In Mississippi National Forests
SUMMARY Little is known about the distribution of freshwater mussels in Mississippi national forests. Review of the scant available infor- mation revealed that the national forests harbor a diverse mus- sel fauna of possibly 46 or more species (including confirmed, probable, and potential occurrences). Occurrence of 33 species is confirmed. Because of the geographic, physiographic, and drain- age basin diversity of Mississippi national forests, there is con- siderable variation in mussel communities among the national forests. Three distinct fauna1 groups are represented in Missis- sippi national forests, each with a characteristic assemblage of species. One species of potential occurrence is a federally endan- gered species, 1 species of confirmed occurrence is a candidate for listing, and 11 species of confirmed or probable occurrence are considered of special concern by the American Fisheries Society (Williams and others 1993). None of the national forests have been surveyed adequately, and specific population data are almost com- pletely lacking. This review of existing information represents the first of a three-phase program needed to comprehensively evalu- ate the mussel resources of Mississippi national forests. Phase two involves an exhaustive, qualitative field survey of Mississippi national forests to document precise distribution of species and location of important communities. Phase three consists of a quan- titative study of important communities in order to assess repro- ductive characteristics and viability and to establish baseline density estimates for monitoring of future population trends. Neves, Chairman Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences ABSTRACT Pink heelsplitter (Potamilus alatus) mussels collected from Kentucky Lake, TN were held at two bottom locations (0.6 m, 2.5 m) and suspended in pocket nets (at depth about 1.0 - 1.5 m) in a pond at the Freshwater Mollusk Conservation Center (FMCC), Virginia Tech, for 1 yr. Survival of mussels after 1 yr was significantly different, with poorest survival (30 %) in the bottom of the deep end; and no difference between the shallow end (83.3 %) and the suspended pocket nets (63.3 %). Survival of mussels was inversely related to water temperature (r = - 0.72); lowest monthly survival occurred in summer, resulting in a significant difference among the three locations with a similar trend after 1 yr. The glycogen reserves of mussels in captivity for 1 yr differed by pond location, higher in mussels at the shallow end than those in suspended pocket nets and at the deep end. -

Survey goals were: (1) to document current distributions through collection of recent shells; (2) to document former distributions through collection of relict shells and examination of museum collections; (3) to identify changes in distribution; (4) to identify the primary natural and anthropomorphic factors impacting unionids; and (5) to develop a model to explain the documented distributions. The survey confirmed 30 unionid species and the exotic Corbicula fluminea for the state, and museum vouchers documented one additional unionid species. Analysis of museum records and an extensive literature search coupled with research in adjacent states identified 13 additional unionid species with known distributions near the Nebraska border. -

The purpose of this paper is to compile an up-to-date list of the modern unionid fauna of Vietnam and its current conservation status. Unfortunately, there has been relatively little research on this fauna in Vietnam. Fifty-nine species of Unionida have been recorded from Vietnam based on literature, museum records, and our fieldwork. Fifty were assessed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List 2016 in the IUCN categories of Critically Endangered (four species, 6.8%), Endangered (seven species, 12%), Vulnerable (one species, 1.7%), Near Threatened (two species, 3.4%), Least Concern (23 species, 39%), Data Deficient (11 species, 18.6%), and Not Evaluated (11 species, 18.6%). -

In 2009, a project funded by a US Fish and Wildlife Service State Wildlife Grant was undertaken to survey and assess the freshwater mussel populations at wadeable sites from 33 stream basins in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR)/Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) basin surveys. Inclusion of mussels into these basin surveys contributes to the comprehensive basin monitoring programs that include water and sediment chemistry, instream habitat, macroinvertebrate, and fish, which reflect a broad spectrum of abiotic and biotic stream resources. These mussel surveys will provide reliable and repeatable techniques for assessing the freshwater mussel community in sampled streams. These surveys also provide data for future monitoring of freshwater mussel populations on a local, regional, and watershed basis. Agency Contacts Kevin S. -

We recognize a total of 298 species in 55 genera in the families Margaritiferidae (one genus, five species) and Unionidae (54 genera, 293 species). We propose one change in the Margaritiferidae: the placement of the formerly monotypic genus Cumberlandia in the synonymy of Margaritifera. In the Unionidae, we recognize three new genera, elevate four genera from synonymy, and place three previously recognized genera in synonymy. -

However this survey of the lower (channelized) Missouri River documented the presence of 14 unionid species and the exotic Corbicula fluminea (Muller, 1774). Unionids are present in stable substrates sheltered from the effects of the river's strong currents.
