THE IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF TOURISM IN SOUTH CROATIA IN THE BEGINNING OF THE 20TH CENTURY Marija BENI PENAVA1 Marija GJURAŠI2 University of Dubrovnik, 29 Branitelja Dubrovnika, 20000 Dubrovnik, CROATIA University of Dubrovnik, 29 Branitelja Dubrovnika, 20000 Dubrovnik, CROATIA * Marija Beni Penava; E-mail: [email protected]; phone: +385 20445934 Abstract — This paper analyses, using archive records and relevant literature, the application of technological advances in transport and tourism in South Croatia in the period that preceded cruisers with thousands of passengers, mass air transport, as well as the usage of computers reservation systems and credit cards that are used in tourism industry nowadays. Technology was intensively involved in the tourism industry in the past. The impacts of technology could be seen on the connectivity by railway as well as sea, land and air traffic. In addition to the mentioned factors of communicative tourism, its receptive factors – hotel industry, catering, marketing, cultural institutions, public services etc became more dependent on technologies in the interwar period. The connection between the advances in technology and the new growing service sector of tourism in the Croatian south was a prerequisite of the coming development of mass tourism. Therefore, the human need for rest, recreation and adventure while abandoning their permanent residence achieved its purpose – enjoyment and relaxation. Peripheral parts of the Croatian south outgrew into world tourist destinations due to the progress of both transport and communication technology in the first half of the 20th century. Keywords— technology, tourism, South Croatia, 20th century 1. INTRODUCTION The Republic of Croatia is oriented towards tourism development, it is a recognized and popular destination with a clear development strategy and vision of its future in tourism.

  • The Habsburg Empire in the Adriatic: from Discovering “Our South” to the Gospel of the European Reconciliation
The Habsburg Empire in the Adriatic: from discovering “our South” to the gospel of the European reconciliation Bojan Baskar* In his latest travelogue titled La leggenda dei monti naviganti, the famed Italian jour- nalist and travel writer Paolo Rumiz1 begins with the following sentence: «Se una sera d’estate in Dalmazia senti un canto di montagna venire da una vela all’ancora, non aver dubbi: è una barca di triestini». To a reader familiar with the geography of the Adriatic, such an observation should not come as a surprise. Neither should the statement that Dalmatia is a system of valleys «riempite d’acqua salata, di pra- terie d’alghe, di banchi di pesce azzurro e di relitti di navi»2. Despite its baroque imagery, it actually dialogues with the Braudelian vision of the Mediterranean as a close proximity and interpenetration of the mountain and the sea. By remind- ing his readership that, in Braudel’s view, the Mediterranean was «the sea of high- landers» or «a space of pastoralists who became captains of a ship», Rumiz was perhaps deliberately provocative toward his Triestine compatriots since many of them might find such images offensive (cfr. 13 Competing imperial legacies Yet Rumiz could as easily claim that the highland singing, reverberating from the sailing boat, reveals the presence of the Austrians. As a landlocked nation, largely Alpine and also notorious for their Alpine-style folk music, the Austrians are nevertheless massively participating in the Adriatic tourism and the related cultural-historical imagination of the once Austrian sea.

  • The Spa and Seaside Resort in the Development of Euro- Mediterranean Travel and Tourism – the Case of Brijuni Islands
THE SPA AND SEASIDE RESORT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF EURO- MEDITERRANEAN TRAVEL AND TOURISM – THE CASE OF BRIJUNI ISLANDS NATAŠA UROŠEVIĆ | 53 | Juraj Dobrila University of Pula, Croatia The paper will offer a new perspective in elaboration of key phases of the tourism development on the Brijuni Islands, by analysing their important function as an élite Mediterranean spa and seaside resort in a transnational framework. The author will show how cultural practices and patterns of tourist behav- iour, characteristic for European early spa and seaside resorts, spread throughout Mediterranean during the 19th and early 20th century. Similar to an established network of European spas, transnational cultural transfers and common features characterized also a Euro-Mediterranean network of climatic seaside resorts. Many of them developed on the place of an- cient spas and aristocratic residences, such as the first modern élite resorts in Italy and France. We can follow a similar process in the Adriatic, where first climatic spas patronized by royalty attracted a fashionable clientele. The author explored and com- pared some of the well-known island aristocratic residences, such as the Isle of Wight, the Hyėres Islands, Capri, Mallorca, Corfu and Brijuni. The conducted research indicated that the beginnings of modern tourism in the Adriatic followed existing patterns of the European leading spa and seaside resorts. The main contribution of this paper would be in linking revitalisa- tion of unique cultural heritage with a local tourist tradition as a model for sustainable development. Key words: Mediterranean, tourism, European spa, seaside re- sort, Adriatic, Brijuni Volume 13 | 2020 | Number 1 Nataša Urošević INTRODUCTION In the history of European travel and tourism, the Mediterranean has a central position, as a contact zone characterized by intense transnational mobility and intercultural encounters: „It is where the continents of Europe, Africa and Asia meet and where North faces South in an asymmetrical relationship.

  • Farinelli Or Concerning the Vocal Derivations of the Old Custom of Castration Oscar Bottasso
Original JMM Farinelli or Concerning the Vocal Derivations of the Old Custom of Castration Oscar Bottasso Instituto de Inmunología. Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, Universidad Nacional de Rosario (Argentina). Correspondence: Oscar Bottasso. Facultad de Ciencias Médicas. Santa Fe 3100. Rosario -2000- (Argentina). e-mail: [email protected] Received 14 October 2009; accepted 2 January 2010 Summary The film presents some of the passages of the life of Carlo Broschi, the famous Farinelli, a castrato who delighted so many lovers of the settecentista opera. Upon witnessing a street challenge between the young singer and a young trumpeter, over which Farinelli is victorious due to his extraordinary voice, George F. Handel, at the time an official musician of the English court and being present almost by chance, proposes a trip to London. Farinelli rejects the offer which leads to a tense relation between the two of them, a relationship full of antipathies but at the same time with a certain degree of mutual recog- nition. In contrast to Farinelli’s scarcely addressed confinement in the Spanish court, at the peak of his career, the film is rich in showing us the varied visits of the Broschi brothers to different European sce- narios, blended with episodes where Farinelli’s seductive character triggers numerous love scenes final- ly consummated by his brother Ricardo, anatomically intact. According to the physiopathology of prepu- bertal castration this seems more over-acted than real. Keywords: Carlo Broschi, Castration, Farinelli, Gérard Corbiau, Haendel.
