This article argues that as a result of globalization and consumerism in the post-reform market economy, the genre of music-based TV talent shows has become one of the most popular TV genres in China and has at the same time become a vehicle of a neoliberal meritocratic ideology. The rise of the ideology of meritocracy accompanied the pace of market reform in post-1980s China and is influenced by the loss of social safety nets during China’s transition from a socialist to a market economy.

Jane Zhang* June 2019 Abstract We test whether participation in one protest within a political movement increases subsequent protest attendance, and why. To identify an effect of protest participation, we randomly, in- directly incentivize Hong Kong university students into participation in an antiauthoritarian protest. To identify the effects of social interactions, we randomize the intensity of this treat- ment across major-cohort cells. We find that experimentally-induced protest participation is significantly associated with protest attendance one year later, though political beliefs and preferences are unaffected. Persistent political engagement is greatest among individuals in the cells with highest treatment intensity, suggesting that social interactions sustained persis- tent political engagement.     Maha Sura Singhanat Somdet Phra Bawornrajchao Maha Sura Singhanat (Thai: สมเด็จพระบวรราช Maha Sura Singhanat เจามหาสุรสิงหนาท; RTGS: Somdet Phra Boworaratchao Mahasurasinghanat) (1744–1803) was the younger brother of Phutthayotfa Chulalok, the first monarch of มหาสุรสิงหนาท the Chakri dynasty of Siam. As an Ayutthayan general, he fought alongside his brother in various campaigns against Burmese invaders and the local warlords. When his brother crowned himself as the king of Siam at Bangkok in 1781, he was appointed the Front Palace or Maha Uparaj, the title of the heir.
