Rarely has one book been the butt of so much abuse; rarely has one book received so many papal commendations! Translated into some forty or more languages, its popularity far from decreasing has increased with the years, particularly with the advent of the Marian age in which we now live. From the first English translation, by the well- known English writer, Father Frederick William Faber, down to our own latest American editions, there has been a constant concern on the part of the editors to adapt De Montfort’s style and terminology to the con- temporary modes of expression, without in any way watering down the doctrine or misrepresenting the author’s thought. Despite these attempts, however, some still find the book difficult to understand. Some of the Saint’s words and expressions, although theologically accurate, are sometimes misunderstood. Hence, the need for a broad- er translation, one that will express the saintly author’s thought in different words and in a style that is popular and easily understood by the average layman. For such a difficult task one could hardly be better qualified than Eddie Doherty, one of America’s finest and most popular Catholic writers, editor, reporter and Slave of Jesus and Mary. Undertaken at our request, Mr. Doherty has made of this a work of love. With the help of Miss Francoise de Castro, Ph.D., who gave him a word-for-word translation from the original French, the writer made the adaptation you now hold in your hands. Although the student of Mariology and those con- cerned with getting De Montfort’s thought, as expressed in the original manuscript, will prefer the standard edi- tion, we feel that Eddie Doherty’s version will open the way to many other souls by whom De Montfort’s treatise www.familyland.org 2 © Montfort Publications, Bay Shore, New York, used with permission. might otherwise have remained unexplored. We hope that its fresh, breezy style will lead many more souls to a better understanding of the De Montfort way of life. THE EDITORS. I. Reign of Christ through Mary Through the Immaculate Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ came into the world. Through her He will reign over the world. Mary lived in obscurity during most of her life. Her humility was so great that she desired to hide, not only from all other creatures, but even from herself, so that only God should know her. She asked Him to conceal her, and to make her poor and humble. God delighted to hide her; in her conception, in her birth, in her myster- ies, in her resurrection and assumption. Her own parents did not know her. And the angels asked “Who is she?" The Most High, though He revealed something of her perfection to the angels, kept infinite- ly more from them. God the Father willed she should work no miracle— at least no striking one—in her life. Yet He had given her the power to work tremendous miracles. God the Son was content she should speak but a few words. Yet He had endowed her with His wisdom. And God the Holy Ghost arranged that His apostles and evangelists should say little about her—no more than enough to make Christ known. Yet she was His beloved spouse. Mary is God’s masterpiece whose full splendor He has reserved for Himself. She is the admirable Mother of the divine Son, Who took delight in humbling and hiding her to favor her sweet humility. He called her “woman," as though she www.familyland.org © Montfort Publications, Bay Shore, New York, used with permission. 3 were a stranger; yet she was dearer to Him than all men and angels. She is the sealed fountain, the faithful spouse of the Holy Ghost. She is the sanctuary, the resting place of the Trinity. God dwells in her more wonderfully, more divinely, than anywhere else in the universe, including the regions occupied by the angelic hosts. And no crea- ture, however pure, is admitted to that sanctuary except through a great privilege. With all the saints I say that our Mother Mary is the paradise on earth where the new Adam took flesh, through the operation of the Holy Ghost, that He might work there wonders beyond all understanding. She is the great, the divine world of God where lie beauties and treasures one cannot imagine. She is the magnificence of God! What grand and secret things God has worked in her. Even she must admit it. “He that is mighty hath done great things to me." The world does not know these wonders. It is unworthy of knowing them. It is incapable of understanding them. The saints have said many beautiful things about Mary, the holy city of God; and never were they more eloquent than when they spoke of her. Yet they realized that the heights of her merits could not be glimpsed; for they reach up to the throne of God. They knew that the width of her charity could not be measured, since it is broader than the earth. They know that there were no limits to her power, because she has power over God Himself. They knew that the depths of her humility— and of all her other virtues and graces—could never be fathomed. O height beyond our understanding! O width beyond all words! Every day, throughout the world, in the highest heavens, and in the lowest pits of hell, all things pro- claim and preach the wonders of the Virgin-Mother. The nine choirs of angels, the people on earth—even the devils themselves—have to call her Blessed. So great is the power of truth. The angels in heaven, according to St. Bonaventure, never stop calling to her, “Holy, holy, holy Mary, Virgin Mother of God!" A million times a day they give her the angelic greeting, “Hail Mary!" They prostrate them- selves before her. They beg her to honor them with her commands. St. Michael, the prince of the heavenly court, is the most eager to pay her homage, St. Augustine says, and to run her errands. The whole earth is filled with her glory. Cities, provinces, dioceses, and great nations are placed, by Christians, under her care and protection. Cathedrals are dedicated to God in her name. There is no church without an altar in her honor. There is no district or country without some miraculous image of her; without some place in which she heals all kinds of ills, in which she distributes all sorts of blessings. There are countless organizations that honor her. There are many religious orders sharing her name and her motherly love. Religious men and women constantly sing her praises and proclaim her mercies. Little children just learning the Hail Mary praise and love her. Even the most hard- ened sinners have some spark of confidence in her. And yet, with the saints, we must truthfully confess that “There is never enough about Mary." We have not given her enough praise, glory, honor, love, or service.

As we come to understand the way the spirit of the world has infected our thinking, however, and as we get in touch with our own woundedness, we come to discover that this is a merciful gift from heaven. It is a sweet path of salvation. In fact, it is better than we could have ever hoped for! What it means is that there is a sweet, loving, perfect mother who actually wants to live in this kind of close relationship with us.

Thomas Steinke The Importance of Making the Consecration to Jesus through Mary I am basing my conference today on the book "True Devotion to Mary" which is universally acclaimed as the single greatest and most theologically authoritative book on the Blessed Virgin Mary ever to have been written. In it De Montfort says that “the formation and education of the great saints who will come at the end of the world are reserved to her, for only this singular and wondrous virgin can produce in union with the Holy Spirit singular and wondrous things.”1 Literally, you could be one of those great saints and will be one of those great saints if you live out this consecration. After today’s talk, you should have a very good idea of how to live out this consecration and thus become a great saint. Papal Support I want to begin by talking about the importance of making the consecration to Mary according to the method of St. Louis Marie de Montfort. Since as Catholics we believe the Holy Spirit guides the Church in its papal documents, I want to establish papal support for this devotion. Pope Leo XIII encouraged everyone to make acts of consecration to the Virgin Mary based on the method of Saint Louis de Montfort. He also beatified de Montfort in 1888, adopted de Montfort's Marian terminology (calling Mary the "Mediatrix" and "Co-Redemptrix"), and wrote no less than ten encyclicals on the Rosary.

For this purpose, thirteen Annunciations of this period which include that piece of furniture are analyzed, and in passing some inadequate interpretations that have been given about any of these pictorial images are evidenced. To justify our interpretations, we rely on an abundant corpus of texts through which many Fathers and theologians of the Latin Church consider the thalamus concept as an eloquent metaphor for the incarnation of the Son of God as a man in the Virgin Mary’s womb, as well as for her virginal divine maternity. The Memorare is a prayer that reminds us that we have a wonderful advocate and protector in the mother of our Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary, pictured at right. In our prayers to her we honor and worship her Son, who is more than happy to listen to His mother’s pleas on our behalf. The Memorare, printed below, invites us to ask the Blessed Mother for her assistance and her grace, especially when we feel most troubled in our daily lives. REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy inter- cession was left unaided. Inspired with this confi- dence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sor- rowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. The actual author of the Memorare is unknown. It has been traditionally attributed to the abbot St. Bernard of Clairvaux from the 12th century. This is possibly because it was championed byanotherBernard, the French priest Claude Bernard, who used it extensively in his ministry to the poor and to prisoners (including some quite hardened criminals!) in the 17th century. Claude Bernard credited reciting the Memorare with curing him of a serious illness. He had some 200,000 copies of the prayer printed up and distributed in leaflets in various languages during his lifetime.

Dominic, according to X-ray [I pictures of his · coffin was five feet five inches in height; Louis was more nearly six feet six. St. Dominic was thin and wiry; de Montfort was large, brawny and strong. He had in­ herited from his father a very strong and robust body. Often when he directed the building of churches, he was known to move timber and stones which were too heavy for the peasants with whom he worked and to whom he preached. On one occasion while preaching in a town square he was inter­ rupted and annoyed by a crowd of drinkers. They were seated at a table near the place where he was preaching and were singing and shouting. They were so loud and boisterous that the audience could not follow the sermon. De Montfort noticed this, and walking over to the men, seized the tables one by one, and turned them over. The crocks and bottles went scattering to the ground; the drinkers, to the nearest cover as fast as their legs would take them. Blessed Louis returned and placidly continued his sermon. Yet despite his great strength and fine physique, the effect of grace on his character was to make him gentle and mild. "I should have been the terror of France were it not for grace" he once said of himself.

    BATES, JAMES M., D.M.A. Music in Honor of the Virgin Mary during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. (2010) Directed by Dr. Welborn Young. 50 pp. Veneration of the Virgin Mary was one of the most important aspects of Christianity during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and sacred music of the time incorporated many Marian concepts. The Virgin Mary was considered the greatest intercessor with God and Christ at a time when fear of Purgatory was strong. Prayers and devotions seeking her aid were among the most significant aspects of spiritual life, and texts of this kind were set to music for devotional use. Beyond her identity as intercessor, there were many additional conceptions of her, and these also found musical expression. The purpose of this study was, first, to explore the basic elements of Marian devotion, and, second, to examine how veneration of Mary was expressed musically. Seven musical compositions from c. 1200-1600 are examined as representative examples. The ―Marian aspects‖ of some compositions may be as straightforward as the use of texts that address Mary, or they may be found in musical and textual symbolism. Of special interest is a particular genre of motet used in private devotions. Precise and detailed information about how sacred music was used in the Middle Ages and Renaissance is scarce, but evidence related to this particular kind of devotional motet helps bring together a number of elements related to Marian meditative practices and the kind of physical settings in which these took place, allowing a greater understanding of the overall performance context of such music.
