Roddick is Raising a Racquet in Cashiers Two of the greatest competitors in tennis history will play a charity exhibition match on Saturday, July 27, at Cedar Creek Racquet Club in Cashiers, North Carolina. Recently retired superstar and new Cashiers homeowner Andy Roddick takes the court against good friend and fellow superstar Jim Courier in The UCB Mountain Challenge. The event is hosted by the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce and benefits Mountain Youth Charities. Roddick is passionate about brightening the futures of our country’s youth. It iwas no wonder that when he chose to become a seasonal resident of the Cashiers community, he wanted to do something to help the kids in Former World No. 1 Tennis Professionals the community. Andy Roddick and Jim Courier The marquee matchup brings together players who have been ranked will face off Saturday, July 27th at No. 1 in the world. Roddick held that position following his victory in the Cedar Creek Racquet Club in 2003 U.S. Open, one of 32 ATP titles in his career. Courier, meanwhile, was Cashiers, North Carolina the world’s No. 1 player four times in the 1990s. He totaled 23 ATP victories, to raise money for local youth charities include four Grand Slam titles. The UCB Mountain Challenge will also include two preliminary matches. The first is a battle between top-ranked juniors Thai Kwiatkowski of Charlotte and Korey Lovett of Brevard, and the second is a doubles match pairing the winners of a local pro-am versus Roddick & Courier. Other festivities include a Friday evening Mountain Dinner Gala hosted by Canyon Kitchen at Lonesome Valley with acclaimed Executive Chef John Fle- er, and a Saturday morning VIP breakfast with Roddick and Courier. Tickets for this unique event are on sale now. Fans can also choose from an array of luxury box tickets, VIP tickets , reserved seats and group packages. “This is exciting for our club and the Cashiers community,” said Scott Handback, General Manager of Cedar Creek. “We’re thrilled to provide folks in the Carolinas and Georgia with a rare chance to see two of the world’s best tennis players compete in such a scenic mountain setting.” The charity match came about when Roddick and wife, actress Brooklyn Decker, decided to live in Cashiers on a seasonal basis. They wanted to make a difference locally by helping young people, so they met with long-time Cashiers resident and businessman William McKee. “The goal is to establish a long-term program for all kids in this area,” McKee said. “A new non-profit – Mountain Youth Charities – has been formed for that sole purpose.” Grounds open at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 27. James Bollettieri has tennis in his blood. While he’s the son of famed coach Nick Bollettieri —founder of the IMG Academy, which developed stars like Anna Kournikova and Andre Agassi —Bollettieri has staked his own claim as an elite coach over a career spanning 45 years. Bollettieri, 65, doesn’t think of tennis as merely a sport, but part of a varied “lifestyle” that encompasses art, photography, his love of surfing, and the outdoors. It’s all part of a whole that defines who he is. Some of Bollettieri’s earliest memories of tennis stretch back to being four years old and on the court beside his dad up to his young adult years traveling the country, initially observing his father and later mentoring and shaping tennis greats himself. Bollettieri says he started coaching at just 15, working during the summers at his father’s camp, filling in wherever he was needed. “It started out with ‘son, go down there and take care of that section of mainly adult women,’ helping out wherever there was a need, which eventually grew to running camps, which is a big responsibility,” Bollettieri says. That dovetailed with his burgeoning interest in photography, which began when he was in the ninth grade. He would go on to earn his Bachelor of Arts in photography from the University of Miami. The MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation operates in Durkeeville, a historically African American community in Jacksonville’s urban core. We offer programs to underserved youth living or going to school in Health Zone 1 and JSO Zone 5. According to the Jacksonville Children’s Commission's ‘State of Jacksonville’s Children Report’ (2011), Health Zone 1 (consisting of zip codes 32202, -04, -06, -08, -09, and -54) has the highest concentration of risk factors for raising a child. In Health Zone I, 26% of the population lives below the poverty line and 38.4% of the population of children under 18 are living below the poverty line.
