In Swaine's catalog (1909) 191 species are recog- nized from America north of Mexico. In Leng's catalog (1920) 383 species are listed, and at present there are about 550 described species from the same territory. This great increase in our knowledge of the family is due nearly entirely to the writings of A. D. Hopkins, J. M. Swaine, and M. W. Blackman. To date, 64 species have been taken in Minnesota, and a number of others doubtless occur. The material upon which this bulletin is based is from the University of Minnesota insect collection, and specimens collected by the writer during the summer of 1936. -

Navas-Cortes, Stephen Parnell, Roel Potting, Philippe Lucien Reignault, Hans-Hermann Thulke, Wopke van der Werf, Antonio Vicent Civera, Jonathan Yuen, Lucia Zappala, Jean-Claude Gregoire, Franz Streissl, Virag Kertesz and Panagiotis Milonas Abstract Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Plant Health prepared a list of non-EU Scolytinae spp. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) affecting coniferous hosts. A literature review and search of databases, conducted up to January 2019, identified 804 Scolytinae species and subspecies of coniferous hosts. These Scolytinae were assigned to two categories (a) 705 non-EU species and subspecies, known to occur only outside the EU or having only limited presence in the EU, and (b) 99 species and subspecies with substantial presence in the EU (i.e. they are only reported so far from the EU or known to occur or be widespread in some Member States or reported in more than three EU MS). Scolytinae of category (b) will be excluded from further categorisation efforts. The main knowledge gaps and uncertainties of this listing concern (i) the status of species that are present in only a few MS and (ii) the status of the species that are present only at boundaries of the EU territory. The non-EU Scolytinae will be categorised by the Panel in a separate opinion. -

2009 THE GREAT LAKES ENTOMOLOGIST 101 The Native and Introduced Bark and Ambrosia Beetles of Michigan (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae) Anthony I. Cognato1, Nicolas Barc1, Michael Philip2, Roger Mech3, Aaron D. Smith1, Eric Galbraith1, Andrew J. Storer4, and Lawrence R. Kirkendall5 Abstract Our knowledge of the biogeography of Scolytinae of eastern temperate North America is very patchy. We used data from hand collecting, trapped material (from 65 of 83 counties), and museum collections, supplemented by literature records, to compile a list comprising 107 bark beetle species in 45 genera for Michigan, a state with an especially rich diversity of woody plants. We provide detailed collection data documenting 32 species not previously cata- logued for Michigan, 23 of which are new state records; the genera Trypophloeus and Trischidias are reported from Michigan for the first time. Fifteen Michigan scolytines are not native to North America; Ambrosiodmus rubricollis (Eich- hoff), Crypturgus pusillus (Gyllenhal), Euwallacea validus (Eichhoff), Xyleborus californicus Wood, Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky) have not previously been found in the state. We report Michigan hosts for 67 species, including 49 new host associations for the 93 native species. Despite identifying over 4000 specimens for this study, we fully expect to find many more species: over 30 additional species occur in the Great Lakes region. ____________________ Faunistic studies are a first step towards a deeper understanding of the ecology of local biotic communities. These studies provide records of diversity and serve as reference points for the assessment of faunal differences due to time, space, or environmental conditions. To increase the understanding of regional scolytine faunas, we present a study begun in 1978 of the bark and ambrosia beetles of Michigan. -

Scolytinae species are recognized as one of the most important tree mortality agents in coniferous forests worldwide, and many are known invaders because they are easily transported in wood products. Nonnative trees planted in novel habitats often exhibit excep- tional growth, in part because they escape herbivore (such as Scolytinae) pressure from their native range. Increasing accidental introductions of forest pest species as a consequence of international trade, however, is expected to diminish enemy release of nonnative forest trees. In this context, there is need to characterize patterns of forest herbivore species invasion risks at global scales. In this study, we analyze the establishment potential of 64 North American Scolytinae species in the Southern Hemisphere. We use climate-based ecological niche models (MaxEnt) to spatially define the potential distribution of these Scolytinae species in regions of the Southern Hemisphere were pines are planted. Our model predicts that all of the pine- growing regions of the Southern Hemisphere are capable of supporting some species of North American Scolytinae, but there are certain “hotspot” regions, southeastern Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Peru and southwestern Australia, that appear to be suitable for a particularly large number of species. -
