Match background

Home-and-away defeats against Juventus have jolted Real Madrid CF's confidence in their UEFA Champions League campaign but they still lie in second place in Group H and will be hoping to get back on an even keel when they travel to face FC BATE Borisov, who lie at the foot of the section with just two points. • While BATE were denied in their quest for a first UEFA Champions League victory when they lost at home to FC Zenit St. Petersburg on Matchday 4, Madrid's hopes of gaining revenge on Juventus also came unstuck on home soil. Having gone down to the Italian giants two weeks previously, Los Merengues knew they would have their work cut out in the return but it was still a huge disappointment to be on the wrong end of a 2-0 defeat. A superb goal in each half from Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero secured a place in the first knockout round for the side with two matches to spare. • For the Spanish champions it was the first time they had lost successive group games since 1999/00. On that occasion Madrid lost 4-2 at home and 4-1 away against FC Bayern München in the second group stage – although they went on to finish second in Group C and ultimately lifted the trophy. • This time round Madrid can follow Juve into the next stage should they win in and the Italian side avoid defeat away to Zenit. For BATE the situation is clear: they must win or their slim qualifying chances will end. • When the teams met on Matchday 1 at the Santiago Bernabéu, Sergio Ramos and Ruud van Nistelrooy were on the scoresheet as Madrid ran out 2-0 winners. On their debut in the competition, Viktor Goncharenko's team did not offer a huge threat and were hampered by the 62nd-minute dismissal of Anri Khagush for a second yellow card, although they already trailed 2-0 by that point. • After that BATE forged 2-0 ahead against Juventus with goals from Sergei Kryvets and Igor Stasevich in the opening 23 minutes on Matchday 2, but eventually had to settle for a 2-2 draw. • At least holding the 1996 UEFA Champions League winners to a draw gave the team, who last month became only the second Belarussian club to win five Vysshaya Liga titles, encouragement for the double-header with Zenit. In the first game in St Petersburg, BATE were ten minutes away from securing that elusive first victory after substitute Pavel Nekhaychik had applied a cool finish but Fatih Tekke evaded the BATE offside trap to fire past Sergei Veremko and earn Zenit a point.

• BATE hoped the maiden UEFA Champions League success would come in the home game with Zenit two weeks later but instead it was the visitors who reached that landmark. Pavel Pogrebnyak ended his goal drought to put the visitors on their way and although they lost Sébastien Puygrenier to a red card midway through the second half, Danny sealed the 2-0 win four minutes into stoppage time. • Before the game on 17 September, the Madrid club had never previously faced opposition from Belarus in a competitive fixture, while BATE had met a Spanish team just once previously. That came in last season's UEFA Cup first round when they took on Villarreal CF, losing 2-0 at home having already gone down 4-1 in the away leg. • On Matchday 2 Madrid won 2-1 at Zenit after an own goal by Tomáš Hubočan put them in front. After Danny had levelled, the nine-time European champions got their noses in front again as Van Nistelrooy took advantage of more defensive uncertainty to secure the points. • They followed that with the away game against Juventus when Del Piero was on the scoresheet again. Amauri made it 2-0 and while Van Nistelrooy's 66th-minute header cut the arrears that was as good as it got for Bernd Schuster's team.

Match facts

BATE UEFA milestones • Sergei Kryvets's goal against Juventus on Matchday 2 was BATE's first in the UEFA Champions League proper. UEFA Champions League statistics • Five BATE players have appeared in all ten games, including qualifying: Vladimir Rzhevski, Aleksandr Yurevich, Dmitri Likhtarovich, Kryvets and Pavel Nekhaychik. • Gennadi Bliznyuk's goal in the second qualifying round second leg against RSC Anderlecht was his tenth in UEFA club competition, equalling the record of Georgi Kondratyev for the most European goals scored by a Belarussian. It was Bliznyuk's seventh goal in UEFA Champions League qualifying as well – also a national record. • Likhtarovich has now played 44 matches in UEFA competition for Belarussian clubs, another record. BATE assistant coaches Vadim Skripchenko (30 games) and Aleksandr Fedorovich (28) are third and fourth on the list respectively. FC Barcelona's Aleksandr Hleb is the Belarussian with most appearances in UEFA club competition having featured 65 times. • BATE have been caught offside only five times, fewer than any other team. Disciplinary information • BATE have no players suspended or within a booking of a ban. Latest domestic information • Thursday 20 November: FC Minsk 1-4 FC BATE Borisov (agg: 4-4, BATE won 4-3 on penalties) (Khachaturyan 87; Rodionov 45, Kryvets 72, 75, Bliznyuk 90) BATE overturned a 3-0 first-leg deficit in thrilling fashion to progress to the Belarussian Cup quarter-finals. set the visitors on their way in Minsk and they had levelled the aggregate scoreline with 15 minutes left thanks to two Kryvets goals. Anri Khagush's 85th-minute dismissal for two bookable offences turned the tide, however, and Andrei Khachaturyan quickly made matters worse for BATE. Yet a last-gasp Bliznyuk free-kick forced extra time and then penalties, where Aleksandr Gutor came to the fore, saving two of Minsk's spot-kicks to secure victory. • "I'm obviously happy with the outcome," said BATE coach Viktor Goncharenko. "We can use this positive result as a platform for our match against Real Madrid." • Following their 2-0 home defeat by FC Zenit St. Petersburg on Matchday 4, BATE suffered more disappointment on their return to domestic action as their 27-match unbeaten league run ended with a 2-1 reverse at FC Dinamo Minsk on 9 November. Once Sergei Gigevich (6) and Aleksandr Lebedev (43) put the hosts in charge, there was no way back for newly crowned Vysshaya Liga champions BATE, with Rodionov's 90th-minute header merely a consolation. • BATE's club-record sequence of 27 league games without defeat consisted of 18 wins and stretched back to the final day of the 2007 campaign when Minsk triumphed 2-1 in Borisov.

• There was some good news for BATE, as captain Aleksandr Ermakovich came on after the interval for his first competitive appearance since September when he aggravated a knee injury. • "I probably should have made more changes to the starting XI," said Goncharenko. "The players looked tired and it was hard to watch at times. However, we do not have adequate replacements for all positions. Of course, it is a pity to lose our unbeaten run. Dinamo are our main rivals in Belarus but we still lacked motivation." • BATE picked themselves up three days later as Mikhail Sivakov's 36th-minute penalty earned an experimental side three Vysshaya Liga points at FC Savit Mogilev. With Nekhaychik the sole survivor from the starting XI that lost to Zenit, Valentin Radevich hit the post after only 28 seconds before Sivakov struck following a foul on Vitali Kazantsev. • The Vysshaya Liga drew to a close on 16 November with BATE signing off with a 1-1 draw at home to FC Vitebsk. Rodionov's header (67) was cancelled out by Ruslan Usov deep into added time. • "We have had a fine season," said Goncharenko. "I have nothing to complain about. We won all the key fixtures when we had to win. I am worried about the number of late goals we are conceding though – in added time today, and before that in the game against Zenit." • Rodionov and Bliznyuk topped the Vysshaya Liga scoring chart with 16 goals apiece. Bliznyuk fell two short of his 2007 haul while Rodionov surpassed his by a solitary strike. • Maksim Zhavnerchik has not appeared for the Belarussian titleholders since their first-night defeat by Real Madrid CF and was removed from the squad prior to the draw with Juventus on 30 September. "I consider him one of BATE's most promising players," said Goncharenko. "Unfortunately, he doesn't have the desire to develop his game. If someone does not work properly, and does that over a long period of time, I have to make radical decisions." Injury news • Vladimir Rzhevski – out since 5 November (ankle) • Aleksandr Ermakovich – out 9 August to 9 November (knee) • Rzhevski will not play again until 2009 after breaking his ankle against Zenit. International news • Belarus coach Bernd Stange decided to omit all BATE players from his squad ahead of the 2-1 friendly defeat in Cyprus on 19 November to give the champions more time to prepare for their fixtures against Madrid and Juventus. Miscellaneous • BATE have turned down the chance to take part in the Commonwealth Cup, an indoor friendly tournament staged in Moscow every January between the leading clubs of the former Soviet republics. Dinamo Minsk also declined so third-placed FC MTZ-RIPO Minsk will represent Belarus. • Igor Stasevich and Khagush recently participated in a charity project called Hurry To Make Good, visiting a mother of nine adopted children to present her with a television, a newspaper subscription and BATE souvenirs all paid for out of their own pockets. • Although Goncharenko's date of birth is widely quoted as 10 September 1977, he was born on 10 June 1977. The confusion arose after he lost his passport and, in the replacement, the official mistakenly entered 09 (September) as the month of his birth instead of 06 (June). • BATE play their home group games at the in Minsk, 65km away from Borisov, as their usual home ground has a capacity of only 5,000. Real Madrid UEFA milestones • Mahamadou Diarra's next appearance in the UEFA Champions League will be his 50th. UEFA Champions League statistics • Madrid have had 39 shots wide so far, the joint highest total in the competition along with Manchester United FC. Disciplinary information • The injured Ruud van Nistelrooy will incur a suspension with his next yellow card.

Latest domestic information • Saturday 22 November: Real Madrid CF 1-0 RC (Sneijder 39) A deflected shot by Wesley Sneijder six minutes before half-time was enough for Madrid to defeat lowly Recreativo at the Santiago Bernabéu. Both sides had chances to take the lead early on with Javier Camuñas, for Recreativo, and Sneijder both going close with headers. Sneijder thought he had put his team in front just before the quarter-hour, but his effort was disallowed as the ball had gone out of play before Gonzalo Higuaín passed to the Dutch midfielder. With the interval approaching, Sneijder was rewarded when his strike from distance deflected off defender Beto and looped over goalkeeper Asier Riesgo. Raúl González missed one of the few opportunities that the hosts, who lost Higuaín to an ankle injury 12 minutes from time, fashioned in the second half. • "The result was important," said coach Bernd Schuster. "I thought the winning margin could have been greater given the chances we had. It was vital we won for lots of reasons, including that it was against a team we should be beating at home. Higuaín went off with an ankle injury and I hope he's back soon because things can't continue like this for us – we're getting new injuries every day." • Iker Casillas kept his first clean sheet for Madrid since the Real Racing Club game on 21 September, a run of eleven matches during which his net was breached 17 times. Jerzy Dudek kept goal for the Copa del Rey games against Real Unión Club on 30 October (2-3) and 11 November (4-3). • Higuaín scored four goals to earn ten-man Madrid a 4-3 Liga win against Málaga CF on 8 November. The home side were behind three times at the Santiago Bernabéu as Eliseu (6) and Nabil Baha (18) traded goals with Higuaín (8, 37 pen) before Antonio Apoño fired the visitors ahead from the penalty spot with 20 minutes left. By then Madrid were a man down following Sergio Ramos's 44th-minute dismissal, yet Higuaín secured the points (71, 80 pen). • "I'd prefer to win another way but we have again shown what we're capable of," said Schuster. "We are playing games every three days almost, and although we must take things step by step, we are continuing to gain mental strength." • At 20, Higuaín became the third-youngest player to score four goals in one game for Madrid. Jaime Lazcano (1929) and Pablo Olmedo (1948) both achieved the feat aged 19. • Madrid suffered a shock Copa del Rey fourth-round exit on 11 November, succumbing to an away-goals defeat by third-tier Real Unión. Trailing 3-2 after the first leg, Schuster's side fell further behind when Pablo Absalo opened the scoring and though Raúl replied shortly before half-time, Asier Salcedo put the minnows back in front. Second-half efforts from Raúl and Alberto Bueno then levelled the tie, and when Madrid's captain completed his hat-trick with five minutes left the hosts appeared to have done enough. Eneko Romo's last-minute strike provided another twist, however. • Raúl brought up his triple century of goals for Madrid with his third against Real Unión Club and is now just seven behind Alfredo Di Stéfano, the Merengues' all-time leading marksman. • Madrid lost ground on the Liga leaders on 15 November when they went down 1-0 at Real Valladolid CF, Néstor Canobbio (49) scoring the only goal. Higuaín, Sneijder and Raúl all passed up presentable chances and even after Gabriel Heinze was sent off, Fabio Cannavaro forced a late goalline clearance. • The Valladolid loss was Madrid's fifth in their first 17 matches in all competitions this term. • Casillas is the only member of the Madrid squad to have featured in each of the team's 12 Liga games this season, playing every minute. Higuaín, Raúl and Rafael van der Vaart have made eleven appearances apiece. • Madrid have conceded 17 times in 12 Liga outings, eight more than at the same stage last term. The last time they had conceded more at this point of a Liga campaign was in the 1999/2000 season when the side shipped 19 goals, and coach John Toshack was promptly replaced by Vicente Del Bosque. • Madrid have won eight of their eleven Liga matches since the opening-day defeat at RC Deportivo La Coruña, drawing two and losing one. • With nine goals in eleven appearances, Higuaín is enjoying his best start to a Liga season since signing from CA River Plate in January 2007.

Injury news • Christoph Metzelder – out since 11 November (left ankle) • Mahamadou Diarra – out since 8 November (left thigh) • Ruud van Nistelrooy – out since 6 November (right knee) • Arjen Robben – out since 5 November (right calf) • Pepe – out 26 October to 1 November (left knee), and 2 to 19 November (left thigh) • Rubén de la Red – out since 30 October (head) • Míchel Salgado – out 30 October to 6 November (knee) • Miguel Torres – out 14 October to 11 November (left thigh) • Fabio Cannavaro – out since 21 November (thigh strain) • Gonzalo Higuaín – out since 22 November (ankle) • Higuaín was replaced by Javier Saviola 12 minutes from time against Recreativo because of a sprained left ankle. • Likewise, Sneijder made way for compatriot Van der Vaart after 66 minutes due to a possible calf injury. • On 10 November, Van Nistelrooy travelled to the United States for a consultation about his knee. It was agreed he would undergo surgery to repair damaged cartilage and treat a cyst on his cruciate ligament, which will keep him out for the rest of the season. • De la Red continues to rest after fainting during the match away to Real Unión Club when the 23-year-old blacked out due to a drop in blood pressure caused by overexertion. International news • Casillas and Ramos both started Spain's 3-0 friendly win against Chile at El Madrigal on 19 November, while Heinze and Fernando Gago featured as Argentina beat Scotland 1-0. • Sneijder and Van der Vaart were also victorious as the Netherlands defeated Sweden 3-1 although a Netherlands B team containing Royston Drenthe had less success as they lost 3-0 to Sweden Under-21s. • There were contrasting fortunes for Pepe and Marcelo as Brazil swept Portugal aside 6-2 in Brasilia, while in Cannavaro helped Italy recover from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Greece. • The previous day, Bueno had come on as a 68th-minute substitute in the Spain U21s' 4-1 friendly loss in Portugal. Miscellaneous • Cannavaro and Van Nistelrooy have each contributed a recipe to the Eat for Goals! children's cookbook – in which 13 top footballers give recipes for their favourite healthy meals – which was launched by UEFA, the European Commission and the World Heart Federation. Cannavaro chose Pasta a la Siciliana and Van Nistelrooy selected salmon grilled with cloves and served with vegetables. • Casillas and Ramos have been included in the 2007/08 FIFPro World Team of the Year. • Van der Vaart, Van Nistelrooy, Ramos, Casillas and Pepe are among 30 contenders vying for the Ballon d'Or trophy, the winner of which will be announced on 2 December. Casillas was also named among 23 candidates for the FIFA World Player award to be decided on 12 January in Zurich.

Head coach FC BATE Borisov: Viktor Goncharenko Date of birth: 10 June 1977 Nationality: Belarussian Playing career: FC RUOR Minsk, FC BATE Borisov Coaching career: FC BATE Borisov Viktor Goncharenko's playing career as a defender with FC BATE Borisov was cut short aged 25 because of ruptured left knee ligaments. He immediately switched his attention to coaching, taking over the club's reserves and guiding them to second-placed finishes in 2005 and 2006 before graduating to become the assistant to first-team coach Igor Kriushenko. In 2007 he replaced Kriushenko on a temporary basis when the latter developed health problems and guided BATE to five wins in his six matches in charge. When Kriushenko departed for FC Dinamo Minsk in November of that year, Goncharenko got his big break with the newly-crowned champions. He had his work cut out, however, with the side in transition after a number of key departures and the retirement of long-term goalkeeper Aleksandr Fedorovich. His purchases of the likes of Vladimir Rzhevski from Finland's third tier as well as Sergei Sosnovski and Sergei Veremko proved the shrewdest of moves. Indeed, as the 2008 Vysshaya Liga campaign began he guided the club to a ten-match winning streak and that summer helped BATE become the first Belarussian representatives in the UEFA Champions League group stage. "I've said it before and I'll say it again: I have an outstanding team with great potential," he said after his side sealed their passage having beaten Valur Reykjavík, RSC Anderlecht and PFC Levski Sofia in qualifying. "Our dream has come true." Goncharenko's signings played key parts. Rzhevski and Sosnovski both scored against Levski while it was the heroics of Veremko that kept them in the first leg in Sofia, the keeper capping a stunning performance by saving a penalty as BATE won 1-0. Such was the coach's confidence that at half-time during the 1-1 draw in the return and with BATE down to ten men he left the dressing room after just a few minutes, explaining: "My team were completely in control and there was no sense me bending their ears with unnecessary instructions."

Real Madrid CF: Bernd Schuster Date of birth: 22 December 1959 Nationality: German Playing career: SV Hammerschmiede Augsburg, 1. FC Augsburg, 1. FC Köln, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid CF, Club Atlético de Madrid, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Club Universidad Nacional AC Coaching career: SC Fortuna Köln, 1. FC Köln, Xerez CD, FC Shakhtar Donetsk, Levante UD, Getafe CF, Real Madrid CF Having cut a swathe through Spain as a dashing midfield player in the 1980s, Bernd Schuster has once more been shaking up the Liga as a coach. After a tremendous first season in domestic terms at Madrid, he is battling for club honours in Europe again, having only had the 1981/82 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, won with FC Barcelona, to show for his glory years as a player. Brilliant and controversial, Schuster was just 20 when he helped West Germany win the 1980 UEFA European Championship and shortly afterwards left Köln for the Camp Nou where he was to spend eight, occasionally fraught seasons. Winning the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1982 and the league title in 1985, Schuster was a losing finalist in the 1985/86 European Champion Clubs' Cup. By that stage, he had retired from international football following disagreements with coach Jupp Derwall and several team-mates, but 'The Blond Angel' continued to soar in Spain, though he caused upset at Barça by joining their arch-rivals Madrid in 1988 and going on to win two titles on the trot before representing Club Atlético de Madrid, Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Mexican side Club Universidad Nacional AC. Hanging up his boots in 1997, he coached lower-tier clubs in Germany and Spain, and spent a season in Ukraine with FC Shakhtar Donetsk before arriving at Getafe CF in 2005. After two superb seasons, he returned to Madrid as coach in summer 2007, romping to the title with an excellent 85-point haul and playing some fine attacking football.

UEFA information

UEFA President visits UEFA President Michel Platini visited four European countries – Albania, Bulgaria, Czech Republic and Romania – to discuss football affairs with government and national association officials. During his visit, the UEFA President emphasised that UEFA would consolidate its support for Europe's smaller associations. "UEFA is a large fraternal house where there are no privileges or preferential treatment, where small associations with limited financial resources are treated the same as the wealthy major associations," he told of Albania's general assembly. "The resources generated by our major competitions are shared in an equitable manner between everyone." Medical Forum in Nyon The crucial role taken by club doctors prompted UEFA to organise the inaugural UEFA Elite Club Medical Forum in Nyon last week. The forum was an ideal opportunity to emphasise that club doctors are now part of a 'team behind a team', working in tandem with physiotherapists, masseurs and advisors on a variety of specialist issues, and to stress that their views should never be underestimated. "I admire you," the medics were told by Dr Michel D'Hooghe, chairman of the UEFA Medical Committee. "When I started my career as a team doctor, I received only one question every week from my coach: 'Can he play next Saturday?' Times have changed, at FIFA and UEFA level, and in the clubs. We gradually saw that football asks more than whether a player can play the next game. We started talking about things such as dermatology, physiology, psychology, pharmacology, hygiene, diets – and then came the internationalisation of sports and we started talking about jetlag and football at altitude. The club doctor now has a team of specialists to help him. Football medicine has also become a team sport, and club doctors have to supervise all these aspects of sports medicine." EURO's sustainability strategy UEFA EURO 2008™ was the first major football tournament to feature an integrated sustainability strategy, and following the publication of a report on the successes in Austria and Switzerland, it is hoped the tournament has set standards for other major sporting events in the future. The strategy was based on the three target dimensions of sustainable development – the environment, economy and society/culture – and featured a total of almost 60 measures divided into 12 topics. The most notable successes came in the areas of transport (65 per cent public transport usage for long distances and 80 per cent at urban level) and energy (with the majority of energy provided as certified "naturemade star" electricity from renewable sources). There were also plenty of successful projects in the society and culture area, such as the provision of live audio commentary to help blind or partially-sighted fans enjoy the matches in the stadiums. French clubs visit UEFA has been explaining its activities and other European football issues to representatives of the union of French professional football clubs, UCPF, in the latest of a series of planned visits by clubs throughout Europe. In the meeting at UEFA's House of European Football in Nyon, the presidents of French first and second division clubs and UCPF delegates heard various presentations by UEFA's directors and departmental heads covering the broad palette of the work undertaken by European football's governing body. Presentations focused among other things on the local training of players, financial running of clubs, European club competitions and their formats and marketing, the governance of UEFA and European football, and UEFA's relations with Europe's clubs, leagues and players' bodies. The French delegates also held discussions with UEFA President Michel Platini. Gerrard admiration Steven Gerrard has been at Liverpool FC for 20 years, and in the first team for ten of those. In the latest edition of the official UEFA Champions League magazine Champions the Reds' inspirational skipper talks about the joy and pain of winning and losing finals, how the Anfield club belong in Europe and the ease of playing behind Fernando Torres. Gerrard says that if he could be like any other player, it would be FC Barcelona's brilliant Argentinian . "If I had his balance, skill and his ability to go past five opponents, I wouldn't be a bad player..." Eat For Goals! UEFA, the European Commission and the World Heart Federation joined forces in Brussels to help launch the Eat for Goals! children's cookbook, in which 13 top footballers give recipes for their favourite healthy dishes. A star-studded list has contributed to the book – in order of chapters, Abbas Suan, Barry Ferguson, Birgit Prinz, Carles Puyol, Cathrine Paaske Sørensen, Fabio Cannavaro, Heurelho Gomes, Kelly Smith, Lukas Podolski, Miroslav Klose, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Steven Gerrard and Thierry Henry. Eat for Goals! is published in English, French and German by publisher Falkemedia and is available to be ordered online at www.falkemedia-shop.de.

Competition facts

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones Holders Manchester United FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/00 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League in 2007/08 when he featured against Olympiacos CFP on Matchday 1 at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The record was previously held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in the 2006/07 season at the age of 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on Matchday 6. Laurent Blanc is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days, having found the net for Manchester United FC in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos CFP on 23 October 2002. Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute. In 2006/07, PFC Levski Sofia joined 1. FC Košice in being the only team to have played in the UEFA Champions League and never picked up a point. The Slovakian side have not returned to the competition since losing all six games in their only campaign to date in 1997/98. Six other teams have gone through a single group stage campaign without picking up a point: FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08), SK Rapid Wien (2005/06) and RSC Anderlecht (2004/05) plus FC Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2002/03, first and second group stage respectively) and Fenerbahçe SK (2001/02, first group stage). Dynamo also conceded 19 goals in their six outings in 2007/08, equalling the record let in during a group stage set by Ferencvárosi TC in the 1995/96 campaign. Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on Matchday 6 of the 2006/07 campaign, FC Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a win in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on Matchday 3 of the same campaign. The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool FC in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and Werder Bremen in 2005/06. Last updated: 11.11.2008

Team facts

FC BATE Borisov UEFA club competition milestones • BATE have steadily progressed since making their European debut in August 1999, going down 12-1 on aggregate to FC Lokomotiv Moskva in the UEFA Cup qualifying round. They made their debut in the UEFA Cup first round two years later, against AC Milan, and reached the UEFA Intertoto Cup third round the following season. UEFA Champions League milestones • The Belarussian side made their first appearance in UEFA Champions League qualifying in 1999/2000, winning through to the second qualifying round, and also featured in 2003 and 2007. Reaching the third qualifying round in the latter season was their most notable achievement until the start of the 2008/09 campaign, when Valur Reykjavík, RSC Anderlecht and PFC Levski Sofia were overcome as BATE became the first ever club from Belarus to reach the group stage. UEFA club competition honours • N/A Ten-year record 2007/08: UEFA Cup – first round (having transferred from UEFA Champions League third qualifying round) 2006/07: UEFA Cup – second qualifying round 2005/06: UEFA Cup – second qualifying round 2004/05: UEFA Cup – first qualifying round 2003/04: UEFA Champions League – first qualifying round 2002/03: UEFA Intertoto Cup – third round 2001/02: UEFA Cup – first round 2000/01: UEFA Champions League – second qualifying round 1999/00: UEFA Cup – qualifying round 1998/99: Did not compete in UEFA club competition 2007/08 season Domestic record: BATE claimed a second successive Belarussian league title – and a fourth overall – with three games to spare of the 2007 season, eventually finishing 12 points clear of second-placed FC Gomel and FC Shakhtyor Soligorsk. Their hopes of a domestic double had already been dashed, however, as FC Dinamo Brest emerged as 4-3 penalty shoot-out victors after a goalless draw in the Belarus Cup final in May 2007. European record: Having overcome a 2-0 first-leg deficit to defeat APOEL FC 3-2 in the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round, BATE enjoyed a more comfortable success in the next stage against FH Hafnarfjördur, a 3-1 win in the first game in Iceland paving the way for a 4-2 overall success. A 2-2 home draw against FC Steaua Bucureşti in the third qualifying round raised hopes of progress into the group stage which were ended by a 2-0 reverse in Romania, and the subsequent UEFA Cup campaign proved short-lived, Villarreal CF running out 6-1 aggregate winners in the first round.
