  • Postmodern Visual Dynamics in Amy Heckerling's Clueless
e Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy Hyping the Hyperreal: Postmodern Visual Dynamics in Amy Heckerling’s Clueless Andrew Urie York University Toronto, Ontario, Canada [email protected] ABSTRACT An iconic staple of 1990s Hollywood cinema, director-screenwriter Amy Heckerling’s Clueless (1995) is a cult classic. This article examines the film’s postmodern visual dynamics, which parody hyperreal media culture and its connection to feminine teen consumerism amidst the image-saturated society of mid-’90s era Los Angeles. Keywords: Clueless; Amy Heckerling; Jane Austen; Emma; Popular Culture; Visual Culture; Film Studies; Media Studies; Postmodernism; Hyperreal 38 Volume 4, Issue 1 Hyping the Hyperreal A contemporized reworking of Jane Austen’s 1816 novel, Emma, director-screenwriter Amy Heckerling’s Clueless (1995) stands out as a notable cultural artifact of 1990s Hollywood cinema. While an abundance of scholarly articles exist on how Heckerling adapted the key plot dynamics of Austen’s novel for a postmodern audience,1 this article will largely eschew such narrative analysis in favor of focusing on the film’s unique postmodern visual dynamics, which constitute an insightful parody of hyperreal media culture and its particular connection to feminine teen consumerism amidst the image-saturated society of mid-’90s era Los Angeles. Less an adaptation of Emma than a postmodern appropriation, Clueless pays parodic homage to an oft- overlooked thematic element embedded in its source text. Transposing the decadence of Emma’s upper echelon Regency-era society for the nouveau riche decadence of Beverly Hills and its attendant culture of conspicuous consumption, the film focuses on the travails of its affluent sixteen-year-old heroine, Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone), whose narcissistic preoccupations revolve around consumerism and fashion.

  • When Victims Rule
1 24 JEWISH INFLUENCE IN THE MASS MEDIA, Part II In 1985 Laurence Tisch, Chairman of the Board of New York University, former President of the Greater New York United Jewish Appeal, an active supporter of Israel, and a man of many other roles, started buying stock in the CBStelevision network through his company, the Loews Corporation. The Tisch family, worth an estimated 4 billion dollars, has major interests in hotels, an insurance company, Bulova, movie theatres, and Loliards, the nation's fourth largest tobacco company (Kent, Newport, True cigarettes). Brother Andrew Tisch has served as a Vice-President for the UJA-Federation, and as a member of the United Jewish Appeal national youth leadership cabinet, the American Jewish Committee, and the American Israel Political Action Committee, among other Jewish organizations. By September of 1986 Tisch's company owned 25% of the stock of CBS and he became the company's president. And Tisch -- now the most powerful man at CBS -- had strong feelings about television, Jews, and Israel. The CBS news department began to live in fear of being compromised by their boss -- overtly, or, more likely, by intimidation towards self-censorship -- concerning these issues. "There have been rumors in New York for years," says J. J. Goldberg, "that Tisch took over CBS in 1986 at least partly out of a desire to do something about media bias against Israel." [GOLDBERG, p. 297] The powerful President of a major American television network dare not publicize his own active bias in favor of another country, of course. That would look bad, going against the grain of the democratic traditions, free speech, and a presumed "fair" mass media.

  • Documentary America: Exploring Popular Culture
Review Essay Documentary America: Exploring Popular Culture Sam Girgus DOCUMENTING OURSELVES: Film, Video, and Culture. By Sharon R. Sherman. Lexington: University Press of Kentucky. 1998. HOLLYWOOD'S INDIAN: The Portrayal of the Native American in Film. Edited by Peter C. Rollins and John E. O'Connor. Lexington: University Press of Kentucky. 1998. DISASTER AND MEMORY: Celebrity Culture and the Crisis of Hollywood Cinema. By Wheeler Winston Dixon. New York: Columbia University Press. 1999. Documentary today influences and structures the way we think about and envision current events and history. The proliferation of documentary, of course, stems in part from its importance to television as specials, docudramas, and public broadcasting endeavors such as Ken Burns' The Civil War (1989). Also, docu mentary films such as Michael Moore's Roger andMe (1989) achieve critical and commercial success. Yet, while documentary for information and entertainment grows in popularity and authority, its relation to film as an art and to culture studies remains generally misunderstood and neglected. Thus, documentary requires further study to explain its place in our culture. 0026-3079/99/4003-147$2.00/0 American Studies, 40:3 (Fall 1999): 147-155 147 148 Sam Girgus Besides the cost efficiency of documentary as compared to commercial films, the power and popularity of documentary also derive from the conventional belief in its special relationship to reality. In her important new book, Document ing Ourselves: Film, Video, and Culture, Sharon R. Sherman uses a familiar but descriptive label to identify this idea of documentary realism as a "'slice of life'" (10). For many, documentary provides a visual and audial piece of actual experience, rendering that experience with an immediacy to reality that obviates the mediation of written texts and artistic forms.
