There is no charge to participate. Lunch will be available for purchase at the café! Originally named Sphynx as a deception, CSS Stonewall was an ironclad ram built by the Armand Brothers at Bordeaux, France. The ship was sold to Denmark and then acquired by the Confederacy on January 6, 1865. Captain Thomas Jefferson Page took command and after repairs at Coruna, Spain, Stonewall headed for American waters, planning to attack Port Royal Sound, South Carolina. The ship reached Cuba by May 1865. There, Page learned that the war was over. The ironclad was then sold to Spanish authorities and later acquired by the United States. NOVEMBER 16TH TOYS AHOY!: A MARITIME CHILDHOOD OPENING DAY The Mariners’ Museum and Park November 16; 9 a.m. Toys Ahoy! is a new and fun exhibit that connects the young and the young at heart. With 100 different items on display such as children’s books, games and toys, this exhibit will excite everyone of all ages! The collection includes wood and paper battleships, board games, card games, puzzles, motorized miniature engines and other historic toys and collectibles from years gone by. Take a look at the Lego room in the Model gallery, where a continuation of the Lego ship building competition is on display. There will also be a STEM activity to design your own toy boat, and the opportunity to hear stories and learn amazing facts from toy collectors and designers. For the holiday season, the Museum is sponsoring a maritime toy drive in conjunction with “Toys for Tots.” Come explore your childhood again and delight in this wonderful exhibit as we take you down memory lane with Toys Ahoy! at “America’s National Maritime Museum!” 100 Museum Drive, 757-596-2222. PET FIRST AID AND CPR Peninsula SPCA November 16; 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. This one-day class includes instruction on: CPR, Rescue Breathing, Muzzling & Restraint, Choking Management, Bleeding Protocols, Shock Management, Heat and cold Injuries, Poisoning, The Pet Tech Snout to Tail Assessment for Injury and Wellness, Dental Care, Senior Care and more. FAMILY CLAY PROJECT – TEXTURE TREES AND GNOMES Peninsula Fine Arts Center November 16; 10:30 a.m. Looking for something to do with your kids… join us for some family fun! You will work together to create an adorable ceramic artwork. Each family member will work with clay and tools to roll, pinch, and add texture to trees. Then your family will add glazes and will create a gnome to complete the forest scene. Quarstein, Director Emeritus, USS Monitor Center. Hampton Roads History Lectures are free with $1 Museum admission, but reserving a seat is suggested as seating is limited. Reserve seats online. “Operation Torch” was the first Anglo-American amphibious invasion of World War II. It was meant to open a second front against the Axis Powers in North Africa. The Western Task Force was comprised of troops commanded by General George Patton with Rear Admiral Henry Hewitt in charge of the naval forces. This attack force, including 34,000 men and 86 million tons of supplies, left Hampton Roads on October 24, 1942. The Western Task Force landed in French Morocco on November 8, 1942. The attack was the largest overseas invasion force to leave the US during the war and was eventually successful in driving the Axis out of North Africa. 100 Museum Drive, 757-596-2222. AN INTIMATE EVENING WITH ESTHER MARROW AND FRIENDS Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center November 16; 7 p.m. Join us on November 16th as we continue the ICONIC celebration of our season with a concert from the incomparable Queen Esther Marrow! Her career began when she was discovered by the great Duke Ellington at the age of 22. He recognized that her exceptional voice would take her very far. If was a journey that would include working with civil rights leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., world leaders including The Pope and three US Presidents, and countless celebrities. She has performed on Broadway and the silver screen. Her film credits range from The Last Dragon to Sesame Street. In addition, Queen Esther Marrow wrote, produced, and starred in her own Broadway play, Truly Blessed, where she played her idol, Mahalia Jackson. She has been fortunate enough to share the stage with Ms. Jackson as well as many other icons including Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Lena Horne, and Ella Fitzgerald. Our Sensory Friendly days are a great way to explore exhibitions, during quieter times. You can also enjoy self-guided art activities in our Hands On For Kids Gallery. Gallery Guides are available. A quiet sensory zone is available with noise deafening headphones. Accessibility: PFAC welcomes all visitors and is committed to making its programs and services accessible to everyone.
