Your Curate writes

A number of years ago, a friend of mine informed me that she was potentially to go on the TV show “Who wants to be a millionaire?” The idea of the show was for a contestant to answer a series of questions that seemed to get progressively more challenging in the hope of winning a million pounds. For each question they were four choices and every time a question was answered correctly the prize money rose.

In the quiz there were some life lines that could be used if the contestant came across a question they were unsure of. These included asking the audience to vote on what they thought was the right answer, taking away two wrong answers and also phone a friend. In the phone a friend section the presenter, Chris Tarrant, would phone one of the contestant’s friends to see if they could answer the question. It was as a “phone a friend” that my involvement with the show nearly happened.

I was asked by my friend if I would be happy to be phoned up by Chris Tarrant if she got through to the main show and if she thought I would know the answer. I was asked to be at home between 6 and 9 one Thursday evening and to keep off the phone. Well my ego was flattered and of course I agreed, although we didn’t negotiate whether I would get a cut of the prize money, as being asked was good enough.

So, I sat through the evening without making a phone call and at about a quarter to nine the phone rang. I decided to play it cool and let it ring a few times before casually answering the call and waited to hear Chris Tarrant’s voice. Except the voice at the other end was not the quiz’s host but instead someone asking if I had had an accident that I wanted to claim for. I didn’t talk for long and instead used the best line I ever used to get rid of a caller I didn’t want to speak to saying, “I’m sorry I don’t have time, I’m waiting for a call from Chris Tarrant!”

It was only later that I discovered my friend didn’t get to the question section, but I often think about whether I would have known the answer.

There is a danger that we see prayer as a bit like a phone a friend. If there is something we can’t sort out we decide we might pray in the hope the right answer will come through. Of course, prayer is about partly about crying out for help as is so often seen in the psalms, but prayer is about so much more than. Prayer is how we develop our relationship with God, One who loves us and wants the best for us. It is about sharing all of ourselves with God, listening, thanking and asking.

If you would like to discover more about prayer or if you would like me to pray with you please be in touch, and I promise I won’t hurry you off the line as I am no longer expecting a call from Chris Tarrant! Rev Chris Hood

THE COMMON COLD

Could someone please discover a cure for the Common Cold The name belies its impact on young folk and the old. It begins with scratchy throats, and itchy, twitchy nostrils Like rampant garden ivy, it starts to spread its tendrils The throat gets sore, the nose starts dripping Red and shiny too, a beacon for our shipping ! This lasts for days and days, and then the cough begins The lozenges, and syrups flow, but the cough it always wins We struggle on, we go to work and do all the things we should But feel like death warmed up, and very low in mood We give it to our friends and colleagues that we meet And any other person that’s passing in the street This cough lasts sometimes weeks and seems to never go So here I am today, telling my tale of woe Where is this clever Scientist who can help us in our plight To cure this Common Cold and help us in our fight

Mid Suffolk Video Camera Club Lex Laver, a film maker and storyteller, www.alexlaver.co.uk, came to talk to us about setting up equipment to film an interview.

His talk was began by telling us how to build up the required equipment .We found this fascinat- ing .He explained how important it was to have a really good tripod, as this was the base upon which all equipment would be attached .Something we had never considered but we learnt about the advantages aluminium or carbon fibre. The idea was to build up the equipment by using rods attached to the tripod. First the camera was attached, adding additional lenses by using a univer- sal attachment. Then a larger monitor was linked to the camera, to make it easier to see the pic- ture you are taking. An additional microphone was added and a small recorder that would pick up the sound as a backup. All this attached to the tripod by using rods, block rails, extensions and plates. This approach was completely new to us and most informative. Lighting came next and two lights were used, Alex explained about using natural and artificial lightening and then testing the results.

The talk was novel and a new approach for us as a club and we learnt a lot that hopefully we will implement in the future.

We ended the session by watching one of Alex’s films.

Our next meeting is on the 7th November.

We hold our meetings the first Tuesday of the month 1.30 at Hill Side, Stowmarket IP14 2BD. Or contact the membership secretary Ann Evans 01728 861566

Can you help Healthwatch Suffolk to shape and improve home care services

Healthwatch Suffolk is exploring people’s experiences of accessing home care services (domiciliary care). It is an opportunity for you, your friends or family members to influence and improve these ser- vices now and for the future.

The watchdog wants to hear from people that are currently using home care services, have used them in the past or those who may need help at home but have been unable to obtain support in the county.

Domiciliary care is care provided in a person’s home. Sometimes it is called home care or ‘Support to Live at Home’. Home care can include support with things like helping people to get out of bed, wash- ing, dressing, getting to work, cooking meals, eating, seeing friends, caring for families and being part of the community.

Healthwatch Suffolk will use your feedback to help it understand the issues that people face when ac- cessing care at home and what needs to be explored in detail as part of its developing project. As the health and care watchdog for Suffolk, it can use the things that people share to shape, influence and improve care to our county’s most vulnerable residents.

Sharing your experiences couldn’t be easier

If you are currently using a service, Healthwatch Suffolk is asking people to take part in a short survey. You can access it using the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/homecareinsuffolk

If you are not currently accessing support or would prefer not to feedback online, please contact the Healthwatch Suffolk team on 08004488234 (Freephone) or by email to [email protected]. Hard copies of the survey and other formats are available on request.

Let the Children Come I hear a great deal of talk about the lack of children in our churches, and the concern about the long-term effect on the viability of our churches and chapels. It is borne out of the fact that most of our congregations are ‘aging’, so there is fear of what will happen to the church in say 10 – 20 years’ time. One person was asked ‘what will happen to our church when we’re no longer here’ to which they replied ‘it will probably remain an aging congregation’ – implying that people will continue to seek out a deeper meaning to life in their later years (I hope they’re right!).

Yet we can’t escape the knowledge that many of us were brought up at a time when Sunday Schools were thriving, where churches invested a great deal of time, energy and resources into the nurturing of children and young people. Children, for instance, on our council estate were ‘rounded up’ by a lady called Shirley Lawson, who took her own children to the village chapel, and encouraged others to join them – and I was one of them. If it happened now it would probably be referred to as a ‘walking Sunday School bus’!

The times, though, are a-changing (and they were long before Bob Dylan sang about it). In years gone by, church / chapel / Sunday School were one of only a few activities that were available on a Sunday – probably one of the reasons that some boast going THREE times a day and not just for an hour …..! Nowadays we appreciate that there are so many things to attract children and young people whether out and about or stay at home with electronic gadgets, or, with some, the need to visit a parent on a Sunday.

These are very different times. I recall an occasion when children associated with the local church wanted to join a popular amateur dramatic groups, which started half hour before Junior Church finished. We requested that the children be given permission to arrive a little late to give scope for attending church first, but the request was turned down. I was horrified that these children were put a position that they had to choose.

Having acknowledged though that we find it difficult to compete with these many different demands, I wouldn’t want to despair about where we find ourselves, but rather than see it as a challenge. Churches are, for instance, discovering a different way of ‘doing Sunday school’ especially as an after-school club. This is one of the reason why Messy Church’ is so popular providing various activities; readings; singing etc on a Biblical theme and having a meal in the bargain. They’re popular because they’re fun and available at a time when it suits parents as well as children.

I can also refer to the success of ‘Open the Book’ where volunteers take a school assembly, sharing a story from the Bible in word and dramatic form, that goes down exceptionally well with staff and children. They always include an invitation ‘for those who would wish’ to join them in a short prayer at the end. It always amuses me that a volunteer can be spotted in town by a child who might point them out to a parent and identify them with their latest Biblical character!

Recently a Year Six class were reflecting on some of the horrors that are occurring around our world in an activity that sought to confront the effects of both good and bad choices. They were reminded of the ‘rippling effect’ whereby a stone is thrown into a pool of water and the ripple extends far beyond its initial impact. Towards the end of the lesson, the teacher suggested that they spend a few minutes in silence, and take the opportunity to reflect on what they had been discussing. It is suggested that every child in the class bowed their head, closed their eyes, put their hands together, and quietly offered their own prayer.

This gives me encouragement for the future that children have the capacity to understand the need and power of prayer. Jesus said ‘Let the children come to Me and do nothing to prevent it, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these’. I personally think that the teacher was doing just that – allowing the time, space and opportunity for them to approach the eternal throne. I’m sure it’s happening in all sorts of other maybe small ways, but let’s take heart that acorns are being planted and must surely grow in the things that are of the Kingdom. We might sow and nurture, but it is God does the rest and our future – and theirs – are in His hands.

God Bless Chris, (Rev’d Chris Wood – minister of Stowmarket, villages and Debenham URCs) 11

Haughley Playing Field and Pavilion News As part of this year’s fund raising we will be selling draw tickets for a Christmas raffle which will be drawn at the Lights Switch on event 1st December. We will also have subscription sheets for a 50:50 draw for people to sign up to. Diary date for Quiz night is 27/01/2018. Posters will go up nearer the time to remind you.

I met with West Suffolk College in September and we will organise a base and they will cost out the adapted design so we can order materials as soon as possible. It is too early to set an instalment date but we are hopeful that it will be in the first half of this academic year.

The Scouts are still looking for a group secretary so please contact Richard Stacy if you are interested in helping.

Dog poo on the football pitches – please do not let your dog loose to foul the playing field. Two matches had to be interrupted recently to clear up dog mess. The whole of the field is used and poo bins are at each entrance. Dogs are meant to be on leads for this reason.

On a lighter note we were successful in receiving a locality grant of £1,000.00 which will be put towards the cost of repairs needed on the Play Equipment. Some of the clubs were also successful in receiving grants towards either equipment or ground works. It is great that we have this support for our local groups which all have to raise funds and are run by volunteers. Our next meeting is 5th December 2017.

There are three rooms for hire at the Pavilion – The contact details are;  Function room –Dale Sanders – 07731 536773 or [email protected],  Haughley Football club – Ian Wilkinson 01449 773399,  Scouts Hut, table and chairs – Richard Stacy 01449 673311.

Usual reminders – May I respectfully remind dog owners to clear up after their dogs. There are poo bins near each entrance to playing field. Also dogs should be kept on a lead on and around the playing field. Thankyou.

News from your District Councillor

Local Plan: The consultation on the Joint Local Plan for Mid Suffolk and Babergh District Councils is open until Friday 10th November. There have been many consultation events on this and all residents and parishes are encouraged to respond. Copies are in the libraries and it is available online at www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/jointlocalplan

In the meantime Central Government has commenced a consultation on housing numbers (amongst other things) which means, if taken forward, they will dictate housing numbers to local councils and also potentially to neighbourhood plans. The numbers proposed are an increase of more than 20% for Mid Suffolk. This consultation closes on 9th November and the general consensus of local government across the country seems to be not in favour of this centralised approach.

Boundary review: The Boundary Commission for has produced draft recommendations for a Boundary Review of wards in Mid Suffolk – now open for consultation until 11th December 2017. This recommends reducing the amount of councillors in Mid Suffolk from 40 to 34. The boundaries for all existing wards are proposed to be changed – except for the Haughley & Wetherden Ward.

After responses from this second phase consultation are taken into account, the final recommendations will be published on 6th February 2018 and implemented for the 2019 elections.

Merger: Mid Suffolk and Babergh District Councils have again raised the prospect of merging. The two Cabinets “endorsed” this at a meeting on Friday 13th October. There is not expected to be a full local poll, as before in 2011, just a telephone survey to 2,000 residents. My concerns are that this is a distraction given the work that needs to be done around existing planning issues in all our villages and the new Joint Local Plan. There is also no complete business case to consider at this time nor yet a timetable.

Planning: The proposal for 98 homes next to the Playing Field in Haughley is expected to be heard at a develop- ment control (planning) committee at Mid Suffolk on 1st November 2017.

WETHERDEN PARISH COUNCIL Notes from the Parish Council Meeting held in October 2017

County Cllr Andrew Stringer updated us on the situation regarding changes to school transport, on the minerals and waste preferred options consultation, which proposes to extend the current mineral site at Lawn Farm, and could have an impact on Wetherden, and on the A14 resurfacing, which will be done, but the exact date isn't yet known.

District Cllr Rachel Eburne updated us on the various consultations that are currently being carried out, eg the Department for Communities and Local Government plan suggesting a uniform method for determining housing numbers, which clashes with the current MSDC Joint local plan proposals. She also pointed out that MSDC and Babergh are re-opening discussions about merging. There is also a boundary review currently out for consultation, suggesting no changes to the Haughley and Wetherden ward but with dubious figures regarding future population numbers, which the parish council will query. The results of this review will be implemented for the May 2019 elections.

Public Participation – it was reported that there had been vandalism to the tennis courts, with the net wire broken and the winder jammed. The courts are currently closed until repairs are done. Other local problems were reported – the pulling up of the walnut tree behind the pavilion, and a chain of burglaries in local villages.

A representative from Haughley football club reported how much the youngsters are enjoying using Wetherden's pitches to play on. Some repairs are needed to the pavilion, and the question of floodlights was raised, to enable more playing to take place. The parish council will look into these.

Playing field/common – Our litter picker, who does a wonderful job in keeping the village clean, has reported finding bags of dog faeces in the rubbish bin on the playing field, and also a nappy. This is obviously not pleasant for her to deal with. Please do NOT place these in the bins, but take them away with you, either home or, in the case of dog faeces, in the nearest bin provided for this.

Co-option – there is a vacancy on the Parish Council, so if you would like to get involved in making decisions affecting your community, please contact me. We would particularly appreciate having another councillor from Upper Town or Base Green, currently under-represented.

Joint local plan – the consultation period has now commenced on the joint local plan (Babergh/Mid Suffolk District Councils), with a deadline of 10 November. This is open to anyone to comment – it's available online and there are also copies in the local library and other places. The parish council is working its way through the questions but would appreciate your views. For example, if you had to allocate land for 10 dwellings to be built in the village, and say what type, what would you say? Please let me know.

Next meeting MONDAY 20 November 2017 at 7.30pm at the village hall. (this may have to be changed due to too few councillors to be quorate – if so this will be confirmed by notices on the noticeboard and website).

Acknowledgements St Mary’s Church, Wetherden St Nicholas Hospice Midnight Walk. I done the walk in 3hours 20mins. The last 2 miles trekking up the hill by Sainsbury's in bury were very hard work. I would like to thank each & everyone who gave me a donation. My total so far is £1,575.00 for St Nicholas Hospice. I have another £45 to come in so all in all worth every step I walked for my darling mum. I did set a target of £1,000 so to get this & more is wonderful. I walked 30,080 steps that night. The atmosphere was amazing. There were 2,500 girls walking this walk. I ached in places I did not no I had. Once again Thank you. Love Heather. Macmillan We would like to say a big thank you to everyone that supported our Macmillan coffee morning at Buxhall Village hall on 30 September. We are very grateful to those that were able to attend and to those that donated cakes and prizes. We are delighted to inform you that we raised £488.49 for Macmillan. Thank you, Julie Suffolk Historic Churches Bike Ride - We have now received all the sponsorship money for the "Haughley" cyclists. The amount raised this year is a commendable £600 which will be split 50/50 be- tween the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust and St Mary's Haughley. A very big thank you to all who cycled and those who generously sponsored them. David Fleetwood Haughley Harvest Supper- A delicious hot supper was followed by entertainment from the Stowmarket Strummers Ukulele Group, and then the annual auction of harvest produce. The total money raised for Farm Africa from the supper, together with the collection from the Harvest Festival service at St Mary's, amounted to £461. In addition, all the tinned and packaged products donated (five crates full!) have been passed to, and gratefully received by, the Stowmarket foodbank. Thank you to all who gave, to all who supported the evening, to those involved in providing and preparing the supper, to the Stowmarket Strummers (who kindly waived any fee and separately raised funds for EACH on the evening), and a big thank you to John, our auctioneer. David Fleetwood Haughley Quiz Night - An ever popular annual fixture in the village calendar, this year there were 16 teams hotly contesting the title of Haughley Quiz Champions for 2017. It was a closely fought battle won, for the third year in a row, by Rev Chris’s team. Those present enjoyed an excellent evening through which £334 was raised for St Mary's Church. Thank you to all who supported the event and particularly to the Faiers family who, as they have done for many years now, organised it and set the questions. David Fleetwood

HAUGHLEY PARISH COUNCIL – October 2017

Dear Parishioners

PEOPLE POWER It was heartening that in excess of 100 people attended the Neighbourhood Plan public event on 14th October to view the results of the questionnaire and to add their views and comments to the on going process. Over half the village responded to the questionnaire (which in research terms is very good) and over 10% of adults in the parish attended the event. We also have a change of Chairman for the Neighbourhood Plan Working Party, as Chris Adams has taken over from Alf Hannah. Many thanks to Alf for progressing the project so much over the last year. The public was also well represented at the meeting during the public participation section with discussions regarding more benches in green areas in the east part of the village; the need for more footpaths; accessibility to the pavilion and highways issues. Some of these issues are being looked at by the PC, others have been forwarded to more appropriate bodies for consideration. It was also reported their had been a spate of break ins in Haughley and surrounding villages where thieves had been targeting tools, building supplies and equipment. Please be extra vigilant.

THE LONG HAUL The October meeting was one of the longest in living memory as in addition to normal business our main item for discussion was to Mid Suffolk's draft Local Plan. The Local Plan is a prime document which will guide planning in the district for the next decade. Everyone (organisations and individuals) are able to comment on the plan, and, as a parish council we discussed and agreed on our responses to several key issues which we think will affect Haughley Parish. For more information on the Plan and to be able to comment personally on it go to Mid Suffolk District Council website.

TIME TO PUT THE CLOCKS BACK – Also time to plug the Haughley Christmas Lights Switch On on 1st December. Preparations are underway and we hope this years event will be as successful as last year with many village organisations providing entertainment, refreshments, hosting stalls and stewarding . If you haven’t got your group involved yet and would like to please contact Thirza Shaw by email [email protected]

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY Gallowsfield Wood Working Party – Saturday 4th November start 10am Parish Council Meeting – Tuesday 21st November, Ron Crascall Pavilion 7.30pm Haughley Christmas Lights On – Friday 1st December from 5pm Village Green. Allie Warren On behalf of Haughley Parish Council.

WETHERDEN VILLAGE HALL

It’s not too well known that Friday 13th October was World Egg Day, breaking the news far and wide about the benefits of eggs! We had to get cracking straight away, and hatched a plan to set our Whist Drive for that very same day! We were not left with egg on our faces at all, and were really quite shell shocked, as just under nine tables were in play. Everyone seemed to enjoy the evening a great deal, which of course makes us egg-ceedingly happy too! Winners of the monthly lottery this month (winning more than poultry sums!), were as follows:-

st 1 Pat Laflin £35

nd 2 Pat Tuffin £20

3rd John Davis £10

PLEASE NOTE:- Our next Whist Drive will be held at Wetherden Village Hall on FRIDAY 10th November commencing at 7.30pm - admission price only £1, Why not stay ahead of the pack???? Whether you are a regular player, haven't played for years or have always wanted to play Whist, you will be made very welcome in a warm and friendly atmosphere!
