties—welcome home!

GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE 13 SESSIONAlumni DESCRIPTIONS College

Asia–U.S. Relations in the 21st Century Richard Leitch, Associate Professor of Political Science, Environmental Studies, Japanese Studies, and Peace Studies Economics-focused prognosticators imagined the 21st century would be the Asian century, implying power through peace based on economic cooperation and development. This optimistic view is challenged by the reality of territorial disputes, politicization of history, and nuclear ambitions. Join us for a lively discussion focused on present Asia-Pacific issues, and the role of the US in the region.

The Bards of Valley View: Legendary Professors of Gustavus Bob Douglas, Emeritus Professor of Geography Life stories of some of the old professors at Gustavus—Esby, Kyle Boomer Montague, Chet Johnson, Vic Gustafson and others who all lived on Valley View Road in Saint Peter.

Dialogue and Deliberation at Gustavus Leila Brammer, Professor and Chair of Communication Studies Talking with, about, and across differences presents challenges in personal, professional, and civic life. Learn about how Gustavus is engaging students and communities in more civil and productive ways to talk with each other.

Healthcare Simulations: An Interactive Teaching and Learning Approach Heidi Meyer ’98, Associate Professor of Nursing Many nursing and other health professional programs use high-fidelity patient simulation (HPS) as an interactive learning strategy, immersing students in essential curricular content pertinent to meet the needs of today’s patients. HPS promotes skills acquisition, aids in the development of clinical judgment, and teaches students about complex clinical situations without exposing patients to unnecessary risk. Participants of this session will experience what today’s learning environment is like for current Gustavus Nursing and other pre-health profession students by applying clinical reasoning and knowledge of inter-professional communication and collaboration in a simulated patient care experience.

14 2018 REUNION WEEKEND JFK Assassination: The Mystery & Legend David Jones ’83 Where were you when JFK was assassinated? More than half a century later, this event still sparks discussion and controversy. Join us for a balanced discussion of one of the pivotal events of the 20th century.

Living Long and Well Dick Martin, Emeritus Professor of Psychology What do we know about living a long life and to what is it related? Can we predict the basis for longevity? Do people who live a long time enjoy their old age and is there a lifestyle that helps to make it positive? We do not have all the answers to living long and well but enough research has been done to give us some helpful clues.

Old-Timers and Science at Gustavus Larry Potts, Emeritus Professor of Chemistry As Gustavus is undertaking a $70 million renovation and expansion of Nobel Hall of Science: it’s important to think back on what the earliest teachers and students of science faced on the Hill. The names Williamson, Uhler, Edquist, and Skartvedt were well-known to Gusties from the 1870s to the 1950s, but (except for Uhler) are unfamiliar to most graduates now. How these teachers taught science, the challenges they faced, and their often austere and even dangerous situations in Old Main will be interesting to those used to modern health, safety, fire code, and sanitary conditions.

Rereading Homer’s Odyssey William Freiert, Emeritus Professor of Classics A classic is a work of art that inspires new insights every time one examines it. Daniel Mendelsohn has just written a new best seller that demonstrates exactly that principle. This class will examine the Odyssey again, with fresh insights and a survey of the myriad ways in which Homer’s masterpiece has been (re-) read through history, especially in the last century.

The Saint John’s Bible Heritage Edition Adrianna Darden, Archives Specialist of Library Come and see Gustavus’ copy of The Saint John’s Bible Heritage Edition. The Saint John’s Bible is the first completely handwritten and illuminated Bible commissioned by a Benedictine Abbey since the invention of the printing press. The Heritage Edition is a full-size fine art reproduction of . This session will be open house style, so feel free to stop by at anytime. Multiple volumes will be on display, staff will be on hand for questions, and interaction with the Bible will be encouraged!

GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE 15 Scotch, Chocolate, and Legacy Gifts—Oh my! Thomas Young ’88, Vice President for Advancement, Ann Sponberg Peterson ’83, Associate Vice President for Advancement Come enjoy single-malt scotch from the Highlands, Speyside, and the Islands. Taste some wonderful chocolate and enjoy the good company of Gustavus colleagues. This exceptionally soft-touch conversation about legacy giving will be both savory and sweet. Cheers!

The Statue of Liberty: Two Decades of Effort, Almost Impossible Odds David Jones ’83 The Statue of Liberty stands proudly in New York Harbor, but how did the Statue come to be? What does it symbolize? Join us for a compelling look at the idea, the construction and the meaning behind one of the most recognizable symbols in the world.

Wales: A Brief Look at the Country, Its Language, and Its Music Traditions Ellis Jones ’52, Emeritus Professor of Economics and Management From 1973 through 2007, Ellis Jones organized an annual St. David’s Day in Chapel service. During each of the Chapel Services, four Welsh hymns were sung by not only the entire congregation but also with the assistance of a mass choir of over 200 students. Over the years, attendance at the service grew to being one of the largest Welsh Hymn Sings in the United States on or around March 1. In his presentation, Professor Jones (who is of Welsh descent) will provide (by means of a handout) information about the country of Wales, its language, and its musical traditions concluding with the entire class singing Cwm Rhondda, the No. 1 Welsh hymn!

Walking Through Gustavus History Glenn Kranking ’98 Associate Professor of History, Scandinavian Studies, and Russian, Chair in Scandinavian Studies Associate Professor of History and Scandinavian Studies Glenn Kranking ‘98 will lead a walking tour of campus reflecting on the history and growth of the College.

GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE 19 Alm a Ma te r A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE ALMA MATER

In 1916, the staff ofCollege Breezes (predecessor to the Gustavian Weekly) sponsored a contest “to stimulate student talent in the writing of a worthy college song.” Gustavus Adolphus College annuals record at least two earlier attempts, but this new song was to become the “official” Gustavus song. The 1915-16 term ended without much response to the contest, so the College Breezes extended the contest into the 1916-17 term, and it was only then that John Helmer Olson, a sophomore at the time, submitted his lyrics. His entry was selected (research has turned up evidence of only two other entries) and was printed in the January 1917 issue of College Breezes. Olson, a member of the Class of 1919, was an active writer while a student at Gustavus and became editor of the school newspaper during his junior and senior year. He would later be ordained in the Lutheran church and serve for many years as pastor of First Lutheran Church of Saint Peter. His “Alma Mater” was sung and formally dedicated to him in 1923 at the halftime of one of the first basketball games held in the College’s then-new gymnasium. The winning entry was to be set to music by professor August Waldemar Anderson, head of the music department at the time and director of the band and several choruses. He composed the setting in the key of A flat, which is still used today. August Waldemar Anderson, known as A.W. Anderson, worked in the Gustavus music department from 1909 to 1921. In 1910 he served as director of the Conservatory. He came to Gustavus after studying piano and theory with George N. Morse in Worcester, Mass., studying piano with Felix Fox and theory with W. E. Knowlton, and studying organ with Everett Truett in Boston.

Every dollar helps to provide the highest quality liberal arts education to our students. Distribution of Gustavus Fund support includes: 43% for Scholarships and Financial Aid 34% for Instruction, Academic Support, and Research 13% for Student Services 8% for Institutional Support 2% for Public Service

Heritage Scholarship Program Designed to attract the best and brightest, Heritage Scholarships increase financial support for high- achieving students with high financial need. Combined with a matching challenge from Bruce ’77 and Susan ’78 Edwards, a four–year commitment of $3,000 per year will provide a first-year student with a scholarship of $6,000 for each of their four years at Gustavus. Heritage Scholarships can be sponsored individually or in groups, and can be presented in your name, a family or group name, or in honor of a special individual. To get started, please contact the Office of Advancement at 507-933-7512.

24 2018 REUNION WEEKEND Class Endowed Scholarship Program Endowed scholarship funds create a legacy that will last forever, awarding scholarships that directly impact the lives of students. To find out if your class has an endowed scholarship and to make a gift, please contact the Office of Advancement at 507-933-7512.

Gustavus Heritage Partnership The Gustavus Heritage Partnership recognizes individuals who have thoughtfully and generously included a gift to the College in their estate plans. We invite you to join this association of over 1,000 current members. Your future planned gift may be directed to “where the need is greatest,” or you may wish to establish an endowed fund for the benefit of student scholarship or student research, to create a faculty endowed chair, to add to an existing fund, or to create an endowed fund for a specific purpose. To join, please contact the Office of Advancement at 507-933-7512.

You can make a gift during Reunion Weekend at gustavus.edu/give or in-person at the Reunion Weekend registration desk. Thank you for your support of Gustavus!
