Quarstein, director emeritus of USS Monitor Center. Join us on Friday, December 18 at 12 p.m. for a virtual lecture with author and historian John V. Quarstein! Quarstein will give a presentation live from his home in Hampton, Virginia, on the remaining days of USS Monitor. Viewers are welcome to send Quarstein any comments or questions during the presentation, and he will answer following his talk. About this presentation: On Christmas Eve 1862, the ironclad Monitor received orders to proceed to Beaufort, North Carolina, to join a planned operation against Wilmington, North Carolina. Executive Officer S. D. Greene noted that Monitor was not a “sea-going vessel.” (The ship had almost sunk twice during its March 1862 trip from New York to Hampton Roads.) Monitor left Hampton Roads in clear weather on December 29, but encountered a heavy gale the next afternoon. The ironclad was overwhelmed by the heavy seas and sank in the early morning of December 31, 1862. As crew member Frank Butts noted, “The Monitor is no more.” 100 Museum Drive, 757-596-2222. HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS: A VIRTUAL CONCERT STARRING QUEEN ESTHER MARROW Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center December 19; 7 p.m. Enjoy a free concert in the comfort of your own home, starring the incomparable Queen Esther Marrow. Her career began when she was discovered by the great Duke Ellington at the age of 22. He recognized that her exceptional voice would take her very far. If was a journey that would include working with civil rights leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., world leaders including The Pope and three US Presidents, and countless celebrities. She has performed on Broadway and the silver screen. Her film credits range from The Last Dragon to Sesame Street. In addition, Queen Esther Marrow wrote, produced, and starred in her own Broadway play, Truly Blessed, where she played her idol, Mahalia Jackson. She has been fortunate enough to share the stage with Ms. Jackson as well as many other icons including Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Lena Horne, and Ella Fitzgerald. She has spent 26 years traveling around the world and inspiring people with her music. CELEBRATION IN LIGHTS Newport News Park Continuing through January 1 Celebration in Lights, Virginia’s first drive-through holiday light event, opens for its 28th season on Thanksgiving night (November 26, 2020). Newport News Park will be transformed by over a million individual lights, creating animated holiday and fanciful scenes. For its 28th year, the event will add new magical trees and upgrade the entrance arch in the Santa’s Enchanted Kingdom area, add candy theme display pieces and upgrade the brightness of the bulbs in the Candyland area, add additional deer display pieces and 3D trees to the deer arch area, and upgrade the rope lighting at the event entrance.

The Symphony has never apologized for its commitment to new music, but American orchestras have to deal with economic realities. For the San Francisco Symphony, as for its siblings across the country, the guiding principle of programming has always been balance.

    By Stephanie Y. Evans & Stephanie Shonekan Black Women’s Music Database chronicles over 600 Africana singers, songwriters, composers, and musicians from around the world. The database was created by Dr. Stephanie Evans, a professor of Black women’s studies (intellectual history) and developed in collaboration with Dr. Stephanie Shonekon, a professor of Black studies and music (ethnomusicology). Together, with support from top music scholars, the Stephanies established this project to encourage interdisciplinary research, expand creative production, facilitate community building and, most importantly, to recognize and support Black women’s creative genius. This database will be useful for music scholars and ethnomusicologists, music historians, and contemporary performers, as well as general audiences and music therapists. Music heals. The purpose of the Black Women’s Music Database research collective is to amplify voices of singers, musicians, and scholars by encouraging public appreciation, study, practice, performance, and publication, that centers Black women’s experiences, knowledge, and perspectives. This project maps leading Black women artists in multiple genres of music, including gospel, blues, classical, jazz, R & B, soul, opera, theater, rock-n-roll, disco, hip hop, salsa, Afro- beat, bossa nova, soka, and more. Study of African American music is now well established. Beginning with publications like The Music of Black Americans by Eileen Southern (1971) and African American Music by Mellonee Burnim and Portia Maultsby (2006),

She was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing and intonation, and a "horn-like" improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing. After tumultuous teenage years, Fitzgerald found stability in musical success with performances on many stages in the Harlem area, including her rendition of the nursery rhyme "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" that helped boost her to fame. In 1942, Fitzgerald left the amateur performances behind, signed a deal with Decca Records, and started her solo career by redefining the art of scat singing. It was not until her manager, Norman Granz, built Verve Records based on her vocal abilities that she recorded some of her more widely noted works. Under this label, Fitzgerald focused more on singing than scatting, providing perhaps her most career-defining works in her interpretation of the Great American Songbook. While Fitzgerald appeared in movies and as guests on popular television shows in the second half of the twentieth century, her musical collaborations with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Bill Kenny and the Ink Spots were some of her most notable acts outside of her solo career.

In Berlin gastiert Queen Esther Marrow vom 20.12. - 22.12.2016 im Admiralspalast und noch einmal am 16. 1. 2017 im Friedrichstadtpalast. Gestern nun war die erste Veranstaltung in Berlin. Dem Publikum wurde eine beeindruckende Show geboten. Faszinierende Lichteffekte, spektakuläre Laserstrahlen und farbenprächtige Kostüme. Im Hintergrund war eine Videoleinwand installiert, die sich über die Breite der Bühne erstreckte. Hier wurden u. a. berühmte Persönlichkeiten der Zeitgeschichte eingeblendet (z. B. N. Mandela, M. L. King, J. F. Kennedy, Ghandi usw.), die mit ihrem Wirken viel bewegt haben und sich auch für den Frieden eingesetzt haben. Auch Queen Esther Marrow kann man durch ihre Interpretation ihrer Musik als Friedensbotschafterin bezeichnen. Ihr zur Seite "The Harlem Gospel Singers". Drei Sänger und drei Sängerinnen bilden diesen Begleitchor. Chor ist vielleicht nicht der richtige Ausdruck, es sind ganz ausgezeichnete, eigenständige Gesangssolisten*innen, die in einem Chor zusammen singen. Sie ergänzen sich ganz wunderbar mit Queen Esther Marrow und stellen mit ihr zusammen eine Einheit dar.
