33-Day Preparation for Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary Following the itinerary of Saint Louis Marie Grignon de Montfort with selections of writings from the Popes and Saints 1 Introduction Saint Louis de Montfort set forth a revolution of spirituality in teaching us about Marian consecration and giving us a 33-day plan to prepare our souls for that big step. What is this consecration? He described this consecration as being a form of “slavery” to Mary. Slavery means that we do nothing without her. We choose not to have a will apart from hers. He even invites us to wear a chain to signify that close bond with her. He elaborated the various consequences of that bond, saying that we share everything with her including our prayers, our intentions, our actions, and our merits. Fundamentally he is saying that we choose to become totally dependent on her: we receive everything through her and share everything with her. At first this sounds radical and may even sound a little scary or seem like a lot of work. As we come to understand the way the spirit of the world has infected our thinking, however, and as we get in touch with our own woundedness, we come to discover that this is a merciful gift from heaven. It is a sweet path of salvation. In fact, it is better than we could have ever hoped for! What it means is that there is a sweet, loving, perfect mother who actually wants to live in this kind of close relationship with us. -

Meinardus: Mediatrix between Christians and Muslims THE VIRGIN MARY AS MEDIATRIX BETWEEN CHRISTIANS AND MUSLIMS IN THE MIDDLE EAST Otto E A. Meinardus, Ph.D.* In spite of deep-seated christological and soteriological dif ferences between Orthodox Christianity and Islam, there are some areas in which Christian and Muslim prayer converge which could be the basis of dialogue. In the popular piety of the Egyptians, the Virgin Mary, mother ofJesus, can play the role of mediatrix between Muslims and Christians. The subject is di verse and voluminous, so I will limit myself to a few aspects of the theme.Because of my long stay in the Middle East, especially in Egypt, I can describe some of the ways in which a devotion to the Virgin Mary brings together Christians and Muslims. The profound and deep esteem of the Orthodox Christians in the East for the Virgin Mary is well known.Their devotion to her as the Theotokos constitutes an integral part of their litur gical life and popular piety. -

The Perfect Consecration to Jesus Christ through Mary According to the Teachings of St. Louis Marie de Montfort By Fr. Thomas Steinke The Importance of Making the Consecration to Jesus through Mary I am basing my conference today on the book "True Devotion to Mary" which is universally acclaimed as the single greatest and most theologically authoritative book on the Blessed Virgin Mary ever to have been written. In it De Montfort says that “the formation and education of the great saints who will come at the end of the world are reserved to her, for only this singular and wondrous virgin can produce in union with the Holy Spirit singular and wondrous things.”1 Literally, you could be one of those great saints and will be one of those great saints if you live out this consecration. After today’s talk, you should have a very good idea of how to live out this consecration and thus become a great saint. Papal Support I want to begin by talking about the importance of making the consecration to Mary according to the method of St. Louis Marie de Montfort. Since as Catholics we believe the Holy Spirit guides the Church in its papal documents, I want to establish papal support for this devotion. Pope Leo XIII encouraged everyone to make acts of consecration to the Virgin Mary based on the method of Saint Louis de Montfort. He also beatified de Montfort in 1888, adopted de Montfort's Marian terminology (calling Mary the "Mediatrix" and "Co-Redemptrix"), and wrote no less than ten encyclicals on the Rosary. -

For this purpose, thirteen Annunciations of this period which include that piece of furniture are analyzed, and in passing some inadequate interpretations that have been given about any of these pictorial images are evidenced. To justify our interpretations, we rely on an abundant corpus of texts through which many Fathers and theologians of the Latin Church consider the thalamus concept as an eloquent metaphor for the incarnation of the Son of God as a man in the Virgin Mary’s womb, as well as for her virginal divine maternity. The increasingly complex and detailed images of the Annunciation of the 14th and 15th centuries include almost always some narrative details –such as a stem of lilies,1 a book of prayers, a house in the form of a temple,2 the divine ray of light descending, with the dove of the Holy Spirit, towards the Mary‘s ear,3 or the submissive and demure attitude of the Virgin Mary4—, whose respective symbolism has been highlighted, with greater or lesser success, by numerous experts. -

Whichever Feast you choose will determine the date to begin a 33-day period of spiritual preparation, i.e., you follow spiritual exercises for 33 days, and the next day will be the Marian Feast on which you consecrate yourself. August 15, 2021 The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Do you ever feel like you could use some help approaching God in your prayers? The Memorare is a prayer that reminds us that we have a wonderful advocate and protector in the mother of our Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary, pictured at right. In our prayers to her we honor and worship her Son, who is more than happy to listen to His mother’s pleas on our behalf. The Memorare, printed below, invites us to ask the Blessed Mother for her assistance and her grace, especially when we feel most troubled in our daily lives. REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy inter- cession was left unaided. Inspired with this confi- dence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sor- rowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. The actual author of the Memorare is unknown. It has been traditionally attributed to the abbot St. Bernard of Clairvaux from the 12th century. This is possibly because it was championed byanotherBernard, the French priest Claude Bernard, who used it extensively in his ministry to the poor and to prisoners (including some quite hardened criminals!) in the 17th century. Claude Bernard credited reciting the Memorare with curing him of a serious illness. He had some 200,000 copies of the prayer printed up and distributed in leaflets in various languages during his lifetime. -

BLESSED LOUIS MARIE GRIGNION DE MONTFORT MARK HEATH, O.P. II: The Man and the Book of the True Devotion HERE was one thing in which Blessed de Montfort was not like St. Dominic: his size. Dominic, according to X-ray [I pictures of his · coffin was five feet five inches in height; Louis was more nearly six feet six. St. Dominic was thin and wiry; de Montfort was large, brawny and strong. He had in herited from his father a very strong and robust body. Often when he directed the building of churches, he was known to move timber and stones which were too heavy for the peasants with whom he worked and to whom he preached. On one occasion while preaching in a town square he was inter rupted and annoyed by a crowd of drinkers. They were seated at a table near the place where he was preaching and were singing and shouting. They were so loud and boisterous that the audience could not follow the sermon. De Montfort noticed this, and walking over to the men, seized the tables one by one, and turned them over. The crocks and bottles went scattering to the ground; the drinkers, to the nearest cover as fast as their legs would take them. Blessed Louis returned and placidly continued his sermon. Yet despite his great strength and fine physique, the effect of grace on his character was to make him gentle and mild. "I should have been the terror of France were it not for grace" he once said of himself. -

BATES, JAMES M., D.M.A. Music in Honor of the Virgin Mary during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. (2010) Directed by Dr. Welborn Young. 50 pp. Veneration of the Virgin Mary was one of the most important aspects of Christianity during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and sacred music of the time incorporated many Marian concepts. The Virgin Mary was considered the greatest intercessor with God and Christ at a time when fear of Purgatory was strong. Prayers and devotions seeking her aid were among the most significant aspects of spiritual life, and texts of this kind were set to music for devotional use. Beyond her identity as intercessor, there were many additional conceptions of her, and these also found musical expression. The purpose of this study was, first, to explore the basic elements of Marian devotion, and, second, to examine how veneration of Mary was expressed musically. Seven musical compositions from c. 1200-1600 are examined as representative examples. The ―Marian aspects‖ of some compositions may be as straightforward as the use of texts that address Mary, or they may be found in musical and textual symbolism. Of special interest is a particular genre of motet used in private devotions. Precise and detailed information about how sacred music was used in the Middle Ages and Renaissance is scarce, but evidence related to this particular kind of devotional motet helps bring together a number of elements related to Marian meditative practices and the kind of physical settings in which these took place, allowing a greater understanding of the overall performance context of such music.
