Madonna with Rosary Murillo, 1650. The Secret of the Rosary is a book about the Holy Rose, written by Saint Louis de Montfort, a French priest and Catholic saint who died in 1716. The English translation of the book bears the Imprimatur of Archbishop Thomas E. Molloy of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn. The book revolves around the views of rosary and force rosary and consists of a series of short sections called Roses each of which is about one or two pages. Each Rose discusses a separate point of view about the Rosary and can be addressed to different sections of the audience, for example, priests against lay people. This book examines two different methods of rosary prayer, while three additional methods (i.e. five in total) are listed in God Alone's book, based on the collected writings of St. Louis. The book consists of an introduction, plus two main parts. Part I: What is the Rosary and Part II: How to Read It. The book is structured into 53 roses, i.e. sections. The introduction consists of three roses, Part I embodies the first rose in the fortieth rose and Part II includes the fiftieth rose. The introduction has three roses: The White Rose for Priests, the Red Rose for Sinners, and the Mystical Rose Tree for devout souls. These three roses epitomize the multi-species approach adopted in the book. The advice to priests about using the Rosary to save sinners is directly related to the Council of Sinners on how to use the Rosary for salvation. This theme continues throughout the book, each rose gently leading to another, in the process gradually revealing various secrets on how to approach the Rosary, how to read and how to use it for optimal spiritual benefit. It starts with the forty-first rose called Purity Intentions. This rose indicates that it is not the length of prayer that matters, but the fervor, purity and respect with which he said, for example, one correctly said hail Mary is worth a lot, which is poorly said. This rose is followed by two Roses Attention and The Struggle with Distractions. They give tips for achieving proper thinking for telling the Rosary. The theme then culminates with Rose with awe, which returns to respect. Although each is a separate Rose, they are deftly interconnected to present multiple dimensions for focus and respect. So while the book is highly readable and modest on the surface, it is based on a well structured lot of perspective analysis of the Rosary. Fifty-three sections are closely related and well-thought out. Thus, the term secret quite becomes, because the book shows these relationships in terms of a consistent topic. But the typical reader should not be concerned about the analysis, because the flow of text is natural, pure and pious and appeals to both lay people and priests. The book has been read by Catholics all over the world for more than two centuries and continues to be a great spiritual resource.
