    SPORTING LEGENDS: AXEL MERCKX SPORT: CYCLING COMPETITIVE ERA: 1993 - 2007 Axel Merckx (born August 8, 1972 in Uccle, Belgium), the son of the legendary Eddy Merckx, was a professional road bicycle racer since November 1993. In 1995 he joined Team Motorola as a team-mate of the young Lance Armstrong. Despite several strong years of racing, including winning the Belgian national championship in 2000, Axel is probably still more famous for being the son of five-time Tour de France champion Eddy Merckx than for any of his cycling exploits. Despite being overshadowed by his father's formidable record, Axel has repeatedly vowed to make his mark by accomplishing feats Eddy never managed - including a Tour de France stage win at the top of Alpe d'Huez and a win in the Paris-Tours World Cup race - but has yet to make good on these promises. He has a large number of fans in Belgium, and would undoubtedly engender a great deal more goodwill if he were ever to achieve either of those elusive wins. One place where he has overshadowed his father is at the Olympic Games. A good climber, Axel is probably at his best in the mid-altitude mountain ranges, notably the Massif Central and the Ardennes. His favorite race, and the one he feels best in, is Liège-Bastogne-Liège. He is also always aiming for a Tour de France stage win, and can often be found in long breaks. His sprinting capacities are not that strong, so he is often beaten at the finish. SPORTING LEGENDS: AXEL MERCKX Merckx enjoyed his 2004 Olympic Bronze success in Athens.

    CHAMPIONNATS DU MONDE ROUTE UCI 16 au 24 septembre 2017 DOSSIER DE PRESSE Bergen, NORVEGE BERGEN (NORVEGE) Bergen est une ville du Sud-Ouest de la Norvège, capitale du comté de Hordaland. Elle est la deuxième ville du pays avec ses 280’000 habitants. C’est une cité internationale possédant le charme et l’atmosphère d’un petit village. “Porte d’entrée des Fjords de Norvège”, Bergen est classée patrimoine mondial par l’UNESCO et a le statut de Ville Européenne de la Culture. La côte de la région de Bergen est parsemée de milliers de petites îles. L’archipel et les majestueux fjords forment un paysage très varié. La ville est comme un spectaculaire amphithéâtre grimpant sur les flancs de la montagne, surplombant la mer et entourant ses visiteurs. La tradition et l’histoire se côtoient avec une scène culturelle très dynamique. L’héritage de la période hanséatique va de pair avec le statut actuel de Bergen comme Ville Européenne de la Culture. Les deux sont très visibles lorsqu’on se promène dans la ville. Bergen est protégée de la Mer du Nord par les îles Askøy, Holsnøy (la municipalité de Meland) et Sotra (les municipalités de Fjell, Sund et Øygarden). De par sa proximité avec la Mer du Nord et les Fjords, Bergen et sa région sont habituées à des conditions climatiques variées. Du ciel bleu clair à la joie de la pluie, les habitants de l’Ouest de la Norvège vivent avec la nature. Grâce au Gulf Stream (“courant du golfe”), le climat est bien meilleur que la latitude ne l’indique.

Polish people, however, did not stop fighng. Already in 1939 conspiratorial groups were formed, that in 1942 adopted the name of the Naonal Army. It was the largest of the conspiratorial European organizaons. Besides armed acons against the occupant equally important were reconnaissance acons, consisted of gaining and transferring materials about locaon, moves and intenons of the enemy, to the headquarters. One of the elements proving the efficiency of the intelligence network of the Polish underground state was the daily efforts by hundreds of people-couriers, who for many days with constant exposure of life, wandered throughout whole of Europe, carrying small but important parcels. This was informaon about the number of German troops transferred to parcular secons of the front line, or reports from the armaments factories, and also relaons of the situaon in concentraon camps. Courier’s acvity of the Polish underground state was twofold. On the one hand they dealt with spread of informaon from occupied territories, useful for conducng the war against the enemies of Poland; on the other hand they helped with transferring people from the Polish territory, threatened with arrest or death, to a safe place. This second form of acvity had a parcularly wide range on pre-war Southern borderland of our homeland. In the wide belt of the Beskydy and the Carpathians connued the movement of people crossing the border, either of life threatening or freedom reasons by the occupying regimes, as well as the desire to fight the occupying forces in the ranks of the regular army in western Europe.
