In another sense, many years have passed and a new edition is certainly necessary. The preface to the first edition describes the great joy and sadness that I felt when the Introduction made its first appearance. The sadness was the result of the relatively recent death of my mentor, co-worker, and friend, Ray Dillard, who never saw the book in final form. Working on the revision over the past couple of years has reminded me afresh of Ray’s able mind and wonderful com- munication skills. He is still deeply missed as a close friend. I also missed his help in revising the book! Since writing the first edition of the book, I have made a move from West- minster Theological Seminary to Westmont College in Santa Barbara. Even so, I continue to get ample opportunity to teach classes at various seminaries in North America and occasionally abroad. I enjoy teaching at a college for a change of pace, but I am very glad to continue teaching on a graduate level, particularly since this textbook is directed primarily toward a seminary audience. When Ray and I wrote the first edition, his three sons and my three sons were still at home. Now all six are grown and out of the house, pursuing their own dreams. I am very proud of my three sons—Tremper, Tim, and Andrew— as well as my daughter-in-law, Jill, Tremper’s wife, and my first granddaughter, Gabrielle. And I know that Ray would be very proud of his children. This sec- ond edition, like the first, remains dedicated to my wife, Alice, and Ray’s widow, Ann. Tremper Longman III Robert H. • What I Mean by Historical- Grammatical Exegesis- Why I
Grace Theological Journal 11.2 (1990) 137- 155 WHAT I MEAN BY HISTORICAL GRAMMATICAL EXEGESIS WHY I AM NOT A LITERALIST TREMPER LONGMAN III would like to thank the Dispensational Study Group for their I invitation to come and address it on the subject of historical grammatical exegesis. l I especially would like to express my apprecia tion for the work of Elliott Johnson with whom I will be interacting, particularly for his new book Expository Hermeneutici which I read in preparation for today's lecture. To begin, I would like to expose my shortcomings in relationship to the topic I have been asked to address. I probably should have confessed them to Craig Blaising when he invited me to participate in the conference, but Vern Poythress had such a positive and enjoyable experience here last year that I could not resist the temptation.3 My confession is that I have a second-hand understanding of dispensationalism. Virtually all my colleagues at some point in their lives were dispensationalists, most notably Bruce Waltke. I have never been a dispensationalist, not even becoming aware of dispensational ism until seminary. Since I went to Westminster Theological Seminary you can imagine that I did not get an extremely positive assessment of it. Nonetheless, Clair Davis, our church historian, was always fond of saying that Dallas Theological Seminary was the closest seminary to us in many ways. However, before I had heard the term "dispensationalism," I had read Hal Lindsey's The Late, Great Planet Earth4 in high school and had been deeply affected by it.

  • Enns Eyes to See.Indd 1 8/31/10 4:15:06 PM “Ah, Mercy!” That Word That Was Ever on Al’S Lips Also Well Describes the Focus of His Work and His Life
The most important thing in Al’s life was his friendship with Christ. If you ever got into a conversation with him about what really mattered, he would point not to honors or degrees or accomplishments, but to the depth of a person’s friendship with Christ. Al loved the Lord, and he wanted to do only what was pleasing to him. He also loved people, and he did his best to share with them the one thing that really mattered in life: the love of God. In his work as a scholar and teacher, Al had that remarkable ability of integrating his love for learning with his desire for God and his concern for others. He was loving husband, father, pastor, elder, and friend to so many people. He was also a groundbreaking Old Testament scholar, researcher, and teacher, with a deep love for God’s Word and a desire to share that life-giving Word with his colleagues and students. I am sure that Al would be deeply touched by this collection of essays written in his honor. He would be especially moved, I believe, not so much by the high quality of the contributions (as evidenced throughout), but by the deep bonds of friendship that inspired his colleagues and former students to honor him in this way. My friendship with Al goes back to 1971 when we entered Dartmouth College together as freshmen. I remember him then and think of him now as someone who always counted his blessings, and who generously shared his many gifts and talents with others.

  • The Miracles of Jesus Poythress Grand Story of Redemption, Foreshadowing the Great Miracle of Christ’S Death and Resurrection
esus walked on water. He healed a blind man. He turned water into wine. More than just displays of his divine power, Jesus’s Vern S. miracles signify something deeper—they’re windows into God’s J Jesus of Miracles The Poythress grand story of redemption, foreshadowing the great miracle of Christ’s death and resurrection. By explaining the meaning and significance of all 26 miracles recorded in the Gospel of Matthew, New Testament scholar Vern Poythress shows us their relevance for our lives today. Poythress unpacks how understanding the meaning of Christ’s miracles will help us better grasp the salvation God has brought into the world. “Poythress rescues the miracles of Jesus from neglect and confusion by means of his sanctified scholarship. As a pastor, I am indebted to him for helping me make sense of the miracles for myself and in turn for my congregation.” ALISTAIR BEGG, Senior Pastor, Parkside Church, Chagrin Falls, Ohio “Poythress serves as a sure-footed guide through the towering magnificence of Jesus’s miracles, so that we readers can see them as the pulsing signs of redemption that they are. The precision and tender pastoral practicality of The Miracles of Jesus will be sure to refresh every reader.” The R. KENT HUGHES, Visiting Professor of Pastoral Theology, Westminster Theological Seminary “In characteristic fashion, Poythress develops profound principles in the most accessible terms and proceeds to demonstrate their application through numerous Miracles examples from Matthew’s Gospel. I’m enthused to be able to put this book into the Poythress hands of my students.” MICHAEL J.

  • Reading the Word of God in the Presence of God Does Two Very Hard Things Very Well
“While many sincere Christians read the Scriptures as personal communiques from God, biblical scholars often treat them as little more than human documents written for people living long ago. Vern Poythress insists neither of these paths reflects how Christ calls his followers to approach the Bible. Everyone familiar with Poythress’s theological reflections knows that he is one of the brightest minds of our day. Ev- eryone familiar with his life knows the depth of his piety. In this book, Poythress offers a glimpse into how he employs both of these gifts from the Holy Spirit as he handles the Bible. His reflections will challenge and inspire everyone who seeks to read the Scriptures in the presence of God.” Richard L. Pratt, Jr., President, Third Millennium Ministries “Vern Poythress has given the church a truly comprehensive guide to reading and appropriating Scripture. This unique resource explains both the first steps for begin- ners and the theological, philosophical, and linguistic foundations for sophisticated interpretation.” Dan Doriani, Vice President of Strategic Academic Projects and Professor of Theology, Covenant Seminary “Providing both theological foundations and practical strategies for interpretation, Dr. Poythress explains the simple yet astounding truth that God is present in his Word and speaks to us as we read. With pastoral sensitivity, he combines linguistic theory, hermeneutics, systematic theology, and expert biblical knowledge into a compelling work both instructive for advanced students of the Bible and accessible for beginners. I highly commend this book and look forward to sharing it with my congregation.” Camden Bucey, Pastor, Hope Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Grayslake, Illinois; President, Reformed Forum “Reading the Word of God in the Presence of God does two very hard things very well.
