Its purpose is to reflect the progress of philosophy as a whole and to increase the exchange of ideas and arguments between different contemporary schools of thought. Manuscrito is mostly devoted to original articles dealing with relevant and important philosophical issues. However, there is also a section for reviews of selected books and for critical discussions of important articles. Since Manuscrito intends to promote international philosophical dialogue, submissions from all over the world are welcome. On the one hand. aesthetics designates the theory of sensib­ ility as the form of possible experience; on the other hand, it desig­ nates the theory of art as a rdl ection on real experience. The first is the objective element of sensation. which is conditioned by the a priori Conns of space and time (the 'T ranscendental Aesthetic ' aCthe en"rique of Pure Reason); the second is the subjective element of sensation, which is expressed in the feeling of pleasure and pain (the 'Critiqu e of Aesthetic Judgment' in the Critique of Judgment) , Gilles Deleuze ar­ gues that these two aspects of the theory of sensation (aesthetics) can � reunited only at the pric e of a radic al recasting of the transcenden­ tal project as form!Jlated by Kant, pushing it in the direction of what Schelling once called a 'superior empiricism': it is only when the conditions of experience in general become the genetic conditions of experience that they can be reunited with the structures of works real of an.     Effects of the Agrégation de Philosophie on Twentieth- Century French Philosophy AL A N D . S C HRI ft much attention has been paid to developments in French philosophy over the past half century, and it has been frequently noted that the recent history of French philosophy differs significantly from its counterparts in England, Germany, and the United States. While many reasons for these differences have been suggested, in what follows I would like to suggest that there is an important and unique French institution—one with no equivalent in the English-speaking or German academic systems—that has had a significant impact on developments in French philosophy throughout the twentieth century. This institution is the Agrégation de Philosophie, and its effects are virtually unknown among philosophers outside France. Even within France—while knowledge of and experience with the agréga- tion is part of the intellectual formation and career of virtually every academic educated in France, including every philosopher teaching in a university and the majority of philosophers teaching the classe de philosophie in French lycées—French philosophers themselves seem relatively unaware and uninterested in the history of the agrégation and the effects that this history has had on philosophical practices in France. What I hope to do in the following pages is explain how the agréga- tion de philosophie works, and suggest that its impact on the education of French philosophy students and the teaching corps in both the university and lycée helps explain a number of developments in French philosophy over the past century. I will also explain why the French philosophical tradition differs from its American counterpart in some very significant ways.

    6 Genesis and Difference: Deleuze, Maïmon, and the Post-Kantian Reading of Leibniz Daniel W. Smith Introduction: Deleuze, Maïmon, Leibniz Deleuze’s appropriation of Leibniz’s philosophy is undertaken from a resolutely post-Kantian viewpoint. On this score, it would be difficult to overemphasize the influence on Deleuze of Salomon Maïmon, one of the earliest critics of Kant’s critical philosophy. Maïmon’s Essay on Transcendental Philosophy was published in 1790, one year before the publi- cation of Kant’s Critique of Judgment. It was Maïmon’s critiques of Kant that largely determined the subsequent direction of post-Kantian philosophy, at least with regard to the issues that would come to preoccupy Deleuze’s early work. The two primary substantive exigencies laid down by Maïmon in his critique of Kant reappear like leitmotifs in almost every one of Deleuze’s books up through 1969, even if Maïmon’s name is not always explicitly mentioned: the search for the genetic elements of real experience (and not merely the conditions of possible experience), and the positing of a principle of difference as the fulfillment of this condition (whereas identity is the condition of the possible, difference is the condition of the real). One might say that these two exigencies of Maïmon’s thought are the two components of Deleuze’s own ‘transcendental empiricism’.1 In this article, I would like to examine the way in which Deleuze’s early interpretation of Leibniz was determined by his reading of Maïmon’s critique of Kant. Deleuze considered Maïmon to be ‘a great, great philosopher’, (CGD 13 March 1978), and his own understanding of Maïmon was indebted to the well-known French interpretations of Martial Gueroult and Jules Vuillemin.2 In general terms, Maïmon’s influence on Deleuze can be traced to at least two factors.
